Opis:
Recent interest in the effects of streambed and near-subsurface (benthic and hyporheic) processes on stream ecosystems has motivated study of the hydrodynamics of stream-subsurface interactions. Hydrodynamic transport places an important control on the delivery of reactive species such as contaminants and ecologically-relevant substances such as nutrients to the benthic and hyporheic zones. Conversely, biological pro-cesses such as biofilm growth and physicochemical processes such as colloid deposition can alter the transport environment within sedimentary systems. Multiple feedbacks between biological, chemical, and transport processes make these interfacial sedimentary environments very com-plex. Experimental results are presented to illustrate the feedbacks be-tween hydrodynamic stream-subsurface exchange, biofilm development, and fine particle deposition. These studies demonstrate that a compre-hensive interdisciplinary approach is required to assess even the most basic dynamic processes in these systems, such as the evolution of in-terfacial fluxes over time. We suggest that it is useful to consider these processes to be biophysicochemical in nature. That is, in such complex environmental systems, it is misleading to attempt to consider processes in isolation; rather, understanding of system dynamics can only come from an integrated approach that considers feedbacks among and be-tween biological, physical, and chemical processes.

Streszczenie w języku angielskim
The growth rate of roach, Rutilus rutilus (L.), in three research cycles was compared on three sites on the river (Pilica) differing in the degree of water pollution and fish density. No significant differences were observed in the growth determined in independent research cycles on the same sites (Fig. 1).It has been shown that the growth rate is inversely proportional to density. In most polluted water, despite several times lower density the growth rate is lower (Fig. 3). When analysing the shape of the curve, the differentiation of the growth rate in an annual cycle, the winter “decrease” in length of adult generations, was explained by driving out weaker individuals from wintering places (old river-beds, marginal water bodies) to the extreme environment — the river in winter (Fig. 2).The growth rate of roach from the Pilica and the regularities which control it has been compared with results of other authors investigating different types of water (Fig. 3). It has been confirmed that the main factor stimulating the growth of roach is the length of the vegetation period, quality of food and population density.

Opis:
Specific conditions in urban areas favour large species richness, these are also places prone to the anthropogenic pressure. As a result, many studies on aquatic habitats in urban ecosystems have been carried out. The aim of this study was to investigate the diversity of diatom assemblages developing in artificial environment in relation to water chemical parameters. The study was performed on a small water outflow in south-eastern Poland, which started in the storm sewage. The water at the studied sites was characterized by alkaline pH and low content of nutrients. The values of other chemical parameters were highly variable, depending on the research season. A total of 113 taxa were identified in five research seasons; most of them prefer circumneutral and fertile habitats, with a high content of biogens and are tolerant to water pollutions. Aerophytic and terrestrial taxa were observed in the analyzed materials in high diversity.

Opis:
This paper presents the results of a floristic study focusing on taxa representing the genus Gomphonema in Kobylanka stream, situated ca 30 km NW of Kraków. Species belonging to the genus Gomphonema Ehr. were very frequently observed diatom taxa in the material studied. Amongst 272 diatom taxa recorded in the studied material, 13 belong to this genus. Some of them are widespread and often found in Poland; others such as Gomphonema micropus Kutz. and G. sarcophagus Greg. are rarely or for the first time reported from the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland. G. brebissonii Reichardt, G. lagerheimii A. Cl. and G. parallelistriatum Lange-Bert. and Reichardt are new to the Polish flora. Identification of the diatom flora was based on light (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Morphological characters and dimensions of frustules were measured for all taxa reported. Ecological requirements, remarks on distribution, and photographic documentation are also given.

Opis:
The Baryczka stream is a small (about 20 km long), left bank tributary of the River San (Podkarpackie Voivodeship). Studies on diversity of diatom communities using OMNIDIA software were conducted in 2010 and 2011. Diatomaceous indices IPS, GDI and TDI and Van Dam et al. classification system were used for water quality assessment. Planothidium lanceolatum, Cocconeis placentula var. lineata, Achnanthidium minutissimum var. minutissimum, Nitzschia linearis, Rhoicosphenia abbreviata, Navicula lanceolata and Naicula gregaria were the most numerous. Values of the IPS index indicate good water quality (II–III class). Based on the GDI index, waters of the Baryczka stream were classified to III class water quality. The TDI index indicated poor and bad ecological state on the most sampling sites. On all sampling sites alaliphilous (pH>7) diatoms taxa predominated. The most common were eutraphentic and hypereutraphentic diatoms. With respect to trophy, it was shown that α- and β-mesosaprobous diatoms were the most common (III and II class water quality).
