Opis:
A reliable dating of forensic traces revealed at the crime scenes is still one of the most challenging issues of forensic science. While there are lot of proprietary research and development methods being promoted and applied within various fields of forensic research, the issue in question remains largely unresolved and as such justifies an evaluation. As fingerprints and bloodstains are nowadays one of the most important types of forensic traces often revealed at crime scenes worldwide and utilized in practice for human identification purposes, a descriptive method has been applied to present current research paths and a potential to provide long awaited resolution of the issue in question. A review of research approaches undertaken by various forensic scientists and joint research teams leads to the conclusion a progress has been achieved through utilization of both new research concepts and application of fast evolving and advancing technologies, yet no scientifically proven ultimate solutions have been presented. This issue remains controversial and still unresolved despite numerous attempts to establish both commonly agreed and reliable markers or characteristics corresponding to a complex issue of ageing of forensic traces, as there are various internal and external factors impacting the process in question.

Opis:
This article addresses the use of the term „trace” for the purposes of criminal profiling. In the literature on criminal profiling, “trace” is usually associated with such terms as “physical”, “forensic”, “behavioral” and “psychological”, whereby the two latter are considered to be the domain of profilers. The aim of this article is to familiarize the reader with the classification of traces used by criminal profilers, usually consisting of physical and forensic traces, as well as the way in which behavioral and psychological traces are defined in criminal profiling. Attention is also drawn to the fact that behavioral and psychological traces are understood in a different way by various authors. Moreover, it happens that the same author gives different meanings to the same term. Meanwhile, the lack of established definitions of behavioral and psychological traces may hinder the evaluation of expert opinions concerning criminal profiles, issued for the purpose of criminal proceedings.

Opis:
We present a new approach to determining supports of extreme, normed by 1, positive definite class functions of discrete groups, i.e. characters in the sense of E. Thoma [8]. Any character of a group produces a unitary representation and thus a von Neumann algebra of linear operators with finite normal trace. We use a theorem of H. Umegaki [9] on the uniqueness of conditional expectation in finite von Neumann algebras. Some applications and examples are given.

Opis:
The theme of this article has been suggested by Miłosz himself, who published in his Sub-jects to Let (the second part of Road¬ side Dog) the short essay Las [The Forest]. Author plaits the net of associations connected with the forest, which leads to reflection that this apparently obvious and exploited by generations of poets topic can still produce various contexts: geographical, natural, economic, political, cultural and literary ones as well as those of sym-bolic, mythical, historical and biographical character. This last context leads back to Miłosz, as a consequence of the reflection that the forest serves as a kind of symbolical frame for many plots present in his life and creativity. From a biographical and literary point of view, the poet leaves the forest. However, in 1997 (when Road¬ side Dog was published), toward the end of his long life, Miłosz returns to the forest in his poetry. He writes a separate text about it. There is a wide range of forest traces (literal, metaphorical, symbolical) between those two moments. They can be noticed in other books by Miłosz.

Opis:
The objective of the study was to demonstrate how mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) can be used to determine the species origin of animal microtraces. The study included pieces of cat and dog hair without the root, a fragment of cooked chicken bone (0.1g), three goose down samples (0.028 g), a pork swab, a pork scratching (5×5×5 mm), and pork lard (0.22 g). DNA was isolated from all of these samples using the method appropriate for the particular source material. The extracts had DNA concentration exceeding 5.4 ng/µl with A260/280 purity range of 1.14-1.88. Next, the samples were subjected to PCR and real-time PCR with species-specific primers and primers complementary to mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). Control reactions based on the amplification of eukaryotic-specific fragment (18S rRNA) were additionally performed. PCR and real-time PCR products for detection of species-specific mtDNA were obtained for all templates, whereas during the detection of eukaryote DNA no product was obtained for dog and cat hair only. The poor quality of the obtained DNA did not prevent the analysis. The results showed that mitochondrial DNA is suitable for identification of small or highly processed samples, in which genomic DNA often cannot be analyzed.

This paper studies the subset of singular traces generated by exponentiation-invariant extended limits. We describe relations between this subset and other important subsets of singular traces. We prove several conditions for measurability of operators from the weak trace class ideal with respect to the traces generated by exponentiation-invariant extended limits. We resolve an open question raised in [S. Lord, F. Sukochev, Measure theory in noncommutative spaces, SIGMA Symmetry Integrability Geom. Methods Appl. 6 (2010), paper 072, 36] in the setting of the weak trace class ideal.

Opis:
In recent years there has been concern connected with the practice of collecting classic forensic traces in crime scenes. apart from this there are some problems concerning their accessibility. The main factor which affects the possibility of disclosing evidence negatively is the decreasing quality of forensic activities. Moreover, poorly trained police officers do not usually know how to use tactically the information content of forensic evidence. During the preparatory proceedings problems connected with small value of detection of classic evidence appear. also the significance of aFis and genom databases decreases and obtaining reference material is becoming difficult. in such situations law enforcement authorities do not have to be helpless because, while committing a crime, memory traces of this events are formed in the mind of a perpetrator. they can be revealed objectively by polygraph examination aimed at excluding and confirming a person’s connection with the event. in many cases, however, there is no alternative for polygraph, which was presented in this article.

Opis:
The interlocutory dialogicality of press discourse manifests itself, among other things, in the use of common expressions that give the impression that “it is the language that speaks, not its users” (Bonhomme, 2012, p. 77). Euphemisms, for example, are used to raise difficult or polemic inducing issues, such as poverty, exclusion, war, politics, etc. Meanwhile, expressions that have become common in the source language, and are consistent with generally accepted norms, do not always remain transparent during the translation process. Depending on the translator’s choices, the phrases used in the target text can have various effects, ranging from the erasure of sensitive topics, to their hyperbolization. The subject of the paper is the comparison of articles published in the French monthly Le Monde diplomatique and their translations, which appeared on the pages of the Polish edition of this periodical. Its aim is to reveal the traces of the translator’s presence, visible through his or her ways of interpreting euphemistic phrases, or toning down harsh expressions.

Opis:
Some of pe roxide s : t r i a c e tone t r ipe roxide (TATP) , hexamethylenetriperoxidediamine (HMTD) have been used recently as "irregular" explosives for delinquency and international terrorism purposes. The intimate knowledge of properties and methods of analysis of these substances is necessary for experts. Forensic investigations of some peroxides explosives: triacetonetriperoxide (TATP) and hexamethylenetriperoxidediamine (HMTD) were carried out in this work. The detonation process of peroxides initiation by means of pyroxylin layer ignition was investigated, velocity of detonation at apparent density (ρ HMTD = 0.38 g/cm3, ρ TATP = 0.47 g/cm3) was measured by means of a Russian fotoregister GFR-3. These data were compared with literature detonation velocity values that had been measured at larger densities. The values of detonation velocities complement each other rather well, linear dependencies of D vs. ρ found at densities ρ = 0.35-1.2 g/cm3. The high sensitivity of the investigated analytical methods, that were applied (10-5 -10<-8 g) facilitate the determination of possible times for finding traces of TATP after an explosion. Time t = 6 hours after explosion is the critical time for finding peroxides traces of TATP on a metal surface by means of analytical methods used in this work.

Opis:
The experience of reminiscences/dreams lies at the roots of the theory of individual and social memory. The author compares childhood remembrance-pictures of the two important events of 28 June 1956 in Poznań with documental photographs collected in the Museum of Poznań Uprising 1956. These traces-documents are apparently different in comparison with tablets fitted on the pavement leading to the Museum. Memory is plural, and there are three main levels of recognition, memory and forgetting discussed by the author.
