Opis:: This study investigates the similarities and differences between official and unofficial audiovisual translators in Poland. The research examines seven main categories of interest, including basic information about the research group, education background, actual translation education, individual mastering of AVT skills through non-institutionalised self-education, translators’ preferences for AVT, their workspace, and aspects of teamwork. The data collected from these categories were used to establish a multifaceted comparison of professionals working in the audiovisual translation field in Poland. The study is based on two online surveys examining almost 100 audiovisual translators in Poland. According to the acquired data, official translators are predominantly women, whereas unofficial translators are mainly men, and both groups are formed mostly by people below the age of forty. AVT is the most popular form of translation for both groups, with subtitling is the predominant AVT mode. The study highlights differences in the types of productions each group works on, the software they use in their work, and their collaboration with other specialists in the translation process.

Opis:: In order to be a part of an explanatory theory of translation, translation competence should be taken as the specific competence a translator needs beyond general types of competence, such as the knowledge of the source language and the target language. In literary translation, the translator is an expert reader of the source text, whereas in scientific translation it is unrealistic and not necessary to expect this. This imposes different requirements on translation competence.

Opis:: The presented paper focuses on the problem of machine translation, especially statistical machine translation. The idea behind MT was the concept of the computers’ ability to translate some basic and schematical texts by using databases of grammar and vocabulary. Currently MT is not only a fast-developing field of study, but also a popular and (in many cases) free of charge method of translating texts for personal use, for example via Google Translate.

Opis:: The paper deals with the principles of translation by Karl Dedecius (Vom Übersetzen, 1986), analysed by the students of German at the University of Wrocław 2019–21. After a short presentation of Dedecius’ biography, the author of the article deals with several translation models by Dedecius and their reception in the in Polish-German classes. Afterwards follows an analysis of several poems of Tadeusz Różewicz and their translations by Dedecius in various versions created between 1965 and 1999. The students noticed that the changes in the following versions went most often towards a more detailed translation and its closer relation to the original. They were further inspired not only by various translation principles and their realisation, but also by Dedecius’ idea to correct his own translations.

Tytuł:: A Study in Sherlock: A case study of the voice-over translation of the TV series Sherlock

Opis:: This thesis is dedicated to the study of the voice-over translations of the TV series Sherlock. It is concerned with the translational problems created not only by the constraints of the method, but also by the specifics of the programme. In order to investigate the matter in detail, this work has been divided into three main chapters.The first chapter begins with a presentation of the Sherlock Holmes phenomenon upon which grew all the future adaptations, along with the BBC production. Further in this chapter, the TV series and the main characters from it are presented. The knowledge of the canon stories and the specifics of the show is important while examining the translations to know what is essential and has to be conveyed to the viewers.The second chapter covers the outline of the audiovisual translation and its three main methods, with the main focus on the voice-over translation and its position on Polish television. This chapter introduces the constraints and possibilities of the method that I am focusing on in this work. The specifics of the medium have to be taken into consideration while analysing the translations.The third chapter is a case study of chosen scenes from Sherlock and the two Polish voice-over translations. The chapter is divided in two parts: the first discussing the medium limitations and the second focusing on the various problems caused by the language and culture differences. The first part is concerned mainly with the rendering of Sherlock’s deductions, which are very fast monologues conveying a lot of information. The voice-over translation’s limitations preclude preserving the entire monologue; therefore, the translator faces a problem as to what the viewers can be deprived of. The second part of the chapter discusses the translational problems in preserving the character’s individualisation that are caused by the differences between the languages and cultures. The study is based on the transcriptions of the voice-over translations of chosen scenes from the series. The complete transcription, prepared by myself, is included in the appendix.

Opis:: The created world of Ada Palmer’s Terra Ignota series depicts a future society where gender identity has undergone a process of uniformisation, resulting in the erasure of gendered language. The novels take the form of a confessional (a recounting of the events of the past) which are published in the future society without the express consent of the other characters taking part in the depicted course of events. The narrator, in a motivated show of re bellion against their society’s current ideology (discussed both at the beginning of the series and as they progress with the narration), reinscribes gendered pronouns onto the unknowing characters; however, this is done on an arbitrary basis, which the narrator does not always discuss. The present paper aims to emphasize the growing number of LGBT+ novels published and the impossibility of transposing them into Romanian due to the lack of a gender-neutral pronoun that does not default to the masculine. The paper analyses Too Like the Lightning by Ada Palmer in order to specify the various nuances that would be lost in the cultural adaptation and translation of the novel into Romanian, a translation which has yet to occur, given the complexity and constraints of the novel and the depicted ideology behind it.
