Opis:: This paper reviews Paweł Rojek’s book Tropy i uniwersalia: Badania ontologiczne (Tropes and Universals: Ontological Investigations). The subject of the book are the titular notions of tropes (i.e., abstract particulars) and universals. The first three chapters contain conceptual clarifications and the remaining three chapters are devoted to the interpretation of particular philosophers (Roman Ingarden, Thomas Aquinas, Hegel, and George Frederick Stout) in the light of the previously introduced distinctions. The review summarizes each chapter and discusses some objections to the author’s theses.

Opis:: Le mythe du vampire a inspiré de nombreuses créations littéraires et audio-visuelles qui ont, pour certaines, cherché à atteindre un public adolescent. C’est le cas de la saga cinématographique Twilight (adaptation des romans de Stephenie Meyer) que les quatre BD espagnoles du cycle Crepúsculon s’emploient à parodier. Nous aborderons Crepúsculon en adoptant une approche exclusivement linguistique, et, en particulier, dans le cadre de cet article, onomastique, par le biais des tropes rhétoriques.
The myth of the vampire inspired many literary and audio-visual creations. Some of them tried to seduce a young audience. This is the case of the Twilight saga films (adaptation of the Stephenie Meyer novels), that the four Spanish comics of the cycle Crepúsculon want to parody. We will study Crepúsculon adopting an exclusively linguistic approach and more precisely, in this article, an onomastic approach, through rhetorical tropes.

Opis:: Universals are usually considered to be universal properties. Since tropes are particular properties, if there are only tropes, there are no universals. However, universals might be thought of not only as common properties, but also as common aspects ("determinable universals") and common wholes ("concrete universals"). The existence of these two latter concepts of universals is fully compatible with the assumption that all properties are particular. This observation makes possible three different trope theories, which accept tropes and no universals, tropes and determinable universals and tropes and concrete universals

Tytuł:: Tropes, universals and visual phenomenology

Opis:: Both philosophers of perception and analytic metaphysicians apply the tropes/universals distinction when considering the ontological status of visual properties. One way of arguing in favour of the trope interpretation of visual properties is to claim that the way in which we visually experience properties makes it plausible to characterize them as tropes. In this article, I argue for a different position, namely that the way in which we visually experience properties provides a serious challenge for the trope interpretation, but not for an interpretation in terms of universals. More specifically, I claim that the trope interpretations of visual properties have problems accounting for the fact that ordinary, veridical visual experiences can present the properties of two objects as strictly similar.

Opis:: The main aim of this paper is to propose a new Polish translation one of the well-known Michel de Montaigne’s essays, De la vanité des paroles (On the Vanity of Words, I 51). For the humanist, rhetoric delimited only to elocution responsible for linguistic adornments becomes the subject for critical investigation. In a short introduction to the essay, the author takes into consideration the rhetoric of Montaigne’s discourse on ‘the vanity of words’ with a particular attention to two rhetorical forms: amplification and figuration. Raising questions about lack of temperance in amplifying and adorning words with tropes and figures, the humanist attempted to revalorize linguistic and stylistic simplicity. Therefore, to find the proper words for various things, emotions and experiences are the central concern of an essay, a new literary genre invented by Montaigne.

Opis:: Applying linguistic tropes to the deep structure which underlay the 19th century historical imagination Hayden White derived from the vault of philosophical richness contained in Giambattista Vico’s La Scienza Nuova. Now the treasure trove becomes a source of one more illuminating analogy. The following study demonstrates how metaphor, metonymy, synecdoche and irony can be identified with five major theories of truth: the correspondence, pragmatic, coherence, deflationary and the semantic one. Theories are evoked on the basis of texts by philosophers themselves (Bertrand Russell, Charles Sanders Peirce, Brand Blanshard et al.). Moreover, a numerical mismatch between them and the four tropes should be seen as everything but unwanted. The concept of irony has multiple interpretations, and so mapping it onto the semantic theory will expose the relation between truth accounts and the principle of their development. In the end, there emerges a pattern in the shape of a circle or a spiral—two models of infinity along which runs the human quest for meaning of truth.
