Opis:
The interaction between sphalerite and pyrite was investigated by dissolution test, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), zeta potential measurement and density functional theory (DFT) calculation. Dissolution tests indicated that sphalerite dissolution was promoted due to the galvanic interaction between sphalerite and pyrite. The Zn2+ ion concentration increased with increasing pyrite content and dissolved time. XPS analysis results demonstrated that a new oxidation product was formed on the sphalerite surface in the presence of pyrite in a pulp. Zeta potential measurements showed that the isoelectric point of sphalerite increased from 3.3 to 5.4 due to galvanic interaction. DFT calculation results suggested that electron transfer from sphalerite to pyrite occurred when they contacted. The Zn 4s and S 3p states of sphalerite lost electrons. The Fe 4p and 4s of pyrite states obtained electrons, and Fe 3d and S 3s states lost a small number of electrons. The surface oxidation of sphalerite was promoted due to the interaction with pyrite, and the collectorless floatability of sphalerite decreased.

Opis:
Pyrite is the most common sulphide gangue mineral occurring in base metal sulphide ores around the world. Pyrite is known to galvanically interact with valuable minerals such as chalcopyrite, altering their electrochemical and flotation behaviour. Different types of pyrite are known to vary in texture, chemical composition and electrochemical activity. However, the effect that these differences have on the degree of pyrite interaction with chalcopyrite are not well studied. This work examines two distinct types of pyrite from different deposits that have a similar chemical composition, but vary greatly in texture. It investigates the way in which these pyrites interact with chalcopyrite surfaces, affecting both its electrochemical behaviour and floatability. It was found that the Renison pyrite was characterised by a much higher level of surface activity than the Huanzala pyrite. This was attributed to the elevated levels of arsenic within the mineral’s crystalline matrix.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to determine the effect of particle size on the oxidation and flotation behavior of galena particles. Coarse (-0.074+0.038 mm), intermediate (-0.038+0.025 mm) and fine (-0.025 mm) galena particles were used in this study. Dissolution tests demonstrated that the amount of oxidation products increased with the decrease of particle sizes. The surface oxidization of galena was the greatest at pH 7.3, followed by pH 12 and 9, which were consist with the result of XPS. The micro-flotation results indicated that the effect of pH on the flotation recovery of galena enhanced with the reduction of particle sizes. The decreasing of particle sizes increases both the sorption rate of collector and the dissolution of galena, while the generation of hydrophilic product caused by dissolution is dominant, rendering the mineral hydrophilic. This study shows the differences in the surface oxidation and flotation behavior of different size fractions of galena particles. To promote the flotation recovery of the fine size fraction of galena particles, alleviating their oxidation is the key.

Opis:
In previous study, the promising results of separating enargite from non-arsenic copper sulfides were obtained using selective surface oxidation in pure mineral systems. However, this technology was not well understood in real ores or concentrates. In this study, the flotation separation of enargite from complex copper concentrates by selective surface oxidation was investigated. The effects of regrinding, pulp pH, NaClO concentration, conditioning time and flotation time on separation of enargite from NECu minerals were studied. The mineralogical characteristics of the flotation feed and products were showed as an instructive tool to understand the separation results. According to the results of EDTA extraction, the possible mechanism for separation of enargite from NECu minerals is that enargite is more resistant to oxidized compared to NECu minerals. The following order for the oxidation of NECu minerals and enargite is obtained: chalcopyrite (chalcocite, digenite)> enargite (covellite).

Opis:
This paper presents a study on anodizing titanium alloy Ti-6Al-7Nb in electrolyte of dilute sulfuric acid. The effects of the parameters – voltage, anodizing time, and electrode distance on the anodic film properties have been investigated. The anodic layers are found to become more compact with the increase of the applied voltage in the electrolytic cell. The microstructure, chemical element distribution and mechanical properties, i.e. microroughness and microhardness of the anodic coatings obtained at different operating conditions have been evaluated.

Opis:
Surface decarburization of high silicon spring steel in ambient air was studied. The experimental results confirmed the decarburized mechanism under AC1 temperature, in the temperature range of AC1-AC3 and AC3-G. Under AC1 temperature, pearlite spheroidization and surface decarburization are carried out simultaneously and pearlite spheroidization is reinforced. Considering the oxidation loss depth, the “true ferrite decarburized depth” at 850 °C (AC3-G) is still smaller than that at 760°C (AC1-AC3). That is because an “incubation period” must pass away before ferrite decarburization occurs in the temperature range of AC3-G, and the ferrite decarburized rate is limited to being equal to the partial decarburized rate.

Opis:
In this study, the oxidation roasting was used to modify the ilmenite chemistry to improve the collector adsorption and ilmenite flotation behavior. The results indicated that the increase of the roasting temperature up to 600 ºC increased the ilmenite flotation recovery. The maximum collector adsorption density occurred on ilmenite roasted at 600 °C which resulted in the increase of ilmenite flotation recovery from 73.5% to 91% at pH 6.3. This improvement was attributed to a greater conversion of Fe2+ to Fe3+ ions and significant decrease in the zeta potential of ilmenite. At the roasting temperatures of 750 °C and 950 °C, ilmenite was converted to rutile and some trivalent iron containing phases such as hematite and pseudobrookite. Under these conditions, the collector adsorption and hence ilmenite flotation improved, however the flotation recovery decreased after the roasting at 950 °C.

Opis:
The gold recovery from cyanidation tailings was only 4.01% with the general flotation process, the surface analyses of flotation products were performed, and the results showed that the poor gold recovery with general flotation process was due to the passive films covering the surface of the gold bearing pyrite. These films are mainly hydrophilic hydroxides of Ca, Fe and Mg, at the same time, the depression of CN– to pyrite flotation in the flotation slurry was also a main contributing factor. With the surface repair regeneration procedures, it was proven that sulfuric acid pretreatment plays a dominant role in the removing and cleaning of passive films, while destroying free cyanides in the slurry. Sodium carbonate was then used as a buffering pH modifier and as a slurry dispersant after sulfuric acid pretreatment. The gold recovery was as high as 93.41%, compared to the original gold recovery of 4.01%.

Opis:
Organic compounds are the most diverse group of contaminants. The largest anthropogenic source of these contaminants in water is municipal and industrial wastewater. One of the indicators of surface water pollution is biological oxygen demand (BOD). Purifying water from organic micropollutants is a serious challenge and requires the development of newer and more effective methods. The removal of such contaminants is most effective only in advanced oxidation processes (AOP), which include UV photolysis and photocatalysis. The presented results are from preliminary research to evaluate the effectiveness of water treatment by ultraviolet (UV) photolysis and photocatalysis. Treatment efficiency was evaluated on the basis of changes in the BOD index before and after the advanced oxidation process of raw water. The values of the BOD5 index determined in accordance with PN-EN 25813:1997. The exposure time of the samples was a maximum of 60 minutes. The tested material was water samples taken from the Rudawa River, which is one of the drinking water sources for Krakow. The initial BOD5 value (expressed as concentration of O2) for all samples was about 8 mg/L but it has decreased to over 2 mg/L due to AOP processes. This means that after an hour, more than 75% of organic compounds present in the raw water were removed. For photocatalysis (TiO2-MMT), the exposure time of the samples was a maximum of 35 minutes. Water samples taken from the Rudawa River were also used as test material. The initial BOD5 value for all samples was about 9 mg/L but it has decreased to about 4 mg/L due to the photocatalysis process. This means that after 35 minutes, 55% of the organic compounds present in the raw water were removed.
