Promoting European Study Abroad: The Sociological and Marketing Analysis of institutional efforts and student attitudes
Analiza socjologiczno-marketingowa materiałów promocyjnych wymian studenckich w Europie
Autorzy:
Czopik, Zuzanna
Opis:
This master's thesis aims to explore the promotional materials of universities across Europe, ex-exchange students' attitudes towards these materials, and future marketing recommendations. First, the study draws upon the previous research in the sociological and marketing realms of study abroad mobilities in Europe. It focuses on the motivational factors of going abroad that include the personal and professional development as well as the promotion of global citizens living in the neoliberal 'flexible' world. Then, the study consists of two phases of analysis: the university website analysis and the focus group. The website analysis consists of 37 university websites from four different European countries (Bulgaria, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Spain) and one non-European country as an interesting comparison (Argentina). It presents what different universities and countries focus on when promoting studying abroad. For instance, it concludes that there are differences between countries like Ireland or the Netherlands where the promotion happens at every possible level, be it study abroad fairs, colourful infographics, webinars with international students, or interactive maps of destinations, and countries like Spain or Bulgaria where exchanges are not necessarily initially promoted. The focus group was a meeting with 8 previous exchange students from 8 different countries, seven of which were European. This phase helped conclude that the most powerful marketing promotion of studying abroad, according to students, is the possibility to talk to previous exchange participants as well as a simplified process of application and a well-established support system. The focus group participants also drew attention to what a stereotypical exchange student looks like and how the promotion should take into account the individual needs of the specific target audiences. All these findings contributed to a better understanding of the promotional materials already in use by the universities and those hopefully yet to come following the recommendations included in this study.

Opis:
The present study examined the apologies of 18 study abroad (SA) students during a short-term SA experience in Madrid, Spain. Apologies were assessed with a discourse completion task (DCT) consisting of five vignettes that varied across three variables: relative social status of the interlocutor, relative social distance, and seriousness of the offense. Based on performance ratings assigned to them by two native Spanish speakers, the students made significant gains in pragmatic appropriateness from pretest to posttest, on two out of the five individual vignettes, and on the five combined vignettes. Examination of the students’ apologies before and after SA further revealed that they increased several strategies during their time abroad. Despite these gains, other aspects of the SA group’s performance remained the same or, in some cases, moved in the opposite direction of the target norm. Moreover, the students also demonstrated continued overreliance on routine, formulaic expressions on the posttest DCT while underusing some important target-like mitigation strategies. Given the study’s findings, the researcher offers recommendations for teaching pragmatics before and during the SA experience.

Study abroad contexts are assumed by foreign language learners to be the best environment for effective language learning. This article reports on beliefs of first year Polish students of German studies. The collected qualitative data show that Polish students do not differ from other learners with regard to their opinions on study abroad and its benefits (and disadvantages) for speaking German. The article underlines the need to reflect with learners about their beliefs, experiences, and expectations of language learning.

Opis:
This research aims to identify and rank the problems which international students face during study in Belarus. The main method was descriptive research conceptualized within sojourner theory. Preliminary interviews followed by a survey (N=300) revealed that the sojourners’ problems were in the following order, from major to minor: (a) psychological and health-related challenges, primarily, homesickness and health disorders; (b) academic challenges, such as the new educational system and taking exams; (c) sociocultural challenges, especially communication with native speakers; (d) general living challenges. To prevent and solve these problems, the study provides experimentally based recommendations how to foster a supporting learning environment.

Opis:
To provide insights into a wide array of individual learner variables implicated in intercultural education in home and study abroad contexts, this study systematically reviewed the effects of such variables on the development of intercultural competence. The corpus consisted of 56 journal articles published over the past two decades (2000-2020). The purpose of this study was to explore: (a) learner variables that were described in research on intercultural competence, including, inter alia, their age, gender, first language (L1) background, proficiency level, and attitudinal orientations; (b) settings in which learners’ intercultural development was studied, including both home contexts and study abroad contexts; and (c) effects of learner variables on the development of their intercultural competence. The results of this synthesis indicate that a growing number of studies have started to document intercultural instruction in both home and study abroad contexts. They show how learner variables were considered in conducting these studies and how variation in these variables impacted the effectiveness of instruction that targeted intercultural competence. The findings can considerably broaden our understanding of both opportunities and constraints in intercultural education in terms of learner variables and in particular variables that make the most contribution to intercultural development in home and study abroad contexts.

Opis:
This paper presents qualitative research examining to what extent sojourns abroad engage their participants in intercultural interactions and whether or not such experience translates into students’ intercultural growth. The results of the study demonstrated that studying abroad did not provide students with ample opportunities to immerse into the local community and fully discover a new cultural environment. However, students surrounded by local and their fellow international students met foreign cultures, which motivated them to explore and interpret the encountered diversity, and thus equipped them with knowledge about foreign cultures, sensitizing them to cultural diversity. Sometimes such contacts challenged students’ preconceived judgments and stereotypes of specific cultural groups, their ways of thinking, valuing and acting, and resulted, to a lesser or greater extent, in rethinking these, leading to changing attitudes and values. International experiences also stimulated students to self-analyze their own cultural identity, and thereby contributed to their growth in self-awareness in this respect. By offering opportunities for experiencing cultural differences and prompting students to develop coping strategies and to make references to the home culture, the sojourn is thus of significant importance for tertiary students, allowing for fostering their intercultural development to a certain degree.

Opis:
Foreign language learning innvolves cognitive, affective and social functioning of the persons involved in this experience. As a social practice, it is also related to the learners’ perceptions of their identity, specifically to their language identity which refers to the relationship between one’s sense of self and the language used to communicate. This implies that using a system of communication, the speaker develops a new sense of self that remains in a dynamic relation with other senses of self, based on (an)other language(s) the person knows. Language learners’ identity is no longer defined as fixed and stable but as “complex, contradictory and multifaceted” (Norton 1997, p. 419). It is dynamic because learners enter into various discourses and negotiate their position within different communities of practice. Language both shapes and is shaped by identity of its users. This article discusses how students of English as a foreign language perceive the role of this language in their construction of selves/identity. First, postmodern conceptualisations of identity and identity categories are presented along with their relevance to the field of Second Language Acquisition. Second, selected empirical studies pertaining to adult immigrant contexts, foreign language contexts and study abroad contexts are briefly reported. Then the results of an empirical study on the students’ of English (n=83) perceptions of their identity in the context of foreign language study are introduced. The study revealed that most of the participants realise complex relations between language learning and their identity and are aware of the effects that studying English (as well as other foreign languages) has on them. English gave them new possibilities in life, allowed them to communicate with people worldwide and make friends with them. They have new and interesting prospects for the future. It affected their personality by making them more open-minded and tolerant of otherness. The knowledge of English gives the students power, prestige, and opportunities to live and work in a changing world of complex social relations.

Change through exchange? Belarusian Students in Germany and Their Attitudes Towards Europe
Autorzy:
Rohe, Maren
Opis:
The thesis explores the perceptions Belarusian students in Germany have of Europe, and how these are informed by their stay abroad. It analyses qualitative in-depth interviews with Belarusians studying in Germany in order to approach its research questions: Which perceptions of and attitudes towards Europe and the European Union do Belarusian students abroad hold? In particular, do Belarusians perceive Europe as their 'self' or as 'other', and does studying abroad fulfil the expectations of the European Union regarding people-to-people contacts? It finds that the students mostly perceive European values as standing in contrast to Belarusian ones, and diverge in their opinions to which extent Belarus should and can adopt values perceived as European. Positive attitudes towards the EU do not necessarily lead to a wish for Belarus to join it, and different forms of European self-identification are evident. The high expectations the EU has of people-to-people contacts between Belarus and the EU can only partly be fulfilled.

Young people experiencing multiple mobilities : in search of an oasis of youth across Europe
Autorzy:

Opis:
In this study, we look at those young Europeans who have undertaken more than one Erasmus stay abroad during their higher education to reflect on spaces for youth development. On the basis of 18 qualitative interviews with such Erasmus students, we propose the concept of an ‘oasis of youth’ to highlight the potential for the exploration of the self that occurs through participation in mobilities. We revisit and reassess J.J. Arnett’s concept of emerging adulthood to reflect on spaces for exploration for young people in Europe. As the analysis suggests, this ‘oasis of youth’ may symbolise a niche in which young people live out a youthful lifestyle (being), while getting prepared for the transitions to adulthood (becoming). Beyond this particular case, the concept of an oasis of youth may serve to describe the diverse social spaces that express the social value of youth allowing them to live youth momentum while in education, despite growing uncertainty and harshened structural conditions.
