Opis:: One of the perceptions of the institution relates to such forms of social organisation which are characterised by a clear and specific order, and particularly are intended to subordinate people’s behaviours to special rigours. This method uses the notion of total institution which has been made popular in sociological science by E. Goffman. Totality may be subject to analysis both in the aspect of its intensity and the number of barriers that are used by it.

Tytuł:: People in total institutions : the case of border guard functionaries and employees in guarded centres for foreigners

Opis:: The aim of the article is to identify and analyse guarded centres for foreigners in Poland when considered as total institutions and the psycho-social consequences of such totalization on the officers and employees of the Border Guard who work in these centres. The above-mentioned consequences stem from their daily work in a total institution, primarily within the legal and socio-cultural conditions of the functioning of these centres and, secondly, in terms of the relationships between the staff employed in them, as well as between the staff and foreigners. In addition, they are also an effect of the simultaneous impact of the world outside the total institution on the officers and employees of the Border Guard.

Opis:: This paper is an attempt at an untraditional reading of one of Stefan Żeromski’s widely known novels, Syzyfowe prace. In most cases this work is interpreted as a representation of cruel trials which boys and young men in 19th century Poland had to experience inside a tsarist highschool, where they were not permitted to use their mother tongue and fell prey to severe persecution due to their nationality. However, in this article a Russian highschool in a provincial Polish town, so eloquently and vividly portrayed by Żeromski, is recognized as a form of a total institution, one of those described by Erving Goffman. Permanent supervision and systemic violence is simply inherent to that place, any national issues notwithstanding. Despite being so objectified and oppressed, students find some strategies of rebellion that enables them to live through this degrading experience. To analyze these forms of subversive protest, I use Mikhail Bakhtin’s concept of carnival and the culture of laughter.

Opis:: Zróżnicowanie i różnorodność to terminy, które coraz częściej występują w dyskursie naukowym i popularnonaukowym. Podłożem społecznego i kul- turowego różnicowania się społeczeństw są m.in. procesy migracyjne1. Po- nadto funkcjonowanie współczesnych organizacji opiera się przede wszyst- kim na wiedzy, a umiejętność uczenia się i jego ciągłość są podstawami ich rozwoju2. Kultura organizacji tego rodzaju promuje otwartość, orientację na ludzi, różnorodność osób i ich opinii. Tymczasem w literaturze XX w. wojsko określano jako instytucję totalną3, którą wyróżnia wysoki stopień hierar- chizacji i biurokratyzacji oraz wewnętrzna homogeniczność składu osobo- wego. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przybliżenie tematu zróżnicowania społecznego w wojsku, które było przedmiotem badań autorki zrealizowa- nych w ramach rozprawy doktorskiej4. Przedstawiono tę jej część (niektóre fragmenty są oryginalnie przytoczone), która dotyczy teoretycznych roz- ważań nad zróżnicowaniem społecznym oraz stanowi przegląd wybranych artykułów i monografii poruszających problem zróżnicowania społecznego (w naukach ekonomicznych definiowanego jako różnorodność społeczna, o czym będzie mowa dalej) dostępnych w 2018 r. Autorka artykułu odwołuje się przede wszystkim do literatury zachodniej, by pokazać sposób rozumie- nia i badania zjawiska w armiach wyraźnie bardziej zróżnicowanych społecz- nie niż jeszcze do niedawna Wojsko Polskie.
Social differentiation and diversity are terms which are increasingly common in scientific and popular discourse. Underlying the social and cultural diffe- rentiation of societies are migration processes. In addition, the functioning of modern organizations is primarily based on knowledge, and the ability to learn and its continuity of learning are the foundations of their develop- ment. Moreover, the culture of organizations of this kind promotes open- ness, people-orientation, diversity of people and their opinions. Meanwhile, in the literature of the 20th century, the military was described as a total in- stitution, which is characterized by a high level of hierarchy and bureaucracy and internal homogeneity of personnel composition. The purpose of this ar- ticle is to present the social differentiation in the army, which was the sub- ject of the author’s research carried out as part of his doctoral dissertation. This article presents theoretical considerations of social differentiation and provides an overview of selected articles and monographs on social diffe- rentiation (on economic sciences defined as social diversity, which will be discussed further) which were available in 2018. I primarily refer to western literature to show how the phenomenon has been understood and clearly studied in armies more social diverse than the Polish Army yet.

Opis:: The aim of this article is to outline the issues related to the specificity of the image of the writer and his role in society created in Tadeusz Konwicki’s early works. This stage in the writer’s life opens with the first short story that Konwicki published, namely “Kapral Koziołek i ja” from 1947, after which the initial model of his writing is subject to gradual erosion and ends between 1954 and 1955 with the novel titled Z oblężonego miasta. Investigating the motif of the creative work house on the basis of Z oblężonego miasta is a pretext for reflection on the category of the writer’s work. The article traces the motifs of the professional category of the writer, through analysing the constructions on which Konwicki’s narratives are based. At the same time, due to the analysis of social discourse in which the author participated, the article outlines the social functions he performed at a given time.

Opis:: The paper analyzes publications on refugees in Poland. It presents the conceptual asymmetries and clichés that might hinder the realization of the postulate that the researchers should be the translators of the worldviews of both the refugees and the members of the host society. Three types of asymmetries are being discussed. The first one concerns the unequal regard to the trustworthy and motives of informants. Many authors treat the relations given by the refugees under study as statements on facts, while the relations of other categories of informants as declarations. By the same token, the explaining of the motives of actions in the case of refugees usually takes into account the broad cultural context, while in the case of other categories of research subjects this context is not embodied yet their actions are being evaluated. The second asymmetry pertains to the explanation of the failure of the adaptation processes, which is not matched by a similar one as far as success stories are concerned. Eventually, the third asymmetry consists of differentiated attitudes with regard to the non-governmental organizations and the state agencies. It is often the case that non-governmental organizations are a priori positively evaluated, while state agencies negatively. The paper also considers another often encountered conceptual cliché which describes the centers for refugees as a total institution. The empirical material under analysis shows that these do not fit Erving Goffman's definition of this phenomenon.

Opis:: This article presents an ethnographic account of my day-to-day experiences as a survey researcher in men’s prisons in the United States. I outline challenges I encountered in the field and share personal reflections on interviewing people who are incarcerated. I then put forth a series of implications and suggestions for those who plan to conduct similar studies. Researchers’ firsthand accounts of the data collection process and research settings are crucial because they provide instruction for other scholars. Yet, these aspects of doing research are conventionally ignored in survey researchers’ scholarly publications. Accordingly, this article presents an examination of my work as a survey researcher through an interpretive frame, calls for reflective approaches to conducting quantitative research, and provides a primer on doing research in prison settings.
