Opis:
Kinetic Typography is, generally speaking, animated text. It has been considered purely in terms of graphics as well as a new kind of communication, bringing some of the expressive power of film. It is worth looking at kinetic typography in the context of typography in general, the art in which signs (letters) refer to the text – a linguistic form with a certain meaning. This kind of animation highlights tropes in the given text, dictates the pace of reading, and refers to meaning itself, building “illustrations” to the text from individual glyphs, and rendering the atmosphere of the narrative situation. In the end, the animation gains a polyphonic character, when the narration from the text is carried out in parallel with the narration resulting from the graphical layer of the message, which helps building ironic or humorous tension. That proves that kinetic typography is semantically emancipating, although it is still an adaptation.

Twórczość literacka, naukowa i publicystyczna w języku ojczystym - oczywista dla wychodźców powrześniowych, duchowo oraz ideowo związanych z II Rzeczpospolitą – stała się od końca lat 40. ubiegłego wieku przedmiotem ożywionej akcji wydawniczej w krajach położonych na zachód od żelaznej kurtyny. Stanisław Gliwa (1910-1986) - grafik, typograf, żołnierz Armii Andersa, a w czasach studenckich uczeń Stanisława Szukalskiego - po 1947 roku dołączył do grona emigracji londyńskiej, dla której tworzył i projektował estetyczne druki. Równolegle, jako uznany członek London Chapel of Private Press Printers, rozwijał swoją typofilską pasję. Niniejsza książka jest pierwszą monografią dotyczącą twórczości Stanisława Gliwy, uwzględniającą w szerszym niż dotychczas zakresie kontekst działalności artysty w środowisku wychodźców. Informacje w niej zawarte pochodzą z archiwaliów drukarza zdeponowanych w Wojewódzkiej Bibliotece Publicznej - Książnicy Kopernikańskiej w Toruniu.

Opis:
The concept of typography over the centuries changed its meaning. Special transformation of the meaning of the term occurred in the late nineteenth/twentieth century, when typography ceased to be the exclusive domain of printers and the art of beautiful type. The transformation of the modern world, new ways of communication, as well as changes of social and technological character meant that its functional and productive nature started to be clearly accentuated. Today, when typography entered the digital space, gaining a wide range of new means of expression, its value as a tool of visual communication, of the mediator between the author and the reader is obviously emphasized. Its aesthetic function, so important in the past, becomes of less significance. The paper summarizes various definitions of typography, both those of foreign, as well as of Polish authors, showing the evolution of the concept. Particular attention was paid to the development of the concept of typography in Poland in the difficult period of the communist regime, the chaos of the 90s, and today.

Współcześnie książkę uważamy za nieodłączny element codzienności. Od dziecka jesteśmy zaznajomieni z jej wyglądem, charakterystyką i funkcjonalnością. Towarzyszy nam praktycznie przez całe życie – w szkole, na uniwersytecie, w domu i często również w pracy. Wydaje się, że jest to dobrze znany nam przedmiot, który nie skrywa przed żadnych tajemnic, mimo różnych dostępnych formatów i sposobów produkcji. Książka kojarzy się głównie z wiedzą i jej dalszym przekazywaniem, z nauką i możliwością rozwoju, z czasem jednak jednym z jej głównych celów stała się również rozrywka, realizowana poprzez komercyjne publikacje literackie. Celem mojej pracy jest wykazanie na przykładzie książki japońskiej i jej historii, że mimo obecnego we współczesnym procesie produkcji książek ujednolicenia procesów produkcyjnych oraz wyglądu publikacji, możemy wyróżnić charakterystyczne elementy kulturowej estetyki, której globalizacja i nowoczesna technologia nie są w stanie w pełni wykorzenić.
Nowadays book is considered to be an inherent part of everyday life. Since childhood we are acquainted with books appearence, characteristic and its functionality. Book is accompanying us through whole life - at school, at the university, at home, and very often also at work. It seems like it is a well known object, which cannot hold any secrets from us, despite a variety of available sizes and production methods. The book is associated mainly with knowledge and its further transmit, with science and the its development, altough sometimes one of its main goal is entertainment, accomplished through commercial literary publications.The goal of my thesis is to show on the example of the japanese book and its history, that despite present unification in book production process and its appearence we can distinguish characteristic elements of cultural aesthetics, which globalization and modern technology cannot fully uproot.

Works belonging to the world literary canon are widely commented on by literary scholars. The editorial aspects of the editions of the same works, however, do not have such thorough studies. The discussion of the editorial features of children’s publications seems to be all the more important because improperly selected typographic parameters may significantly impair the quality of the reading experience and discourage reading itself. The article indicates the importance of particular architectural elements of the Polish editions of two masterpieces of children’s literature, Winnie the Pooh and Alice in Wonderland, which appeared in Poland after 1989. The indication of specific typographical sizes and layouts of illustrations makes it possible to determine reading competences which should be possessed by a reader designed by the publisher, and thus also to prove whether a particular edition has been given an appropriate editorial design for the recipient.

Opis:
According to the author, the knowledge about the rules of typography is not enough to become a specialist in the field of typography. It is important to know the problems associated with the text perception processes (readability and legibility). A determinant of designer’s action shall be the functionality of created message, and design decisions (including those related to the ultimate editorial form) must serve the transparency of communication. The author also points out differences among typography authorities on the rules and principles used, discusses some of them and justifies why they are not an automatic success guarantee in the communication process. A conclusion is that only an analysis of the text content, its structure, purpose and context, and also the reader (a recipient of the message) shall indicate which rules could apply. Thus Bierkowski notes to consider all aspects of the proposed message.

The Unicode standard is designed as a framework for the worldwide interchange and processing of documents written in various languages and from various technical disciplines. The Unicode standard, however, does not define glyph images and neglects typography. Nevertheless, it has been adapted as the de facto standard in topography. The advantages of such a universal standard are obvious, but its objectives result in serious drawbacks in typographical applications. Therefore our conclusion is that it will be advisable to explore alternative solutions.
