Opis:: The article’ aim is to show contemporary Polish translations of films’ and television series’ titles. It presents the differences between the original version and the Polish translation. The research was based on the titles of films produced in 2000 and later to show how contemporary films’ and series’ titles could be translate. After the analysis it is concluded that it is not possible to discuss contemporary tendencies in the translation of titles, because the translation depends mainly on the translator’s decision. He decides what elements of the original title are most important for him, sets the purpose of the translation, the compositional dominant and translates the title from one language into another. Translation is always presented in the series and is only one of many possible interpretations, and that’s why the translation criticism and the search for new solutions are an inherent part of the process.

Opis:: Tłumaczenie tytułu danego utworu jest bardzo interesujące, ponieważ jest to nie tylko zwieńczenie procesu tłumaczenia całego utworu, ale także wprowadzenie do niego, które ma zachęcić publiczność do zapoznania się z nim. W pracy dyplomowej postanowiłam podjąć temat tłumaczenia nie tylko tytułów kolejnych wydań książek, ale także ich adaptacji filmowych, ponieważ chciałam sprawdzić, czy jeden tytuł może być prezentowany w kilku formach. Temat ten od dawna wydawał mi się interesujący, szczególnie w celu sprawdzenia, czy istnieją jakieś mechanizmy regulujące tytuły tłumaczeń książek i czy różnią się one od zasad rządzących przekładem tytułów filmowych. Moja praca dyplomowa skupia się na analizie wybranych tytułów z powieści i opowiadań Stephena Kinga oraz dwóch klasycznych powieści, jednej Jane Austen i drugiej Emily Brontë.Pierwszy rozdział opisuje w skrócie historię tytułu. Kolejne podrozdziały poświęcone są współpracy pomiędzy tłumaczem i redaktorem, klientem oraz ilustratorem. Na końcu tego rozdziału przedstawiono (komercyjną) rolę publiczności w tworzeniu tytułu. W drugim rozdziale części teoretycznej określone i opisane są poszczególne strategie i problemy tłumaczeniowe. Rozdział trzeci dotyczy części praktycznej, w której badane są poszczególne tytuły powieści Stephena Kinga, Jane Austen i Emily Bronte.Wnioski z pracy dyplomowej dowodzą, że tłumacze starają się oddać większość dosłownego tytułu powieści, ale gramatyczna struktura oryginału nie zawsze na to pozwala. Ponadto starają się również uwzględnić kontekst kulturowy dzieła literackiego, interpretując tytuł w kontekście całego tekstu. W badanych przykładach nie tylko obce słownictwo, ale także obce struktury gramatyczne stanowią wyzwanie. Klasyka to przykłady tytułów, które mogą funkcjonować jako takie charakterystyczne pojęcia, że każda próba ich zmiany może być wysoce niepożądana dla odbiorców. Przetłumaczone tytuły ich adaptacji filmowych odpowiadają przetłumaczonym tytułom wcześniej opublikowanych powieści, sugerując, że dystrybutorzy filmowi zamierzają łączyć filmy ze znanymi już książkami.
Translating the title of a particular work is highly interesting due to the fact that it is not only the denouement of the process of translating the entire work, but also an introduction to it, which is supposed to encourage the audience to get acquainted with it. In my diploma thesis I decided to discuss the subject of translating not only the titles of subsequent editions of books, but also their film adaptations, because I wanted to examine whether one title can be presented in several forms. This topic has long seemed interesting to me, especially in order to verify whether there exist any mechanisms in place to regulate the titles of book translations and whether they differ from the rules governing the translation of film titles. My thesis focuses on the analysis of selected titles from Stephen King's novels and short stories as well as two classic novels, one by Jane Austen and the other by Emily Brontë.The first chapter describes shortly the history of the title. The next subchapters are devoted to the cooperation between a translator and an editor, a customer as well as an illustrator. In the end of this chapter there is shown the (commercial) role of the audience in creation of the title. In the second chapter of theoretical part particular translations strategies and translation problems are specified and described. The third chapter relates to practical part in which particular titles of Stephen King's, Jane Austen's and Emily Bronte's novels are examined.The conclusions at the end of the diploma thesis prove that translators try to render most of the literal title of the novel, but the grammatical structure of the original does not always allow it. Moreover, they also try to take into account the cultural context of the literary work by interpreting the title in the context of the whole text. In the examined examples, not only foreign vocabulary, but also foreign grammatical structures are challenging. Classics are examples of the titles that can function as such characteristic terms that any attempt to change them can be highly undesirable for the recipients. The translated titles of their film adaptations correspond to the translated titles of previously published novels, suggesting that film distributors intended to combine films with already known books.

Opis:: The article focused on the place of feminized job/activity titles in the modern Ukrainian language, their perception and use. In particular, it contains analysis of lexicographical works which show the gradual increase in the number of such language units during the 20th – early 21st century within Ukrainian. This process has happened against the background of increased educational and professional opportunities for women. During that time feminized job/ activity titles have become so regular in the speech practice of Ukrainians that eventually they were introduced in dictionaries. However, for a long time these language units remained stylistically marked as ‘colloquial’ or ‘vernacular’. Scrolling through social networks shows that even today they are sometimes perceived as mocking or contemptuous words. The results of a poll illustrate that speakers associate them with feminist movements or political factors, but mostly recognize feminized job/activity titles as a manifestation of the synchronization of social and linguistic processes. Today, the main issues regarding feminized job/activity titles in Ukrainian are their further standardization and the possibility of neutralizing any stylistic colouring.

Opis:: During the reign of Sigismund I the Old relations between gentry and clergy were visibly tense. The main source of the conflict was the issue of a state reform suggested by chivalry. Crystalizing in the first half of the XVI century, execution movement program considerably infringed clergy’s legal and economic privileges. The reform program proposed by gentry pertained to several social, religious, economic and legal issues. In all these spheres the Church and chivalry differed in opinions, which resulted in a complicated confrontation and impossibility of working out of consensus. The fact that the compromise could not be reached made both sides act even more vigorously, insisting on fulfillment of all their demands. In the fight against the Senate and Monarchy, members of the Chamber of Deputies were still more and more convinced of their increasing power. Thus, still more boldly and unanimously, they defended rights of chivalry and demanded extension of privileges on expense of clergy and the mighty. However, gentry was able neither to impose permanent taxes on the Church nor devoid clergy of remaining the only authority in deciding on issues concerning the faith. Undoubtedly, due to unhesitant position of the Polish Episcopate and support of Sigismund I the Old, clergy managed to retain their political and economic privileges, although political privileges were considerably undermined during the reign of Sigismund Augustus.

Opis:: The article analyses the structure and functions of seventy-three titles extracted from the first Polish-language popular-science journal, i.e. Nowe Wiadomości Ekonomiczne i Uczone. It was determined that the examined titles included both uninomial and binomial titles (25) as well as multinomial ones (48). Uninomial titles relate only to relatively short texts whose publication fell within a single issue of the journal. Long texts, divided into several parts and published in subsequent issues of the journal, had multinomial titles. The analysed titles (just as in the case of the titles of strictly-scientific modern articles) fulfilled the informative and substantial function. However, they did not perform the pragmatic and persuasive functions typical of the headlines present in modern popular-science press.

Tytuł:: Translation of movie titles: A case of horrors and romantic comedies
Tłumaczenie tytułów filmów: porównanie strategii w horrorach i komediach romantycznych

Opis:: The thesis investigates the strategies used in translating movie titles. Its aim is to check which of those strategies are used while translating titles from English into Polish and what the reasoning behind those choices is. The objective is to see whether translators take into consideration the genre-specific features of a movie when rendering its title or if they do itregardless of the genre. In order to accomplish it, two different genres are compared, namely horrors and romantic comedies. The first chapter of the thesis is theoretical – it talks about the functions of titles in general and distinguishes all the strategies in translating movie titles. In the second chapter, there is an analysis of the translations of horror movie titles and thestrategies used. In the third chapter, there is a similar analysis of the titles of romantic comedies, and the elements which are different in those two genres are emphasized. The last chapter compares the strategies used in translating the titles of horrors and romantic comedies in detail.
Praca bada strategie używane przy tłumaczeniu tytułów filmów. Jej celem jest sprawdzenie, które z tych strategii są używane do tłumaczenia tytułów z angielskiego na polski oraz co stoi za ich wyborem. Praca ma za zadanie sprawdzić, czy tłumacze biorą pod uwagę specyfikę gatunku danego filmu, czy wybór strategii przy tłumaczeniu tytułu nie zależy od gatunku. Wtym celu porównane zostają tłumaczenia z dwóch kompletnie różnych gatunków filmowych, czyli horrorów i komedii romantycznych. Pierwszy rozdział pracy jest poświęcony teorii – mówi on o ogólnych funkcjach tytułów w różnych dziełach, a następnie wyróżnia wszystkie strategie używane do tłumaczenia tytułów filmów. Drugi rozdział to analiza tłumaczeń tytułówhorrorów i strategii tam użytych. Trzeci rozdział to podobna analiza tłumaczeń tytułów komedii romantycznych oraz wstępne porównanie różnic między strategiami w dwóch wyżej wymienionych gatunkach. Ostatni rozdział pracy przedstawia szczegółowe porównanie oraz analizę strategii użytych w tłumaczeniu tytułów horrorów i komedii romantycznych.

Opis:: In the period 1992-2017, dozens of priests with at least a doctoral degree were involved in the scientific work in the entire Ełk clergy. Most of the priests graduating from specialist studies obtained the title of doctor of theology. They represent the following specializations: biblical theology (7 priests), pastoral theology (4), liturgy (3), dogmatic theology (3), catechetics (2), patrology (2). Other areas include canon law (7), history (4), and philosophy (2). There were also three academic periodicals created by Ełk priests, i.e. “Studia Ełckie”, “Civitas et Lex” and “Studia Gilsoniana”. Through their activity, these priests managed to create solid scientific journals, recognizable today not only in Poland, but also abroad.

Opis:: The aristocratic titles, which the partitioning monarchies granted to some of their Polish noble subjects in the long nineteenth century, did not play a decisive role in the development and formation of the modern Polish noble elite. The foreign titles could only sanction the internal noble hierarchy, which was apparently much more determined by specific noble traditions and the cult of the pre-partition past. This argument is evidenced by the cases of families which did not need formal title grants to be recognized as truly aristocratic in that period.
