Opis:: A strong nostalgia for “the good old days” is a cultural phenomenon underway throughout the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. The filter of nostalgia “tames” communism, though it does not negate its absurdities and inconveniences. Only in exceptional cases does nostalgia mean a genuine desire to restore the past. Nonetheless, the very fact of a swelling nostalgia for communist times is symptomatic and indicates that despite strong public support for the narratives of the transformation in the post-communist countries, there are also narratives created in a bottom-up manner and managed by small and often private museum institutions. The musealization of post-communist nostalgia is a widespread process, but it differs in the various countries of the region. This article will analyze examples of nostalgic museum exhibitions in Poland and the former East Germany. Based on the study of these cases, the author attempts to describe the importance of such exhibitions for the public.

Opis:: According to Ernst Cassirer’s views expressed in Philosophy of Symbolic Forms and Essay on Man a man is ‘a symbolic animal’, which means that: /1/ every meaning is symbolic, /2/ symbolisation creates the world but it does not reflect it, /3/ symbolisations are not individual but cultural, /4/ culture consists of ‘symbolic forms’, i.e., science, common sense, religion, magic, language and art, which create the world in different ways. Nelson Goodman in Languages of Art and Ways of Worldmaking developed Cassirer’s view towards more radical epistemological pluralism and changed his semiotic assumption. Cassirer accepted Frege’s understanding of symbolisation as a relation between three elements: a symbol, its meaning and a denoted object. For Goodman symbolisation is a two-element relation: between a symbol and an object, without the category of meaning. Symbols can denote or exemplify or refer to objects in complex and indirect ways. The paper aims to address the problem of the efficiency of that categorisation.

Poziom opowieści Beniamina można interpretować przy użyciu teorii narracyjnej tożsamości McAdamsa, które to narzędzie pomaga dostrzec, jak w powieści Żmichowskiej zaciera się granica między fikcyjnym a biograficznym. Dla takiej analizy istotny jest fakt obecności słuchaczy. To właśnie ich rozmowa o miłości wyzwala w protagoniście opowieść. Ich komentarze kierują poszukiwania Beniamina, a na poziomie stylistycznym Żmichowska tworzy z nich narracyjny wielogłos. Jednak te wypowiedzi innych, wplecione w narrację protagonisty, stają się bezosobowe. Kominkowy dialog, który stanowił klamrę kompozycyjną Poganki przekształca się w powieść jednego bohatera. Beniamin, tworząc swoją tożsamość z echa dawnych spotkań i rozmów, dysocjuje się od towarzystwa, stając się nie tylko na-dawcą, ale i głównym słuchaczem swojej historii. Skupiony na ujawnianiu siebie bohater traci kontakt z pozostałymi płaszczyznami komunikacji wg von Thuna, szczególnie zaś z tymi nastawionymi na tworzenie relacji. Tym samym powieść Żmichowskiej rozpoczyna dyskusję na temat narracji, jej zdolności do dysocjowania opowiadającego i kompetencji tożsamościotwórczej. Pozwala przyjrzeć się zamkniętemu w świecie wspomnienia narratorowi, gdzie zastępuje relacje bezpieczniejszymi do interpretacji symbolami.
I treat The Heathen, Zmichowska's frame novel, as a representation of the process of telling a life story. I interpret Benjamin's story using McAdams' narrative identity theory, a tool that helps me to see how the boundary between the fictional and the biographical is blurred in Zmichowska's novel. What is important for my analysis is the audience's presence. It is their conversation about love that triggers the protagonist's story. Their comments guide Benjamin's quest, and on a stylistic level, Żmichowska creates a narrative polyphony out of them. However, these statements by others, woven into the protagonist's narrative, become impersonal. The ‘chimney dialogue’ part that constituted the framing device of The Heathen is transformed into a single character novel. Creating his identity from the echoes of past encounters and conversations, Benjamin dissociates himself from his company, becoming not only the author but also the main listener of his story. Focused on revealing himself, the protagonist loses contact with the other planes of communication according to von Thun, especially those geared towards creating relationships. Thus, Żmichowska's novel opens a discussion on narration, its ability to dissociate the storyteller and its identity-forming competence. It allows us to look at the narrator, who is locked in a world of memories, where he replaces relationships with symbols that are safer to interpret.

The text proposes a revision of the traditional paradigm of the use of the concept of hallucinations in the context of research on shamanism in traditional societies and in relation to the possible shape of paleo-religion. Based on research on subliminal perception and the synesthetic and symbolic transformation of its content into the form of dream content and hallucinations, the problematic nature of perceiving the latter as erroneous perceptions has been indicated. The information given in the subliminal channel - as such unconscious - can be made aware through techniques of lucid dreaming or intentional entering into hallucinatory experiences of various provenance. The author points to the need for additional research from this new and theoretically interesting perspective.
