Opis:
Michał Głowiński is the author of autobiographical series including: Czarne sezony, Magdalenka z razowego chleba, Kładka nad czasem, Historia jednej topoli  and Kręgi obcości. His works may be analysed in a number of different ways. One of them is to take a view of middle-class values, frequently presented in his autobiographical stories. As Głowiński writes, he comes from a middle-class Jewish family and his grandparents were merchants, the ones in Victorian middle-class style. Głowiński’s stories contribute greatly to a literary documentation of those forever lost people and times; those real ‘old-fashioned townspeople’.

Opis:
In the middle of the 18th century Rzeszów was a property of teodor Hieronim Lubomirski, who ruled the city in the years 1753–1761. One of the characteristic features of the city was a numerous group of Jews residing in the part called Nowe Miasto (New City). Jews had an important economic role in the city, being burdened with obligations typical for inhabitants of a private town. Those were specified in privileges granted by monarchs and city owners to residents and guilds existing in the city. Detailed guidelines of functioning of various sectors of the city were specified in universals issued for inhabitants by city owners. Within the years 1753–1761 Teodor Hieronim Lubomirski singed 13 ordinances that regulated the life of Rzeszów citizens — almost all of them applied to Jewish inhabitants as well. The most important document addressed primarily to that group was the universal of January 9th, 1760 in which he constituted a Jewish butchery as a system of kosher slaughter and introduced a complex system of payments for kosher meat. All universals issued by Teodor Hieronim Lubomirski referred to organising trade in the city and increasing the budget income for the owner.

Rosowska, Justyna
Opis:
The subject of this thesis is social topography of the Florian street in Krakow in the XIV century. In the first chapter I present analyzes of communities associated with the Florian street, made on the basis of the medieval sources. The result is a stratification of this part of the burghers of Cracow. In the second chapter I show the relationships that existed between the hierarchy of the studied group and valuation of urban space, particularly in relation to the street Florian. For a better visualization of the problem I included the annexes, such as index with analyzed group of citizens and a catalog of transactions made by them.
Tematem pracy jest socjotopografia ulicy Floriańskiej w Krakowie w XIV wieku. W pierwszym rozdziale prezentuję analizy społeczności związanej z badanym rejonem miasta, dokonane na podstawie średniowiecznych ksiąg miejskich. W efekcie ustalona zostaje wewnętrzna stratyfikacja tej części mieszczaństwa krakowskiego. W drugim rozdziale przedstawiam zależności, które występowały miedzy hierarchizacją badanej grupy a wartościowaniem przestrzeni miejskiej, zwłaszcza w odniesieniu do ulicy Floriańskiej. Dla dokładniejszego zobrazowania problemu służą między innymi indeks opracowanej grupy mieszczan oraz katalog transakcji przez nich zawieranych.

Opis:
The publication is devoted to the problems of towns and townspeople’s activity in the political life of Poland before the Partitions. The research problem taken up in the article determined the possibly universal understanding of the term “town” and resignation from penetrating into terminological disputes related to the multifaceted nature of “urban issues” resulting in polemical multithreading in the doctrine. A broad temporal range was supposed to show the dynamics of undertaken actions, the progress and regress of the discussed process and the diversity of forms of active participation of towns and townspeople in the political life of the state. The author also tried to consider whether the explored issue could have an impact on the original direction of the systemic evolution of the former Polish statehood.

Opis:
The present article is meant to support the idea of the research methodological concept that underlies a diachronic approach to the study of the Polish language in the aim of providing appropriate methodological and practical tools for analyzing language change and the one that would include historical Polish language in the general study on the language. This, in turn, would create foundations for a better understanding of the linguistic phenomena occurring in more recent times. For the linguistic analyses, some sections of the archival municipal records of the city of Poznan have been selected: the inventories of Poznan’s burghers, whereas the longer passages have been excerpted from the local municipal records of the provincial court of justice, i.e., the records of civil litigation of the town’s board of aldermen. The source material, apart from being undoubtedly helpful in onomastic research, provides additionally an opportunity to learn more about the economic standing of the inhabitants, their professions and occupations and the related social standing. Thus obtained data make it possible to verify and, sometimes, reassess conclusions on thesocial stratification of the local townsfolk, the hierarchy in professions and, in addition, provide grounds for a reliable comparison of the degree and the growth rate in economic improvement between the burghers in Greater Poland and those of other towns and cities in Poland similar in size and importance. On the basis of the resulting lexical and semantic analyses one can conclude that townspeople from Greater Poland of the time were fairly well-off and enjoyed wealth in terms of having an abundance of material and worldly things. The contemporary measure of wealth was everyday consumer goods that featured household linen, table linen and clothing. Household items, such as kitchenware, tableware, bathroom accessories, goods for own use were also considered valuable. In addition, townspeople had also jewelry, real property or money, but these did not constitute any major determinant factors in determining a particular position in the hierarchy of social standing.

Opis:
The article discusses the development of the permanent seat of municipal authorities in western Medieval towns – the most impressive secular public building, the symbol and ‘logo’ of a medieval town (known as a commune). The main subject of analysis is the terminology used to describe various communities of citizens, places for their gatherings and the seat of the municipal authorities, used in source materials, from the oldest mention of communes until the 13th century. The birth of the communes, and development of the language to describe them, are presented against the backdrop of the great social and political processes taking place at the turn of the first and second millennium, in “post-Carolingian Europe”, although initially they were only perceptible in Latin. The common basis for educating Medieval clerks (notaries and town writers) – also in terms of language and law – resulted in a barely differentiable and quickly stabilized Latin terminology for describing the seat of the commune (domus civium, domus civitatis, praetorium). The differentiation is more noticeable in the vernacular languages, especially with reference to words describing the place where citizens held gatherings and the place of work of the first municipal authorities, which enables a fuller perception of the relationship between the place where power was exercised and the political evolution of the commune – the degree of its independence, the system of authority, aspirations to political sovereignty and, lastly, the ideology and communal identity. This terminology reflects the processes and circumstances in which the communes were born and developed, the role, on the one hand, of the bishop, his seat and the cathedral, and on the other, the stormy development of the economy, in particular trade and the establishment of guilds (merchants’ chambers). What is particularly noticeable is the term used by the Italian communes transforming into city-states in the 12th/13th century – palatium (palazzo) – which in Roman law was reserved for the seat of the Emperor, and in the early Medieval period was also used by royalty, and then, in the period in which Italian bishops were losing their powers in Italian towns, appropriated by them to describe the residences which were being extended. The general term for the place where municipal powers were being exercised, consolidated in the 13th/14th century in vernacular languages, has remained little changed down to this day in most regions of the researched area. The article concludes with deliberations on the function of the late Medieval seat of the municipal authorities, provided with a strong tower and which housed the constantly increasing archives, as a place of credibility (locus credibilis), memories and space for social communication.
