Transfer of tacit knowledge : exploring effective methods and techniques of tacit knowledge across generations in cultural institutions : a case study
Autorzy:
Rosiński, Jerzy
Tokarz, Małgorzata
Opis:
Purpose: The objective of this paper is to synthesize literature on knowledge management, to investigate the effectiveness of traditional and contemporary knowledge transfer methods, and to conduct a comparative analysis of their advantages and disadvantages. Additionally, the paper will examine challenges associated with the transfer of tacit knowledge, using cultural institutions as a case study, such as linguistic barriers and generational gaps, and will propose strategies for improving the transfer of tacit knowledge. In this way, this article aims to contribute to the understanding of effective methods and techniques for transferring tacit knowledge across generations, while simultaneously highlighting its role in shaping organizational practices and strategies. Data for the article were collected through an analysis of the available literature, with reference to methods applied in a cultural institution context. Design/methodology/approach: A comparison of knowledge transfer methods in a cultural institution was conducted using a structured interview. The literature analysis confirms the direction of the methods used in the institution. Fingings: As a result of the literature analysis and the practical application of various methods of knowledge transfer, considering generational differences, the thesis was confirmed that young employees do not want to be instructed but prefer to explore the experiences of older colleagues and learn from them for the future. This provided ample room for the development of intergenerational knowledge transfer tools based on mutual trust, inspiration, stimulation, and long-term cooperation between young and older employees, particularly through mentoring.

Opis:
Abstract. Purpose – this article aims to examine how teamwork cooperation mediates the relationship between interpersonal trust and tacit knowledge transfer. Research methodology – the paper uses data obtained from a survey conducted on 175 employees from the telecommunications sector. The multiplied regression method was applied to analyse the data according to the mediation analysis. Findings – the findings show that interpersonal trust predicts tacit knowledge transfer and team cooperation mediates this relationship. The results indicate the importance of nurturing positive, trusting relations among employees in organisations and the necessity of working interactions. Research limitations – the limitation of this research is related to the relatively small research sample. Further research could be conducted on a higher number of respondents and could cover different sectors. Additional development of presented research might include cross-cultural analysis. Originality/Value – this paper contributes to the literature of management by providing the empirical confirmation of the SET-based model that concerns the mechanism of tacit knowledge transfer. The practical implications highlight the importance of common collaborative experience and interpersonal trust that facilitates trust among co-workers and consequently influences tacit knowledge transfer

The body in the library : an investigative celebration of deviation, hesitation, and lack of closure
Autorzy:
Kociatkiewicz, Jerzy

Opis:
The unexpected, if still clichéd, discovery of a body in the library introduces Agatha Christie’s plot starring the genius amateur detective, elderly Miss Marple. We will use the same situation as the starting point of our article and investigation, promising both the unmasking of the culprit and the departure from the currently standard form of an academic text. In a self-consciously rambling and digressive text, we will touch on various issues relevant to writing what we consider good social science, and the difficulties in doing so. Firmly reaffirming the need for writing organization studies and social science in the narrative mode, we trace what we see as the decline in quality and joyousness of contemporary management journal articles, and attempt to demonstrate, both through narrative means and by more traditional academic reasoning, how and why it is important to embrace variety in the ways knowledge in the social sciences is constructed and communicated.

Opis:
The paper focuses on the internal knowledge sharing, namely on the methods and practices used in the case of tacit knowledge exchange among the individuals within an enterprise. Therefore, the first aim of the paper is to present the methods and practices that are recommended by knowledge management’s experts in the process of tacit knowledge sharing. The second research purpose is to determine which of those methods and practices are most frequently used by surveyed enterprises and how employees evaluate their utility in tacit knowledge sharing. In order to achieve the second purpose of the research, a survey was carried out in 153 enterprises located in the region of Wielkopolska in Poland, operating on domestic and foreign market. The first section of the work provides a brief summary of guidelines on tacit knowledge sharing within an enterprise highlighted in the relevant literature and a set of methods and practices that are used in tacit knowledge sharing which are recommended by the specialists in the field of knowledge management. Then the paper presents the results of own study on the surveyed group of enterprises. In the concluding remarks possible implications for the development of tacit knowledge sharing are suggested. The research results allow the conclusion that according to what is reported in the literature, tacit knowledge sharing is associated with broad defined staff training system. So exchange of tacit knowledge mainly takes two forms in surveyed enterprises: collective learning and transmission of accumulated previously knowledge to other employees within a company. However, as the research results suggest, the degree of using methods and practices for tacit knowledge sharing could be higher. Rather small level of tacit knowledge sharing in surveyed enterprises may be caused by insufficient activities focused on developing a strong organizational culture based on trust and cooperation.

Opis:
The aim of this article, based on the literature review, is to explore the senses within the context of knowledge. The article begins with a description of embodied (i.e., also sensory) knowledge’s marginalisation within the social sciences and the reasons for this. After indicating the most popular fields of research, the article explores three main understandings of sensory knowledge: (1) senses as a source of knowledge, (2) senses as acquired skills and (3) sensory knowledge as a result of (collective) activity. In the next part, sensory knowledge is discussed as tacit knowledge, taking into account the problem of its verbalisation and the nature of its acquisition. The last part explores the social construction of sensory knowledge and its relation to subjective experiences, referring to the concepts of intersubjectivity, objectification and legitimisation.

Opis:
The literature review presents a lot of theoretical and empirical evidence that trust affects collaborative culture. The opposite also proves to be true: collaborative culture influences trust. The main hypothesis presented in this paper says that both these factors are strongly correlated and modify each other. This study examines the mutual relationship of the said variables in the context of tacit knowledge sharing based on research conducted among 514 Polish professionals performing different functions, and having various experience in managing projects, in the construction industry. The results obtained in the course of the study indicate that there is not only a strong correlation between trust and collaborative culture but both of them have a strong influence on tacit knowledge sharing. The main managerial implication of the study is the importance of stimulating the growth of both collaborative culture and trust. receiving a strong synergy effect will make it possible to leverage tacit knowledge sharing as an agent contributing to a company’s performance.

Opis:
Since its first introduction into the field of philosophy by Michael Polanyi, the problem of tacit knowledge has undergone a transformation. Nowadays the question is not so much whether the rules and assumptions governing theory choice are amenable to articulation and critical assessment, as it is if the methods of multi- and interdisciplinary research can be laid down and improved upon. The article addresses the problem of tacit knowledge in general, and the above-mentioned issue in particular, from the vantage point of cognitive neurosciences. More specifically, it considers the question of the possibility of coordination and management of corporate scientific activity in the light of the so called sensorimotor conception of learning and cognition. The paper is thought of as providing an example of the employment of neuroscientific conceptual framework in the domain of philosophy of science and epistemology.

Opis:
The success of tacit knowledge management lies in firms’ capabilities to attract and retain employees possessing unique knowledge. The purpose of the paper is to investigate students’ attitudes towards career in tourism in the context of tacit knowledge management. The study was conducted on the group of 345 undergraduates and graduates enrolled in tourism and hospitality studies in Poznan. Research revealed that majority of students plan short-term career in tourism, which entails tacit knowledge leakage outside the tourism industry. It was also found that students’ attitudes towards tourism careers are significantly influenced by previous work experience and satisfaction with the studies.
