Opis:: We study the evolution of income and wealth inequality in an economy undergoing endogenous structural change with imperfect labor mobility. Our economy features two sectors: services and manufacturing. With faster TFP growth in manufacturing, labor reallocates from manufacturing to services. This reallocation is slower due to labor mobility frictions, which in turn, raises relative wages in services. As a result, income inequality is higher. Moreover, we study the impact of structural change on wealth inequality. Its economic intuition is more ambiguous. On the one hand, increased income dispersion implies increased dispersion in the ability to accumulate wealth across individuals. On the other hand, younger workers who hold the least assets are the most mobile across sectors. Their incomes are improved, which boosts their savings, which works towards equalizing wealth distribution. The consequence of these changes can only be verified with a computational model. To this end, we construct an overlapping generations model with two sectors: manufacturing and services. Our model also features heterogeneous individuals. With our model, we are able to show how the structural change affected the evolution of income and wealth inequality in Poland as of 1990.

Opis:: The aim of the study is to present the issues of research on sustainable intensification of the agriculture, in the specific context of the European Union and to present research procedure for such study. Proposed framework is based on the use of Eurostat data, to conduct efficiency (DEA) and productivity (Malmquist TFP index) analysis, to estimate the sustainable intensification index. Further structural determinants of this process might be assessed by means of panel regression. On the basis of the literature review carried out, the study may be limited to testing the impact of concentration, specialisation and orientation of agricultural production. As control variables, those describing endogenous, exogenous and institutional conditions should be included in the study.

Opis:: The paper analyses the consequences of structural change in the presence of non-stationary stochastic processes I(1) or I(2). The structural change may concern the deterministic structure (in particular, the trend and the constant term) as well as the process generating the stochastic part. The focus of the paper is on the case of a discrete change in a regime for which the moment of switch is known. A change in the deterministic part does not alter the character of the cointegration relationships but its consequences for cotrending and cobreaking are interesting. The consequences of a change in the stochastic part are more complex, because then the stochastic process as well as the deterministic structure of the VECM are modified. The restrictions are analysed for both cases.

Tytuł:: Productivity convergence in manufacturing in the European Union : the role of economic structure

Opis:: The article aims to empirically validate three questions. Have productivity differences in European manufacturing been increasing or diminishing and what has been the situation in Central and Eastern Europe countries? Are productivity differences homogenous over time and across manufacturing industries? What is the role of the internal structure of manufacturing for convergence? For this purpose, an analysis of σ- and β-convergence in 11 manufacturing industries has been conducted, making use of shift-share decomposition techniques. A complex view of catching-up is demonstrated with heterogeneity over time and across industries. Convergence occurred in Western Europe until approximately 1990, but since then disparities have been increasing and CEE countries were the only ones catching up. Convergence took place predominantly in medium-tech industries, while both low-tech and high-tech industries experienced divergence. Structural differences account for a minor share of the productivity disparities; however, changes in employment structures and productivity together led to the formation of two clubs of countries: low-tech, low productivity and high-tech, high productivity countries.

Opis:: The aim of the article is to present the spatial diversity of the sectoral transformation of the employment structure in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) in the period 2010–2018. The current level of development of the service sector in the EU is primarily a consequence of the political and economic conditions that have existed in these countries in recent decades. With today’s changes in the global economy, related to the transition from industrial to post-industrial to informational phase of civilization, the adaptation processes of various economic structures are an important research issue. The result is a redevelopment of a sectoral economic structure in which industrial activity, a fundamental economic base in the industrial phase, gives way to service activities, especially related to the digital economy. Understanding the rules governing the evolution of the three-sectoral structure of employment in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe is an important problem both theoretically and practically. The author presents the mechanisms for changing the three-sector employment structure over time in the different countries of Central and Eastern Europe, finding not only the intensity of change but also their consistency. This approach shows one of the most crucial elements of the competitiveness of regional and national spatial systems.

Opis:: This paper examines the short- and long- term effects of increasing minimum wage rates for farm workers in South Africa on structural unemployment and rising food prices in the economy. The Pearson correlation model was used to establish association between variables. Analysis found a negative association (–0.651) between wage rate and employment of farm workers, while a positive (0.021) association was found to exist between wage rate (W) increases and food prices (Fp). No association (0.001) was found between employment and food prices (Fp). Co-integration was further employed to determine the short-term and long-term relationships, and the analysis found wages to have a positive and significant (0.453) effect on structural unemployment of farm workers. Unemployment was observed to be wage elastic in the long term and wage inelastic in the short term. The long-term relationship showed increasing unemployment in agriculture (L) and rising food prices (Fp) (1.168), while the short-term relationship showed a signifi cant error correction coeffi cient (ECT) with an expected starting point of 41.9% adjustment rate towards long-term equilibrium within a year. Structural analysis confi rmed an inelastic demand for basic food. The study suggest government subsidies to farmers through cost-cutting technologies and farm worker’s skills development on the use of these technologies.
W niniejszym artykule zbadano krótko- oraz długookresowy wpływ wzrostu wynagrodzenia minimalnego pracowników rolnych w Afryce Południowej na bezrobocie strukturalne oraz wzrastające ceny żywności. W celu ustalenia związku między zmiennymi wykorzystano współczynnik korelacji Pearsona. Z analizy wynika, że istnieje ujemna korelacja (–0,651) między poziomem wynagrodzenia a zatrudnieniem wśród pracowników rolnych. Korelacja dodatnia (0,021) zaistniała za to pomiędzy wzrostem poziomu wynagrodzenia (W) a cenami żywności (Fp). Nie stwierdzono związku (0,001) pomiędzy zatrudnieniem a cenami żywności (Fp). Następnie posłużono się analizą kointegracji, by określić krótko- i długookresowe relacje przyczynowe. Okazało się, że płace miały pozytywny i istotny (0,453) wpływ na bezrobocie strukturalne wśród pracowników rolnych. Bezrobocie było elastyczne w stosunku do płac w długim okresie i nieelastyczne w krótkim okresie. Długookresowa kointegracja ukazała wzrost bezrobocia w rolnictwie (L) oraz wzrost cen żywności (Fp) (1,168), natomiast krótkookresowa ujawniła istotny parametr korekty błędem (ECT) z przewidywanym punktem początkowym na poziomie 41,9% dostosowań zmiennych do równowagi długookresowej rocznie. Analiza strukturalna potwierdziła nieelastyczny popyt na podstawową żywność. W artykule zaleca się subsydiowanie pracowników rolnych przez rząd przez zastosowanie technologii zmniejszających koszty, a także rozwój umiejętności pracowników w zakresie technologii zmniejszających koszty.

Opis:: The aim of this study is to realize an analysis of the trade relations between Albania and Greece. Through the study, researchers want to show how trade relations between these countries have changed during the years, and also want to reveal some of the things that dominate these relations. Part of the study will also be the analysis that will help understand the relationship between the trade flows and the Greek GDP. Also, it will be possible to see if these trade flows have experienced any shock during the period taken into consideration. The analysis will be realized by using an econometric linear model, and to discover if there has been any shock, the Error Correcting Model will be used. The study proved that Greece is one of the main trade partners of Albania. The volume of the trade flows with Greece represents an important part of the overall trade flows of Albania. Based on the dates analyzed the study revealed that imports composition has changed more in comparison with the exports. The study also revealed that there has been a shock in the trade flows during the period taken into consideration.
