Opis:
The aim of this article is to explore the dynamics of truth-making in contemporary Western societies, which are no longer unified by a shared ontology and epistemology. Drawing on symbolic interactionism, social constructivism, and the sociology of emotions, I demonstrate that emotions—particularly shame and pride— play a pivotal role in the objectification of knowledge and experience, thereby enabling the maintenance of a shared reality. To understand the evolving role of shame in the construction of truth, I focus on the dynamics of localized collective interactions. I argue that grassroot collectives that inhabit digital locations are currently at the forefront of collaborative truth-making, as they construct and maintain distinct spaces with afford for shame work—navigating shame experienced by their members in external contexts—and internal emotional regulation. These emotional dynamics result in a localized ordering of reality contributing to the fragmentation of truth in contemporary societies.

Opis:
Various scholars of ethics and economics conduct research on the best modes of decision making which guarantee good outcome and moral behaviour of the individuals involved. Either of the modes considered, rules with regulations or discretion and judgment, find applicability in diversified professional circumstances. The paper investigates how discretion can be used in professional activity by using the Aristotelic-Thomistic framework. Results indicate that such a framework can be used by engineers in their working environments and by other working professionals with the main proposition that only in discretionary decision making is the person able to take full responsibility for the outcomes and to premeditate their moral worth in conscience before resolving to commit the act itself.

Opis:
There is an ongoing investigation by scholars of ethics and economics into whether human decision making and the resultant acts should be guided by rules and procedures or by judgment and discretion. Although each of these modes offers advantages and disadvantages to decision makers, they are by no means neutral in their effect on professional development. The paper presents an in-depth view of discretionary decisions using an Aristotelian-Thomistic framework. This is the first of the series of papers which focus on the application of realistic philosophical principles to ethical professional behaviour and decision making in daily practice. Results indicate that classical philosophical theories which use virtues and truth as indispensable components still may give rise to desirable and moral conduct among individuals who apply them.
