Opis:
Green roofs are increasingly popular in both new and modernised buildings. They significantly reduce the outflow of stormwater from buildings and change its composition. Wherever an urbanised area is equipped with a separate sewage system, usually stormwater goes directly to the receiver without treatment, which may affect the quality of water in the receiver. The article presents results of research carried out on the green roof of a building in Lodz, Poland. During rainfall, the flow rate from the roof was measured. With the use of the US EPA software Stormwater Management Model (SWMM) a model of the green roof was created and calibrated using rainfall data from the city’s pluviometric network. Based on the measurements of the roof runoff, as well as SWMM modelling, the degree of outfall reduction was determined. Samples of roof runoff were collected to study the characteristics of rainwater, including pH, electrical conductivity, organic compounds, nitrogen, phosphorus, and suspended solids. The results were compared with the quality of runoff from a traditional roof. Except ammonium nitrogen, values of the examined quality indicators was higher in the case of the green roof but the pollution load of almost all contaminants, except phosphorus, were lower due to a significant reduction in the volume of stormwater outflow (62-91%). The quality of stormwater discharged from the green roof improved with its age.

Opis:
At present, stormwater management is one of the key issues in urban policy. This is due to the increasing urbanisation, climate change, the growing threat of extreme (weather) events and the need to protect water resources. Legislation plays an essential role in the process of project planning and implementation. The recognition of opportunities and barriers contained in these regulations forms the basis for action by the central government, local authorities and investors. The article aims to analyse legal provisions, administrative decisions and factual circumstances that provide the foundation of administrative court rulings in Poland and regard the legal possibilities of rainwater management in urban areas. The adopted research method allows for/includes the author’s interpretation and formulation of de lege ferenda conclusions. The results of analyses of both European and national legislation and case law indicate that there is a problem with the interpretation of existing legislation and the lack of legal definitions of basic equipment and solutions in the field of water law, for instance. Such legal circumstances make it difficult to make the required legal decisions, and have a negative impact on the timing of implementation and number of these much-needed projects.

Opis:
The composition of the sediments formed in the process of stormwater pretreatment is diversified and depends on many parameters, mainly on the quality of stormwater and the land use of the catchment. The stormwater sediments are characterized by heterogeneous chemical and microbiological composition. The aim of this paper was the microbiological evaluation of the sediments from four stormwater catchments in terms of hazard to humans and the environment. The pH, and the content of organic and mineral matter were determined for the examined sediments. The microbiological analysis included the determination of the total number of psychrophilic, mesophilic, and coliform bacteria, including E. coli, and also the number of faecal Enterococci, Salmonella and Shigella. The study was conducted for fresh deposits and those stored for one year in order to determine the dynamics of changes in their biological activity.

Opis:
This study evaluates the performance of different retention solutions in stormwater drainage systems. The outcome of this study proposes a method to determine the hydraulic efficiency of different stormwater drainage retention components, in which instead of assessing retention capacities, the resistance time is used. The study was conducted in a laboratory setting, involving four different hydraulic units designed to increase channel retention in the drainage system. These units operate under diverse hydraulic conditions, including varying channel gradients, different inflow rates, and differential outflow reductions. The analysed units included a linear system (U1), a linear system with increased retention (U2 and U4), and a ring system (U3). The experiments conducted laid the groundwork for a method to determine the hydraulic efficiency of drainage components in situations where estimating efficiency based on the analysis of required capacities is impossible or very timeconsuming. The research results were utilised to assess the hydraulic efficiency of the studied hydraulic units U1-U4. The results of this study indicated a significantly higher efficiency of ring systems (U3) under all input scenarios at the highest tested flows (12L/s). In specific cases, its application allowed for over a 5-fold extension of the system’s correct operation time, and the determined hydraulic efficiency coefficient α values ranged between 4.5 and 11.4. For lower flows (10 L/s), the most effective system varied depending on the hydraulic conditions, with the channel gradient identified as the parameter that most significantly influenced the efficiency of individual solutions.

Opis:
A detailed hydrologic analysis was performed using geographic information systems and field investigations for thirty residential quarters in the Franko district of the Lviv city, Ukraine. All investigated quarters are located at the territory of the Baltic Sea catchment of the Lviv city, and the surface runoff from this area flows to the Lviv wastewater treatment plant. The total area of the investigated sub-catchment is 348.5 ha, including 58.46 % of impervious covers, 41.17 % of green spaces and 0.37 % of water bodies. The share of total impervious surfaces for each of the 30 analyzed quarters varies from 0.329 to 0.929, and the effective imperviousness – from 0.222 to 0.917. The correlation between the total and effective imperviousness was described by the power law dependency pef=(ptot) n. Two approaches were used to describe the relationship between the total and the effective imperviousness: 1) using all 30 empirical results for each quarter; 2) using the average values of the imperviousness of the total subcatchment. The obtained values of the power law exponent for these two empirical approaches are n1=1.308 and n2=1.275, respectively or 7.2 % and 9.6 % less, respectively, comparing to the corresponding value n=1.41 in the Livingston’s & Veenhuis’ approximation, obtained for 14 different highly urbanized quarters of Denver city. On the other hand, the power law exponents are 3.9% and 1.3% higher, respectively, comparing to the corresponding value n=1.259 in the approximation for the 900 km2 semi-urban watershed in Marion County, Georgia, USA.

Opis:
Perennial flooding has become a major feature in urban areas in developing economies generating research interest towards finding alternative approaches to stormwater management which could complement the existing systems and help address the challenge of flooding. One of such alternative approaches is nature-based stormwater management and flood control, the implementation of which could be affected by soil erosion. This paper, as part of a wider research, was developed to determine the extent of the threat of soil erosion to stormwater management in an urban area on the example of Greater Accra Metropolitan Area, Accra Ghana as the focus of the research. Landsat 8 images (2014) were used in the research to prepare the Landcover maps. Daily rainfall data from 6 raingauge stations from 1972 to 2014 were utilized to prepare the rainfall erosivity factor maps, whereas DEM was used to prepare the slope and slope length (SL) factor maps. The land cover map with an overall accuracy of 73.6 and Kappa 0.7122 was combined with literature sources to prepare the vegetative cover factor map, and conservation practice factor map. A soil series map, prepared and updated with literature sources and data from the Harmonized World Soil Database on physical parameters, was used to calculate the soil erodibility factor (K factor) for each soil series. These were integrated into RUSLE model as 30 m raster maps to generate a soil loss map at tons/ha/yr. The results produced rainfall erosivity index values based on the modified Fournier index ranging between 0.058 and 23.197 which is classified as low. Low soil erodibility factor (K) ranging between 2.9×10–5 and 8.5×10–2 t ha/MJ mm indicated low susceptibility to erosion, SL factor value showing areas of low to almost flat relief with a few isolated areas of moderate slope length were generated. A soil loss of 69,5918 tons/ha/yr classified the soils as having high potential soil loss. The results showed a very low soil loss threat of 0–5.1853 tons/Ha/yr for more than 90% of the study area. Targeted intervention for source areas with high potential soil loss will contain any threat of erosion and sediment yield to the implementation of an infiltration-based stormwater management and flood control system.

Opis:
Stormwater transports directly into rivers eroded soil, animal wastes, pesticides, fertilizers and other potential pollutants. Bioretention is often designed to capture and treat it using the natural properties of soil and plants. However, selection of appropriate media structure and plants need to be adequately studied. This study investigated the performance of bioretention system in removing stormwater pollutants using Dracaena, a local plant, also called Song of India Plants. Physical model of three Columns A, B and C were developed having five layered filter media of different configurations whose materials were analyzed to meet the design standards. The plants were introduced into Columns A and C leaving out B as control experiment. The quality parameters were determined before and after treatments at ages 10, 20, 30 and 40 days when Dracaena plants were introduced into bioretention models. The results showed that the bioretention model drastically improved stormwater quality by reducing values of electrical conductivity, total coliforms (TC), fecal coliforms (FC), total suspended solids (TSS) and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) as compared to the tested raw stormwater samples. The filter media in both Columns A and C substantially reduced the pollutant levels to standard discharge limits for all parameters tested such as TSS, TC, FC, BOD and nitrates. BOD fell within the recommended standard after 20 days of treatment in Column C with considerable reduction in TC and FC by 68.9% and 75.4% respectively when compared to raw stormwater sample. However, Column C completely removed TC and FC at 40 days which are pathogen indicators in wastewater. This study would be useful to the stakeholders for sustainable stormwater treatment and management.

Opis:
The surface water quality assessment could be based on a combined physical and chemical analysis, but it could also be determined with bioindication methods. Classical physicochemical analysis is in most cases more expensive and time-consuming than the bioindication methods. This type of analysis also requires expensive equipment and shows the situation in the water only at the moment of sampling. Although the bioindication methods are often complicated, they allow a relatively inexpensive estimation of the water quality. Moreover, during their implementation, the substances harmful to the environment are not generated, and the obtained results usually reflect the total interaction of all factors and substances to the analyzed living organisms. Indicator organisms or their communities applied to the research, with identified ranges of tolerance to selected factors, could help to determine the physical and chemical parameters of water. This paper presents a bioindication study with an effect of stormwater system on the receiver – the Bystrzyca river, in Lublin, Poland. The level of saprophyty of the river sector was calculated based on the selected species of algae (diatoms and green algae) and the influence of the stormwater discharge on the communities of these organisms was determined.

Opis:
W referacie przedstawiono analizę procesu doboru obudowy wykopów tymczasowych w celu budowy zbiornika retencyjnego.
The paper presents the analysis of the process of selecting the support for temporary excavations for the purposes of construction of the impounding reservoir. The design assumed the construction of the prefabricated reinforced concrete tank under ground level at the depth of about 5 metres. Due to the existing situation which resulted from the fact of the need to construct the residential buildings first, the foundations of the impounding reservoir could not be constructed without securing the excavation walls. The planned location of the reservoir near the location of building foundations and in the distance of 8 m at each side was planned. As it was hazardous to use the vibro-hammers for the foundations of the already constructed buildings, Kopras company was requested to present the solution of such protection.
