Opis:
The aim of this paper is to present the different approaches to demonopolisation used in Polish and European urban public transport, compare the efficiency of these models which have proven popular in Poland as well as to estimate the total losses incurred due to the high monopolisation of Polish public transport. The methodology of the research is based on econometric modelling (Stochastic Frontier Analysis) and on a survey conducted by the author among Public Transport Authorities. The author proves that the modern London model (competition for the market) is more efficient in Polish conditions than the classic German one (communal monopoly). The very popular in Poland combination of the two above formulas – the co-existence of a Public Transport Authority with a monopolistic publicly owned operator – is surprisingly the least efficient. Total losses due to the existence of monopolies in Polish urban bus transport are estimated for the year 2007 at the level of 10-14% of its total budget (ca. 117-149 m EURO/year). In some cities, the losses can be as high as 20-25% of the total remuneration to the public bus operator. In others, public monopolists can be as efficient as private operators in the competitive model.

Opis:
The main aim of this paper is to analyse the effect of Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) subsidies on technical efficiency of Polish dairy farms. We have distinguished several types of subsidies and provided an analysis to find out which types are most likely to engender systematic differences in technical efficiency. A balanced panel of microeconomic data on Polish dairy farms over an eight-year period (between 2004 and 2011), taken from the Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN), is used. The translog production function is estimated by employing the Bayesian approach. The empirical results show that the elasticity of production with respect to livestock is the highest, whereas with respect to feed is the lowest. The mean technical efficiency in the covered period is 83%. The research reveals the negative effect of subsidies on technical efficiency.

Opis:
The regional competitiveness is the source of national competitiveness and the efficiency measuring and relative regional efficiency comparison are crucial questions for analysts as well as for economic policy creators. Regional competitiveness becomes a subject of evaluation due to increasing significance of regions in concept of European Union. This paper deals with the application of parametric benchmarking method – Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA) for measuring technical efficiency of NUTS2 regions of V4 countries within the time period of 8 years.

Opis:
The paper discusses Bayesian productivity analysis of 27 EU Member States, USA, Japan and Switzerland. Bayesian Stochastic Frontier Analysis and a twostage structural decomposition of output growth are used to trace sources of output growth. This allows us to separate the impacts of capital accumulation, labour growth, technical progress and technical efficiency change on economic development. Since estimates of the growth components are conditioned upon model parameterisation and the underlying assumptions, a number of possible specifications are considered. The best model for decomposing output growth is chosen based on the highest marginal data density, which is calculated using adjusted harmonic mean estimator

Opis:
The role of information in agricultural development cannot be overemphasized, as information is vital in increasing production, improving marketing and enhancing distribution strategies. Therefore, the study examined the impact of information communication technologies on the technical efficiency of fish farming in Ogun State, Nigeria using a stochastic production frontier approach. In a cross-sectional survey, a multi-stage sampling technique was employed to elicit primary information from 120 fish farmers. Major ICT sources used by the fish farmers include television (81.7%), radio (79.2%) and the Internet (68.3%). The average output of catfish has positive and significant elasticity with regards to each input variable except family labour. The inefficiency model revealed that the age of farmers, farming experience, television and radio usage were significant but negatively related. That means that any increase in any of these factors will reduce the inefficiency of fish farmers and bring about an increase in technical efficiency. This implies that it is possible to increase technical efficiency in fish farming in the study area provided that the media channel (radio and television) predominantly used is improved. This study recommends a reduction in family labour usage while at the same time encouraging young people to venture into fish farming.

Opis:
The primary objective of the article was to examine the level and efficiency structure of insurance companies on life insurance market  in Poland. The study presents critical analysis of the insurance literature relating to technical efficiency of insurers, i.e. methods of estimating efficiency, the form of the efficiency  frontier  model, the choice of production factors and insurance production. The study used the methods of mathematical and econometric modelling in SFA  method. The results the technical efficiency study for 22 life insurance companies for a period between 2011-2020 using the SFA method, showed high average cost efficiency of insurers (0.9140) and lower profit efficiency (0. 8565). It was confirmed that a group of large companies achieved higher cost efficiency than the remaining companies, suggesting that large companies benefited from the scale of production.  In contrast, higher average profit efficiency was recorded for the remaining companies.

Opis:
In the global world where competition is increasing constantly, efficient use of resources is becoming more important for the textile industry. In this study, the efficiency scores and inefficiency effects of the textile industry in selected Eastern European countries were investigated using stochastic frontier analysis. The results indicate that age has a negative impact on inefficiency in the Czech Republic and Hungary. The current ratio decreases the inefficiency in Slovakia, Poland and Hungary, while time decreases that in Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Hungary.

Opis:
Oba rodzaje zakładów poprawiały swą efektywność w środowisku niskiej inflacji i niskiej dynamiki wzrostu PKB, a także wyższej konkurencji w sektorze. Redukcja kosztów działania w relacji do pozyskiwanej składki miała dodatni wpływ na efektywność spółek akcyjnych.
The goal of the study is to recognize the impact of the legal form of the property insurance company on its efficiency. The analysis covered 29 firms operating in Poland in 2002-2017, including 21 joint-stock companies and 8 mutual insurance companies (TUW). Efficiency was estimated using the parametric SFA method. The study has shown that over the entire analyzed period firms operating in the form of joint-stock companies were more effective than TUW, an average of 51.2% versus 42.5%. The effectiveness of both types of firms was positively influenced by the increase in their size, as measured by the gross written premium and assets. Both types of firms improved their efficiency in the environment of low inflation rate and low GDP growth rate as well as higher competition in the sector. The reduction of operating costs in relation to the collected premium had a positive impact on the efficiency of joint-stock companies.
