Opis:
Problem identification: The desire for motherhood is one of the top priorities for most female young cancer survivors. The risk of infertility after cancer therapy is an important concern with several physical and emotional consequences. This comprehensive literature review aims to summarize and contextualize recent research that has been carried out on female fertility after cancer, suggesting future research and clinical directions. Literature search: Searches included the keywords “cancer”, “female”, “adults”, and “fertility”. Studies were selected if focused on infertility issues in female cancer survivors. Data synthesis: Eight themes were identified: the effects of anticancer treatments on fertility; fertility preservation methods; international recommendations regarding infertility risk; health professionals’ attitudes towards fertility preservation; patient’s concerns regarding the risk of infertility; patients' information needs; and the impact of the risk of infertility in patient’s quality of life. Conclusions: Psycho-oncologists should be integrated in the oncofertility teams to assess patients’ needs before cancer treatment initiation.

Opis:
Survivorship bias is the difference in returns between a portfolio composed of surviving funds and a portfolio of all funds of the period. In the literature, survivorship bias is indicated as one of the methodological errors that may affect the results and conclusions of research on the performance of investment funds. The purpose of the study conducted was to determine survivorship bias for Polish open-end investment funds in the period 2005-2015. The analysis was made on an annual basis by adopting two different approaches to active funds (operating throughout and at the end of sub-periods of research). It highlighted the factors that may affect the size of the effect of survivorship bias. The bias appeared to be very small, but this does not mean that it should be completely ignored in research. The key factors influencing its size included the change in the management of investment strategies and mergers with other funds.

In undisturbed sites not all genets of the species investigated completed their life cycles. During five years, only 5-18% of genets attained virginile phase. Disturbances in herb layer structure enhance chances of individuals to complete life cycle – in disturbed sites, from 0.4% to 57% of genets approached generative phase.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to investigate the level of posttraumatic growth of cancer patients post-treatment in the context of selected sociodemographic characteristics, clinical markers, and psychological variables (positive and negative emotions, anxiety and depressive symptoms, gratitude, forgiveness, hope, importance of the spiritual aspect of life and the practice of religious faith). The study sample consisted of 110 patients post-treatment aged 22-79 years and with an average time since the completion of the last treatment ranging from 5 to 396 months. The Posttraumatic Growth Inventory, the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule, screening methods to measure anxiety (General Anxiety Dis- order-7) and depression (Patient Health Questionnaire-9), and questionnaires to measure dispositional gratitude (Gratitude Questionnaire GQ-6), dispositional hope (Adult Dispositional Hope Scale), and forgiveness (Heartland Forgiveness Scale) were used to measure the psychological variables. There were no differences in the level of posttraumatic growth in terms of sociodemographic characteristics and clinical markers. Partner status, employment status, presence of recurrence, and comorbidities did not differentiate its level either. The rate of posttraumatic growth was related to the experience of positive emotions, gratitude, the importance of the spiritual aspect of life, and the practice of religious faith. In the regression model that explained 21.90% of the variance in posttraumatic growth, only the level of positive emotions was a significant predictor. The results of the present research point suggest that the level of posttraumatic growth is associated with several areas of emotional experience and cognitive adjustment of cancer patients post-treatment.

The life-history traits influencing reproduction success and the recruitment of seedlings of Dianthus superbus L. in different stages of meadow overgrowing
Autorzy:
Kostrakiewicz-Gierałt, Kinga
Opis:
A study of the life-history traits and seedling recruitment in small and isolated populations of a rare clonal species, Dianthus superbus L., was carried out in the years 2011–2012 in Kraków-Kostrze (Southern Poland). Observations were conducted in unmanaged Molinietum caeruleae meadows situated along the successional gradient. The patch representing the initial stage of succession (P1) was dominated by small species creating delicate erect or procumbent stems, the patch representing the temporary stage of succession (P2) was prevailed by large-tussock grasses and tall-growing macroforbs, while the patch representing the terminal stage of succession (P3) was partly overgrown by bushes and trees. The number of generative shoots, flowers, fruits and seeds of Dianthus superbus L. diminished gradually from P3 via P2 to P1. The increase in abundance of generative shoots and flower number in the vicinity of tall plants contributes to increased visibility of inflorescences and may enhance the chances for nocturnal pollinator visits. A significant production of fruits and seeds in competitive neighborhood may augment the chances for successful dispersal and colonization of new, perhaps more favorable habitats. The recruitment of seedlings occurred only in artificially created gaps in plant canopy and litter. The appearance of seedlings and their survivorship were better in P1 than in P2 and P3. Such a phenomenon might be due to the locally rising water level and the diminishing amount of light reaching to the soil area along the successional gradient. Concluding, it should be asserted that a low production of generative shoots, flowers, fruits and seeds by the population of Dianthus superbus L. established in the patch dominated by small meadow species is compensated by the highest seedling recruitment and their survival. On the other hand, a substantial production of generative structures is not sufficient to ensure the persistence of populations in meadows in advanced stages of secondary succession.

The results are discussed of studies dealing with (1) changes in psammophyte vegetation in the oourse of inland dune overgrowing, and (2) population characteristics of selected plant species, and their response to the phytocenotic and biotope conditions in the habitat (Symonides 1979a, 1979b, 1979c). The studies have shown that the formation and succession of communities result from a complex but not chaotic interplay of environmental, population and biocenotic factors. Used for studies of the succession of phytocenoses, the population analysis method makes it possible to get an insight into the nature of the phytocenotic systems, and into the mechanisms determining the structure and dynamics of vegetation.
