Opis:
Lucerne is a fodder perennial plant from the Fabaceae family grown under field conditions as feed for various groups of animals. This paper is concerned with the effect of electromagnetic stimulation of lucerne seed on the yield, yield parameters, and content of photosynthetic pigments in 1-2- and 5-6- year old lucerne plants. In 2012-2013 a field experiment was conducted with 5-6-year old lucerne, which was initiated in 2008. Another experiment was started in 2012 and conducted on 1-2-year old lucerne. The research material were seeds of hybrid lucerne (Medicago x varia T. Martyn) variety Radius and sowing lucerne (Medicago sativa L.) variety Ulstar. Before sowing the seeds were stimulated with the following combinations of physical factors: C – control (untreated sample), L – laser light with a surface power density of 6 mW cm–2 during 3-fold free fall, F – alternating magnetic field with an induction of 30 mT and exposure time of 30 s; L + F – laser light and magnetic field in the above doses. Electromagnetic stimulation contributed significantly to an increase in the number of shoots per 1 m2 as compared to the control. No significant difference in the weight of a single shoot was observed between the experimental combinations. 5- 6-year old lucerne was characterised by a statistically greater shoot mass as compared with 1-2-year old plants. Statistical analysis showed that the highest yield increase was observed for the samples where seeds were stimulated with laser light and both laser light and magnetic field, relative to the control. The best results concerning concentrations of chlorophyll a and b and carotenoids were observed for alternating magnetic field, where the increase amounted to 9, 11 and 13.0%, respectively, as compared to the control.
Materiałem badawczym były nasiona lucerny mieszańcowej (Medicago x varia T. Martyn.) odmiany Radius i siewnej (Medicago sativa L.) odmiany Ulstar. Przed siewem nasiona stymulowano w następujących kombinacjach: C – kontrola (bez stymulacji), L – światło lasera o powierzchniowej gęstości mocy 6 mW·cm–2 stosowane 3-krotnie, F – zmienne pole magnetyczne o indukcji 30 mT i czasie ekspozycji 30s; L+F – światło lasera i pole magnetyczne w powyższych dawkach.

We would like to acknowledge Prof Fabio Domenici at Department of Chemical Science and Technologies, University of Rome "Tor Vergata", Rome, Italy for their support in confocal image acquisition.
In this work, we present an innovative, high-throughput rotary wet-spinning biofabrication method for manufacturing cellularized constructs composed of highly-aligned hydrogel fibers. The platform is supported by an innovative microfluidic printing head (MPH) bearing a crosslinking bath microtank with a co-axial nozzle placed at the bottom of it for the immediate gelation of extruded core/shell fibers. After a thorough characterization and optimization of the new MPH and the fiber deposition parameters, we demonstrate the suitability of the proposed system for the in vitro engineering of functional myo-substitutes. The samples produced through the described approach were first characterized in vitro and then used as a substrate to ascertain the effects of electro-mechanical stimulation on myogenic maturation. Of note, we found a characteristic gene expression modulation of fast (MyH1), intermediate (MyH2), and slow (MyH7) twitching myosin heavy chain isoforms, depending on the applied stimulation protocol. This feature should be further investigated in the future to biofabricate engineered myo-substitutes with specific functionalities.

Opis:
Recent studies have suggested that transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS), and especially the theta-frequency tACS, can improve human performance on working memory tasks. However, evidence to date is mixed. Moreover, the two WM tasks applied most frequently, namely the n-back and change-detection tasks, might not constitute canonical measures of WM capacity. In a relatively large sample of young healthy participants (N = 62), we administered a more canonical WM task that required stimuli recall, as well as we applied two WM tasks tapping into other key WM functions: attention control (the antisaccade task) and relational integration (the graph mapping task). The participants performed these three tasks three times: during the left frontal 5.5-Hz and the left parietal 5.5-Hz tACS session as well as during the sham session, with a random order of sessions. Attentional vigilance and subjective experience were monitored. We observed no significant WM task accuracy gains for neither tACS session, as compared to sham. The results suggest that canonical measures of WM capacity are strongly stable in time and hardly affected by theta-frequency tACS.

Opis:
BACKGROUND: The effective radioiodine treatment of patients with DTC is possible only after raising the TSH value over 30 μUI/ml. This effect might be obtained by either endogenous or exogenous stimulation. The aim of this study was to evaluate differences in 131I biokinetics of selected regions of interest (ROIs) in cases of endogenous and exogenous stimulation. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Two groups of 50 patients were enrolled in the study. All patients were treated with 3.7 GBq of 131I; the first group after thyroid hormone withdrawal (THW), the second group after rhTSH administration (rhTSH). On the basis of post-treatment images, the uptake ratios over selected ROIs (thyroid remnants, mediastinum, liver, stomach, abdomen, and whole-body) were compared between groups. RESULTS: In the case of uptake over the whole-body and the liver, statistically significant higher values were received for the THW group. For the remaining regions, the differences between groups were statistically insignificant, but uptake ratios in the rhTSH group were generally numerically lower compared to the THW group. CONCLUSIONS: The revealed difference in radioiodine biokinetics after thyroid hormone withdrawal or administration of recombinant human TSH may influence many important aspects of patients with DTC treatment, such as the choice of proper therapeutic scheme, the cost of therapy, and the dose assessment.

Opis:
Polyphenols are a common group of plant based bioactive compounds, that can affect human health because of their antioxidant and antimicrobial properties as well as free-radical scavenging activity. An increasing interest is observed in the interaction between polyphenols and microbiota occurring in food and the human gut. The aim of the work presented here, was to evaluate the effect of some polyphenolic compounds on the growth of two strains of Bifidobacterium: B. adolescentis and B. bifidum. The influence of some flavonoids: naringinin, hesperidin, rutin, quercetin as well as phenolic acids: gallic, caffeic, p-coumaric, ferulic, chlorogenic, vanillic and sinapic was determined by a 96-well microtiter plate assay. In the experiments the effect of three different concentrations of polyphenols: 2, 20 and 100 µg/ml on the growth of Bifidobacterium strains was investigated. All tested compounds influenced the growth of the examined bacteria. Both stimulatory and inhibitory effects were observed in comparison to the positive control. The strongest impact on the growth of bifidobacteria was observed during the first hours of incubation. The constant inhibitory effect was observed for hesperidin and quercetin addition and was dose-dependent. B. bifidum showed a stronger dependence on phenolic acids content in the medium than B. adolescentis during the first hours of incubation.
