Opis:: The present paper focuses on instances of irregular, non-root accentuation placed on words of Germanic origin in Middle English iambic verse. A proposed explanation for the phenomenon is the continued special metrical status of heavy syllables from Old to Middle English and the retained potential of such syllables for attracting poetic accent. The analysis also takes into account additional factors, including possible external influences and morphological considerations. The text samples are selected basing on the date of their provenance and metrical regularity. In order to reduce the possibility of the results being affected by any loose applications of metre, the analysis is confined to the metrically strongest positions within each type of verse.

Opis:: The objective of the paper is to use the model of Complexity Scales and Licensing (Cyran 2003, 2010) to account for the existence of two prosodic types: ‘syllable’ and ‘word’ languages (Auer 1993, Szczepaniak 2007), which roughly correspond to syllable-timed and stress-timed languages. We will postulate that these categories are not primitive and that many of their phonological characteristics can be derived from simpler mechanisms of licensing. It will be also argued that the phenomenon of contrast plays an important role in prosodic typology and may influence syllable structure. Languages use more marked syllabic confi gurations in order to optimise contrast expression. We will carry out an analysis on a simple hypothetical language in order to demonstrate the interdependence of syllabic complexity and the contrastive potential of a syllabic unit.

Opis:: This article deals with the concept of the pedification model. It is compared to the current notification of accent levels in the German Pronunciation Database (DAD). First, the basic terms such as phonological syllable, foot and phonological word are explained and embedded in the context of the previous codification work. The relevance for German as a stress timed language is then outlined. The pedification model is exemplified using some lemmas. Finally, the possible application of this model in the research work on the DAD is discussed.

Opis:: Three approaches to the etymology of Slavic * - are developed under two complementary assumptions about the age of the forms reconstructed with short second syllable. These three approaches are tested to determine which best yields the spread of attested accentual and other forms listed in representative sources. Derivations containing the PIE neuter deictic *hed as first component are found to be the most fruitful if it is assumed that anlaut laryngeals remained in Slavic until the completion of both Winter’s law and the subsequent loss by dissimilation of one or more laryngeal reflexes, including the laryngeal component of PIE *d, in this compound word, all these reflexes having merged by this time in some kind of glottal constriction. Comments are also offered on the etymologies of Slavic * (ъ)và and Lith. võs.

Opis:: Syllabic patterns in South-Eastern EuropeWhereas in most of the world’s languages syllable patterns are built according to the principles of sonority theory (they have the one-peak syllable pattern), in some Balkan languages, there occur deviations from the one-peak syllable pattern of a systemic nature. Such deviations occur also in the northern Slavic languages. They mainly concern the distribution of nasal consonants and appear either in the onset (Albanian) or coda (Romanian). At the very south of Europe the open syllable pattern occurs. Struktury sylabiczne południowo-wschodniej EuropyPodczas gdy zdecydowana większość języków świata preferuje tzw. sonorycznościowy (jednoszczytowy) model sylaby, to południowo-wschodnia Europa jest pod tym względem dość zróżnicowana. Odstępstwa od zasady jednoszczytowości występują w językach północnosłowiańskich. Na Bałkanach natomiast odstępstwa takie dotyczą głównie dystrybucji sonantów nosowych i występują albo w nagłosie, albo w wygłosie. Samo południe Europy (dialekty występujące na południowych częściach półwyspów Morza Śródziemnego) ma natomiast niesymetryczny model sylaby – w wygłosie wyrazów występują głównie sylaby otwarte.

Opis:: Primary word-stress in Germanic languages is generally defined as root-initial. This placement is considered decisive in the metrical shape of native poetic creations, with a tendency for placing prominence where linguistically plausible. However, notable exceptions can be traced in Middle English poetry, with ictus in certain native words falling on a derivative suffix or the second element of an obscure compound rather than the root. The present paper discusses possible reasons for the divergences on the basis of a sample of major poetic works. Focus is placed on the diachronic development from Old to Middle English. Firstly, a discussion from the point of view of linguistic prosody is included, with attention devoted to the possibility of non-weak stress in Old English falling on all heavy, bimoraic syllables. Secondly, semantic aspects are analysed, with focus on the possible impact of incomplete grammaticalization of certain morphemes. Finally, French influences are noted.

Opis:: The article deals with the issues of Ukrainian syllables and syllabification in terms of phonetics and phonology. The study is based on the analysis of various scientific views on the above problems. As a result a phonological interpretation of syllables and syllabification in Ukrainian is proposed. The main conclusion is that a syllable exists as a phonetic syllable and a phonological syllable, and each one has its own rules of formation and, consequently, syllabification in words.

Opis:: This paper presents the results of a preliminary investigation of subjective feelings related to the syllabification of Polish words written in orthographic form. The results are part of a wider study, and the data presented here are limited to polysegmental word-internal consonant clusters. In the author’s previous articles it was noted that some morphological boundaries are perceived as syllable boundaries – particularly boundaries between a prefix and a stem. The words that contain such boundaries were excluded from the investigation. The main goal was to verify whether the phonostatistical properties of consonant clusters influence subjective feelings related to syllabification. The investigated statistical proprieties concern the frequency of occurrence of consonant clusters, and of parts of them at the beginning of words, in the text corpus. Another goal was to verify whether the syllabification based on phonology differs from that based on subjective feelings.

Opis:: The purpose of this article is to outline Portuguese syllable structure. The shape of the syllable in European Portuguese (the standard southern and central dialect) is suggested to be identical in slow and fast speech (Mateus – d’Andrade 2002). This view is challenged in this article by an analysis of Vowel Deletion and Vowel Nasalisation. It is argued that within the skeletal theory of the syllable, it is impossible to maintain the same syllabic structure for slow speech and fast speech.

Opis:: This paper looks into the structural properties of both Romanian and Japanese truncated names. Name truncation is considered to be a word-formation process and is analyzed from the perspective of Prosodic Morphology (McCarthy & Prince 1995, 1998; Booij 2005; Downing 2006). A contrastive analysis of the morphological and phonological structure of truncated names in both Romanian and Japanese shows that they are subject to strict prosodic requirements. Thus, linguistically significant generalizations and constraints on the makeup of truncated names can only be formulated in terms of moras, syllables and feet. Also discussed is the relation between name truncation and prosodic minimality in the two languages.
