Opis:: Internationalisms as a source of equonymy in Slavic technical terminology (on the basis of Polish, Russian and Bulgarian material)The article presents one of the main sources of Slavic synonymy in technical terms – the phenomenon of internationalization. On the basis of a comprehensive set of Polish, Russian and Bulgarian terms of the range of machinery (construction and operation) it was found that Polish terminology uses international units primarily as a component of analytic terms, while the Russian and Bulgarian usually borrow the entire terminological unit and less often use a parallel native term. Internacjonalizmy jako źródło ekwonimii w słowiańskiej terminologii technicznej (na materiale polskim, rosyjskim i bułgarskim)W artykule przedstawiono jedno z głównych źródeł ekwonimii w słowiańskiej terminologii technicznej – zjawisko internacjonalizacji. Na podstawie analizy obszernego zbioru polskich, rosyjskich i bułgarskich terminów z zakresu budowy i eksploatacji maszyn ustalono, że polska terminologia używa jednostek międzynarodowych przede wszystkim jako części składowej terminów analitycznych, zaś rosyjski i bułgarski systemy terminologiczne zapożyczają zazwyczaj całą jednostkę terminologiczną i rzadziej używają równolegle terminu rodzimego.

Opis:: Przedmiotem artykułu jest omówienie problemu ekwiwalencji terminologii specjalistycznej przy tłumaczeniu tekstu naukowego z jednego języka naturalnego na drugi. Za przykład służy terminologia geografii fizycznej używana w językach węgierskim i polskim. Artykuł udowadnia, że język nauki, choć jest językiem uniwersalnym, nie zawsze da się wyrazić w dowolnym języku naturalnym.
The article discusses equivalence of specialized terminology in the translation of scientific texts from one natural language to another on the basis of terms in physical geography in Hungarian and Polish languages. The article proves that the language of science – though it’s universal – not always can be expressed in any natural language.

Opis:: The present paper is an attempt to discuss the issue of terminology management as a part of the translator or LSP training process as well as methods for its implementation in the MA programme “Linguistics in Specialised Communication”. The paper outlines the curricular approach to the teaching of terminology management through the delivery of a theoretical and a practical module. The latter includes three elements: conventional terminology work, terminology management and the integration of term bases prepared or made available in the process of translation with the aid of the TMS and CAT tools. The practical work was based on small and medium-sized terminology projects carried out by university students.

Opis:: The paper demonstrates attributes of an ideal term on the grounds of nineteenth century Polish medical terminology (names of disorders) from a Dictionary of Polish Medical Terminology by S. Janikowski, J. Oettinger and A. Kremer (Kraków 1881). In the first part of this dictionary, approximately 20 thousand foreign language entries are gathered (Latin, German, French, English) together with their Polish equivalents – from one to several records. The sequence of Polish terms assigned to the entries is not random: from the most to the less recommended. It means that the best terms (I call them ideal terms) come first in the synonymic line. And they are (totally 940) the subject of analysis in this paper. It results from the analysis that ideal terms are mostly: 1) native (98.4%); 2) of simple structure (comprising two elements at most – 89.3%); 3) syntactical derivatives (55.1%); 4) of non-specified origin; 5) sometimes having many meanings (12.2%); 6) relatively long-lasting, that means they generally last in the scientific terminology (74.9%) and - a little bit more rarely (more than 58%) – they keep their position of the ideal term; 7) compared to other terms in a synonymic line, in terms of the structure - frequently (65.5%) identical, that is comprising the same number of elements; 8) most frequently (41.7%) of common root – compared to other terms (all of them or just some of them) in a synonymic line.

Opis:: The necessity to standardize terminology has recently become obvious. Positive aspects of applying standardized terms are emphasized not only by academic communities but also by business since it results in more effective communication and finally in life improvement in many aspects (e.g. free trade, free flow of goods and services). The main purpose of this paper is, however, not to highlight the advantages of terminology standardization per se but to answer the relevant scientific question related to it, namely, whether it is possible to estimate the standardization degree of a single term, and if so, what are the reference points of such an evaluation.

Opis:: The article analyzes the way terminology connected to the field of railway transport function in the Ukrainian language. The research material consists of examples of names separated from the cross-section of the M62 diesel locomotive. The analysis of the collected lexical material was carried out following the key of loanwords. The study shows that based on the Ukrainian language, the terms in the field of rail transport come mainly from ancient languages (Latin, Greek – 43% of collected research material). To a lesser extent, from English, French, German and Dutch. Moreover, the importance of the Russian language was pointed out, which should be considered the last link in the discussed process. In many cases, the appearance of the so-called “traveling loanwords” was observed.

Opis:: In our current information society, terminology is developing very fast in every field across the globe and large multilingual and multinational organisations increasingly require specialists in terminology and specialised translation. Our survey falls within the field of research on specialised translation teaching and, particularly, the training of translators in the field of terminology at an academic level. Our starting point was the statement that the search for the right terms and other tasks related to terminology represent a significant part of the tasks of every translator and that terminology is one of the skills of a translator. In this paper, we compare the place given to terminology in translator training at the university in Greece and in Poland, both in foreign philology and translation training programmes. After providing some general information on the terminological work performed by translators and on the skills required in this field, we compare and comment the results of our analysis of the terminology courses offered to philology and translation students in Greek and Polish universities. In the last part of the paper, we examine the place of terminology in both countries and the forms of its institutionalisation at the national level, which can either encourage or jeopardize the process of teaching terminology.

Opis:: When it comes to terminology, the Dutch-speaking regions have a long tradition of collaboration. Since the eighties there have been several partnerships and committees, all lead by the Dutch Language Union. There was a growing awareness that a central point was needed to bring together all information concerning Dutch terminology and to make it generally accessible. Since 2016, the Dutch Language Institute (INT) in Leiden manages and develops all Dutch language materials. The whole spectrum of language, including professional language, regional languages and dialects, is now given attention, making it no more than logical for the INT to accommodate the Centre of Expertise for Dutch Terminology (ENT). The main task of the ENT is to offer information, facilities, products and services in the field of terminology. Apart from that, research is done into the professional language of three specific fields: legal language, medical language and the language of higher education. In this article I will go deeper into the wide range of information supplied by the ENT, including specific software tools for terminological tasks. I will also describe several of the terminology projects that are being conducted at the Dutch Language Institute.

Opis:: The paper is based on an analysis of names of aviation vehicles included in the Wojskowy słowniczek lotniczy polsko-francusko-niemiecko-rosyjski (Military Polish–French–German–Russian aviation glossary), published in 1922. The lexemes are examined in terms of the origin (whether they are loan-words or of Polish origin) and their structure in order to determine the rules underlying this linguistic process. Extralinguistic factors and events are also taken into consideration in the analysis, e.g. the development of Polish aviation, the social tendencies in the 1920s, conditions of military service.

Opis:: Many misunderstandings about what terminology does and what its cognitive tasks are, are a consequence of insufficiently precise treatment of the terms “term” and “terminology”, and, consequently, incorrectly delineating the subject of study and cognitive tasks of terminology. The purpose of the considerations presented here is to try to organize these issues based on the main assumptions of anthropocentric linguistics (see F. Grucza 2012, S. Grucza 2013a, 2013b, 2017). In the first part of the paper a proposal to clarify the meaning of the term “term” will be presented, i.e. an attempt to answer the question about the ontological status of referred by the term “term”. In the second part a proposal to clarify the meaning of the term “terminology” will be given, and in the third part a proposal of general description of the subject of the study and in the fourth part proposal of s description of cognitive tasks of terminology.
