Opis:
In order to reduce ventilation heat loss and improve energy efficiency of low-energy buildings air-handling units (AHUs) with heat recovery are used. The article presents results of surveys performed in a passive building located in Katowice concerning the temperature efficiency of heat and cold recovery of two selected AHUs, with different heat exchangers. For this purpose the measurement data from the Building Management System (BMS) for the period 1.08.2015-31.07.2016 were used. The first unit was equipped with a rotary heat exchanger. Its average annual temperature efficiency of heat recovery was 47.2% annually. The efficiency of cold recovery amounted 52.9% on average for the warm half year. The second unit had a cross-flow exchanger. The average annual temperature efficiency of heat recovery in this device was 80.1%. The efficiency of cold recovery amounted 57.2% on average for the warm half year. Additional remarks concerning the temperature measurement in analysed units were also given.

Opis:
INTRODUCTION: For firefighters to respond effectively and safely in challenging situations, their protective gear must offer maximum protection, comfort, and ergonomics. While this gear protects against high temperatures, it can pose risks in other scenarios. Specialised attire safeguards against fires but can be perilous in localised threats, potentially life-threatening. This is associated with increased internal body temperature, causing rapid breathing, elevated heart rate, increased blood flow and pressure, substantial sweating, and loss of essential elements. The study aimed to compare physical stress levels at high and low ambient temperatures and examine the variations in measured parameters. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study assesses how working in high temperature conditions wearing firefighter gear affects physical and psychological abilities and recovery between tasks. It evaluates participants' well-being before and after the study, years of service, protective gear comfort, fluid intake, alternatives to standard gear, and recovery time. It uses questionnaires and measurements of vital signs (body temperature, weight, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, heart rate) before and after physical exertion. RESULTS: A total of 152 participants participated in this study, with 30 during the winter season and 122 in the summer. The human body releases heat through convection, conduction, radiation, and evaporation. Maintaining normothermia is challenging at high temperatures. In summer, participants' weight increased due to sweating. After exertion, blood pressure diverged significantly, with the summer group showing a notable increase in systolic pressure, which stressed the need for hydration. Blood oxygen levels increased during exertion but normalised after rest. Pulse rates were similar at rest but significantly increased in the summer group after exertion, highlighting the importance of caution and hydration at high temperatures. CONCLUSIONS: Analysis of collected data, including medical assessments and surveys, clearly demonstrates the significant impact of working in high temperature conditions on the vital parameters of the participants. Prolonged heat exposure, primarily due to the insulating properties of specialised gear and resulting thermal discomfort, accelerates fatigue and exhaustion. This, in turn, leads to increased errors, slower responses, and potential health problems. To address this concern, the introduction of lighter uniform options, adjustments to legal regulations, and the inclusion of overheating risks in medical protocols should be considered as preventive measures.

Opis:
Exergy analysis is a powerful thermodynamic tool and it helps in computing the actual output of a system. It helps the researchers to optimize the roughened solar air heater design to compensate the present and also the future needs. In this study, investigation on exergetic performance evaluation of a solar air heater with W-shaped roughened absorber surface analytically by employing mathematical model and the results obtained are compared with smooth plate solar air heater under same operating conditions. The exergetic efficiency curves has been plotted as a function of different values of Reynolds number and temperature rise parameter for different roughness parameters. The maximum augmentation in the exergetic efficiency of the solar air heater with W-shaped roughened surface as compared to solar air heater with smooth surface has been obtained as 51% corresponding to the relative roughness height of 0.03375 and the rib angle of attack about 60°. Based on the exergetic efficiency the suitable design parameters of solar air heater with W-shaped roughened are determined.

Opis:
The electrical performance and the productivity of PV module depend on two main parameters, i.e. the radiation intensity and the cell operating temperature. The module electrical efficiency and productivity are significantly reduced as its temperature increases. Accordingly, cooling of PV modules is one of the most effective techniques to obtain higher efficiency and productivity as well as to reduce the degradation modes of PV modules due to high temperatures. This research work presents an experimental study carried out to investigate the effect of PV module cooling on the performance of PV module under Irbid city (Jordan) climate conditions. It was found that the electrical efficiency and the productivity of the PV modules were approximately enhanced by 14%. Therefore, water cooling of the PV modules is essential to enhance their performance.

Temperature-driven trade-off between mitochondrial activity and efficiency in live rotifers representing different thermal histories

Opis:
Mitochondria generate up to 90% of cellular ATP, making it critical to understand how abiotic factors affect mitochondrial function under varying conditions. Using clones of the rotifer Lecane inermis with known thermal preferences, we investigated mitochondrial bioenergetic responses to four thermal regimes: standard temperature, optimal temperature, low suboptimal temperature and high suboptimal temperature. The study aimed to determine how mitochondrial parameters in intact organisms vary with temperature shifts and whether these responses differ across experimental populations. We assessed key bioenergetic parameters: routine respiration (representing overall metabolic rate), electron transport system capacity (indicative of oxidative phosphorylation potential) and proton leak rates (reflecting the energetic costs of maintaining mitochondrial membrane potential). Our results showed that populations with different thermal preferences displayed distinct mitochondrial responses to temperature changes, particularly at suboptimal temperatures. In contrast, responses were more uniform under standard and optimal conditions. Our findings demonstrated that metabolic plasticity in changing environments often involves trade-offs between mitochondrial efficiency and maintenance. By studying mitochondrial respiration at the whole-organism level, we revealed the complex temperature dependence of bioenergetic traits, providing insights beyond isolated mitochondria studies. This research highlights how a cascade of plastic responses spanning from mitochondrial responses to overall growth patterns is triggered by temperature changes, offering a valuable perspective in the context of global warming and organismal adaptation.

Opis:
The factor of thermal efficiency, used for the assessement of the use of heat in the diesel engine working cycles, has been based on the the first law of thermodynamics only. This paper indicates the fact that to achieve more comprehensive thermodynamic analyses it is necessary to use factors based on the two laws of thermodynamics. One such factor herein proposed is the exoergic efficiency. The method for the determination of this factor for the main engine is presented. Original relations involving the exoergic efficiency are set out. The factor depends on the ambient temperature.
