Opis:: Language is considered a social phenomenon because all human beings communicate with their respective speech communities using the language of their own. Putnam’s theory of meaning combines such ingredients as the individual language experience world and social practice, all of which are ignored or downplayed by traditional theorizing about meaning. This article outlines some important aspects of Putnam’s idea and tries to answer the question of whether the stereotype semantics can solve the problem of meaning.

Opis:: The concept of the enemy stereotype, which is permanently present in colloquial, journalistic, and academic discussions, has not been scientifically analysed so far. In this article, an attempt to provide a definition of “the enemy stereotype” as an independent linguistic being has been made. The stages of this term taking shape in the political reality have also been presented. The article has strictly theoretical nature, and is based on scientific achievements in the fields of research related to stereotypes and hostility. In the author’s opinion, the analysis of the phenomenon of stereotyping carried out from a sociological, psychological, and linguistic point of view is necessary. A reflection on the issue of hostility in general, and on the image of the enemy in political activities in particular is also fundamental.
Pojęcie stereotypu wroga, które na stałe zagościło w dyskursie publicznym zarówno w języku potocznym, publicystycznym, jak i naukowym, nie zostało dotychczas poddane gruntownej naukowej analizie. W niniejszym artykule podjęto próbę sformułowania definicji „stereotypu wroga” jako samodzielnego bytu językowego oraz przedstawiono etapy jego kształtowania się w rzeczywistości politycznej. Artykuł ma charakter ściśle teoretyczny bazujący na dokonaniach naukowych prowadzonych w ramach obszarów badawczych związanych ze stereotypem oraz wrogością. W opinii autorki konieczna dla realizacji postawionego celu jest analiza zjawiska stereotypizacji dokonana z następujących perspektyw naukowych: socjologicznej, psychologicznej, językoznawczej. Niezbędna wydaje się również refleksja nad problematyką wrogości w ogóle, a w szczególności uwzględniająca figurę wroga w działaniach politycznych.

Opis:: Stereotype threat (ST) is a situation in which an individual is apprehensive that he or she may confirm a negative stereotype about the social group to which they belong or that they will be judged through the lens of negative stereotypes (Steele & Aronson, 1995). A large body of research showed that ST affects African Americans in intelligence or verbal tasks, people from families with low economic and social status in intelligence tests and women in math and logic tasks. A common immediate effect of ST is the deterioration of performance in the stereotyped field. However, the long-term effect may be the individual’s withdrawal from such a domain even though he or she is predisposed to achieve success in it. ST appears in children at an early school age and may affect them throughout their lives. Therefore, it is important to combat this phenomenon. There are effective ways to reduce this psychological state and many of them require cooperation from teachers and educators.

Opis:: The aim of this work is to reconstruct the linguisitic and cultural view of a Pole from our neighbours’ perspective, including Russians, Lithuanians, Belorussians, Ukrainians, Slovaks, Czechs, and Germans. The primary research method used in this work was the linquistic world’s view method by Jerzy Bartmiński, and the concept of a stereotype as a stabilised view of someone or somethingAn important goal of my study was to compare my survey results with the results of previous research done on the image of a Pole, with the use of various methods, such as sociological, ethnolinguistic and ethnocultural. The comperative approach to the data collected by other researchers allowed to indicate the similarities and differences which emerged in the perception of a Pole for the neighbours’ perspective in over 20 years, as well as to consider the impact of current affairs on enchancing the national stereotype capacity.

Opis:: Issues related to stereotypes have their reference in literature from various areas. It is worth bringing their significance closer to being aware of the nature of the issues discussed. Opis:: The study aimed to verify whether the chameleon effect can be a used as an effective technique of stereotype modification. It has already been shown that individuals whose behaviors were mimicked showed an increased positive disposition as well as readiness to help not only the mimicker but also other people – and, in general, this seems to be an effective tool of social influence. Persons who adjust their behaviors start to act cooperatively. The pilot study presented here, run as a natural experiment, aimed to employ the chameleon effect in order to modify the stereotype of nonbelievers as perceived by participants declaring themselves to be believers. The results showed that even though mimicry positively influenced the perception of the stereotyped group, the scope of the modification was somewhat patchy. This means that the mechanism can be effectively applied as a means for the modification of stereotypes and prejudices within certain limits. Since this is one of the first studies venturing to explore this area, further work is necessary to delineate the abovementioned limits and the applicability of the measures that we discuss in the final part of this paper.

Opis:: The problem of the Polish stereotype of Africa and its change- ability is interpreted on the basis of the research conducted among c.a. 1000 students educated in Gdańsk, Sopot and Gdynia (e.g. Gdańsk University, Technical University in Gdańsk). The findings of the research disclosed that young generation of Poles had revealed quite big interest towards African problems, both to the past, present and future. But their knowledge on Africa functions in images of mythos and stereotypes which are created and propagated by mass media in less extent by school education. Important function in widening knowledge on the Continent plays development of Polish contacts with African countries (employment of Poles on contracts, creation of Polish Diaspora centers and visits of Polish tourists). Among young Polish generation functions positive picture of Africa and its cultural specificity. African reality is experienced as exotic and worth to get to know. But from the point of development of Civilization, Africa comes to light as backward, poor with many pathological problems of the continent.
