Opis:: Giddens constructed the sociological theory using the legacy of sociological thought. Since the mid 1970’s this sociologist has elaborated his very concept of the “duality of structure” which sounded very illuminating. Multiplicity of theoretical orientations, which had been the subject of an analytical processing, became the departure point for drawing up a new theoretical system. The cognitive value of the concept system proposed by A. Giddens is significant. The originality of Gidden’s decisionsand the theoretical identity in the assumptions that specify the structure, in a way emphasized by the creator of the structuration theory, certainly directs critics’ interest to the agreements concerning the acting subject. Quite often, they make their position more precise after following through the continuity and changes of A. Giddens’ thoughts presented in his later works.

How does Polish school teach? The education system in the experiences of teachers and parents

Opis:: This study presents the Polish education system taking into account the assumptions of Anthony Giddens' structuration theory. By exploring the experiences of parents and teachers through individual in-depth interviews, it was possible to create a model of a silhouette of a committed teacher who faces various difficulties when working at school. These difficulties are presented in relation to the realities of an educational system that has undergone major changes in recent years. The work presents attempts to negotiate with the rules of the education system, which form a coherent picture of the realities of Polish education.
Niniejsza praca przedstawia polski system edukacji z uwzględnieniem założeń teorii strukturacji Anthony’ego Giddensa. Poznanie doświadczeń rodziców oraz nauczycieli poprzez przeprowadzenie indywidualnych wywiadów pogłębionych pozwoliło na stworzenie modelu sylwetki nauczyciela zaangażowanego, który pracując w szkole, musi zmierzyć się z różnymi trudnościami. Trudności te zostały przedstawione w odniesieniu realiów systemu oświaty, który w ostatnich latach przeszedł gruntowane zmiany. W pracy zostały przestawione próby negocjacji z obowiązującymi w systemie edukacji regułami, które tworzą spójny obraz realiów polskiej edukacji.

Bazę analityczną dla niniejszej pracy stanowiła treść oficjalnego forum fanów World of Warcraft.

Communal practices in postmodern city : in search of new research perspective

Opis:: Wychodząc od najnowszych ustaleń studiów nad społecznościami w kwestii tzw. Community Question, a także aktualnych trendów w socjologii miasta i polityk miejskich, artykuł podejmuje problem procesów powstawania i reprodukowania wspólnot lokalnych we współczesnych miastach oraz kulturowych mechanizmów i uwarunkowań tych procesów. Odrzucając zarówno środowiskowy determinizm, jak i kulturowy redukcjonizm w studiach nad społecznościami, zakładam, że ponowoczesne miasto jest przestrzenią strukturacji różnorodnych wspólnot miejskich, które wykraczają poza tradycyjnie pojmowane sąsiedztwo, a także poza sieci osobiste i kulturowe wspólnoty wyobrażone. Przyjmuję, że w procesach strukturacji wspólnot lokalnych ważną rolę odgrywają kulturowe charakterystyki terytorium, w tym przede wszystkim jego znaczenia symboliczne, a sam proces strukturowania się wspólnot miejskich przebiega w sferze kulturowej świadomości zbiorowej i realizuje się poprzez osadzone na danym terytorium wspólnotowe praktyki kulturowe jednostek. Artykuł postuluje wykorzystanie teorii praktyk oraz teorii scen w analizie współczesnych przejawów wspólnotowości miejskiej i wskazuje na mechanizmy strukturacji miejskich wspólnot.
Having the latest findings of community studies regarding “Community Question”, as well as current trends in urban sociology and urban policies as points of departure, the paper addresses the problem of contemporary urban communities’ production and reproduction processes, as well as cultural mechanisms and factors of these processes. Rejecting both the ecological determinism and cultural reductionism of community studies, I assume that postmodern city is a space of structuration of diverse urban communities that go far beyond the traditional concept of neighbourhood, personal networks or imagined communities. I assume that culture in general and symbolic meanings of territory in particular, play crucial role in the process of structuration of urban communities, and that structuration process takes place in collective cultural consciousness and is mediated by territorially embedded cultural practices of individuals. Therefore, I argue for applying the practice theory and the theory of scenes in analysis of contemporary urban communities and develop my argument pointing at potential mechanisms of community structuration.

Opis:: Due to surprisingly different historical testimonies about Polish identity and character – Poles being astonishingly kind-hearted, naive and polite and at the same time quarrelsome and incapable of acting together – how should a peculiar weakness of Polish social existence leading to „ritual chaos” be understood? Gombrowicz in his ironic historical dramas – in Ślub (Wedding), in Historia (History), in Operetka (Operetta) – leads us to discovering mature immaturity understood much more widely than just criticism of Polish form or „trap” suggesting the possibility of critical but conscious accepting Polishness as a feeling of helplessness in the face of this world powers, a weak, unfinished and vague identity and at the same time showing unexpected benefit from this seemingly hopeless situation: Polish weakness, self-conscious, unassertive identity gives a chance to react more flexibly, maturely to revolutionary changes in contemporary world. Speaking the language of contemporary subjective sociology the Habermas vision of ideal community of communication is defeated by Anthony Giddens’s description of structuration in which true mechanisms of creating efficient collective identities can be seen.
