Opis:
Shopping centers are a relatively new element of the urban space of Polish cities, which affects the shaping of the urban tissue. The research problem of this article is to establish, how the areas of Cracow's shopping centers are developed and what values of basic urban indicators for these areas are adopted in planning documents. The subject of the research are the areas of all shopping centers located in Cracow. The aim is to determine the trends in the way these areas are developed against the background of the planning documents that are in force. In the first instance, based on GIS analyses, the values of selected 3 parameters were calculated: the building plot ratio, the floor area ratio and the green plot ratio. Then, they were compared with the values adopted in selected local development plans. The research shows that shopping centre buildings in Cracow occupy on average less than 50% of the investment area. Only a small part of the plot is developed in the form of greenery (on average 14.92%). In planning documents, the floor area ratio often allows the creation of investments of very different intensity.

Urban metabolism is a multi-disciplinary approach to qualitatively and quantitatively evaluate resource flows in urban systems, which aims to provide important insights into the dynamics of cities to make them more ecologically responsible. It has been also introduced into the urban design domain, however most of the attempts concern only tracking of energy and/or material flows to reduce environmental impacts by redesigning closed loops in a specific area. The hypothesis of this paper is that the concept of urban metabolism, and its indicators, could play an important role in advancing the science and practice related to sustainability in urban design and development. At the moment, however we lack indicators to support evaluation of urban design related decisions from the perspective of urban metabolism. The aim of this paper is to explore the application of urban metabolism indicators in urban design based on their characteristics. It reviews development periods of the concept and analytical models of urban metabolism, in order to identify crucial urban metabolism indicators for urban design. Next, these urban metabolism indicators are classified regarding type of analytical model, accounting method, indicator type, and indicator level. Finally, several suggestions are offered on how to integrate urban metabolism indicators into urban design. In addition, directions for future research on the topic are discussed.

Opis:
Poszukiwania różnych form intensywnej zabudowy mieszkaniowej często prowadzą do nietypowych rozwiązań projektowych.
Compact housing development is nowadays a challenge in the era of progressive urbanization and decreasing land resources. At the same time, it is also a threat due to the spatial solutions it generates. The search for various forms of intensive housing development often leads to unusual design solutions. The article presents a study of selected examples of single-family housing (terraced, two-room and quadruple). The aim of the article is to present various forms of compact single-family housing - their advantages and disadvantages as well as the values of urban indicators that characterize these solutions.

Research using lichens as bioindicators of air pollution has been conducted in the city of Łomża. The presence of indicator species of epiphytic and epilithic lichens has been analysed. A 4-point lichen scale has been developed for the test area, on the basis of which four lichenoindication zones have been determined. The least favourable conditions for lichen growth have been recorded in the city center. Green areas and open spaces are the areas with the most favourable impact of the urban environment on lichen biota.

Opis:
Comparative studies of the condition of the economies of cities entail numerous challenges including the availability of adequate data and the accuracy of the empirical and inferential indicators. The purpose of the article is a critical analysis of indicators used in comparative studies of the level of economic development in Polish towns and cities. The review shows a large variety of measures used by the authors and the occurrence of several different analytical perspectives. On the one hand, based on the analyses, it seems that the choice of methods is determined by the availability of data in public statistics. On the other hand, it is related to the experience of authors regarding to the features that influence of the economic condition of cities. Moreover, this also involves the determination of the authors to obtain alternative measures compared to those collected by the Central Statistical Office. As the main research challenge, the authors identified poor availability of data related to the structural dimension, innovativeness and financial condition of urban economies. Furthermore, activities that could contribute to solving identified problems have been elaborated on. Those includes: increasing cooperation and the public-public partnerships, strengthening the role of the Regional Development Observatories and adopting a methods of data compilation and collection that would accurately respond to the diagnostic needs.
Studia porównawcze kondycji gospodarek miast niosą ze sobą wiele wyzwań, związanych m.in. z problemem dostępności adekwatnych danych i trafności wykorzystywanych wskaźników empirycznych i inferencyjnych.

Opis:
Biological invasions are considered one of the most important threats to biodiversity worldwide, and their intensity increases with urbanization. Potentilla indica, a perennial stoloniferous plant of Asian origin, is a newly emerging invasive alien species in European cities and other areas. Due to its wide ecological range, it may threaten many native species, especially in urban riparian forests which are particularly susceptible to plant invasions. Although it shows high phenotypic plasticity, its coverage and morphological variability depending on the type of vegetation and abiotic factors in natural conditions have not been studied so far. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to explore this issue, using phytosociological relevés and measurements of selected environmental factors and morphological features of P. indica in Kraków, the second largest city in Poland, central Europe. We demonstrated that the coverage and morphological traits of P. indica can be significantly affected by the type of plant community, and the presence and abundance of the species in urban habitats are strongly related to soil moisture, electrical conductivity, and fertility. We also found that the coverage of P. indica is positively correlated with the Evenness index, height of herbaceous layer, soil electrical conductivity and moisture, and negatively with the number of species, soil compactness, and phosphorus content in the soil. We further revealed that the size of the leaves and the length of the pedicels and stolons in P. indica can be positively influenced by its coverage. To prevent the invasion of P. indica in riparian forests and other urban habitats, we suggest controlling its cultivation and disposal, removing new appearances, and maintaining high species diversity with a dominance of one or a few native species in plant communities.

Opis:
The transformation processes that occur in the technical, informational, and economic spheres of the regions require the development of new conceptual approaches to the development of a full-fledged land use system based on an analysis of the problems of using underground real estate. Determination of the features of land use of underground real estate is based on a quantitative basis, which is built on a systematic, integrated approach. Indicators that determine the condition and use of underground real estate are of particular importance for the development of the approach. A method of estimating a generalized indicator of the use of underground real estate in the system of land use of regions based on an integrated approach, which includes the method of expert assessments by applying qualitative indicators characterizing the status and level of use of underground real estate, considering urban, spatial, investment and innovation legal and safety features is developed. The assessment results of the integrated indicator of underground real estate land use, as well as the results of the assessment by region, showed a low level of use of underground real estate in the land use system of the regions. It is determined that most of the lands in the regions have low levels of underground real estate use. Besides, there is a need to increase the use of underground real estate by developing appropriate methodological recommendations.

Opis:
Homestead Gardens are frequently located close to main transport routes characterized by a great intensity of traffic. The highest accumulation of heavy metals has been observed in the topsoil adjacent to roads. The aim of conducted studies was to determine: the effects of urban pollution on soil chemical properties and chemical composition of selected vegetables and indicator plants, in the soil of family allotment gardens in Gorzów Wielkopolski. There is a statistically significant higher concentration of the heavy metals in the soils adjacent to the road in comparison with the soils lying ca. 20, 50 and 100 m from the road, respectively. The obtained values of heavy metals were generally lower or close to those commonly considered natural in soils, vegetables and indicator plants. Only the nickel and cobalt content was high.
Najwyższe nagromadzenie metali ciężkich zaobserwowano w wierzchniej warstwie gleb przylegającej do dróg. Celem przeprowadzonych badań było określenie: wpływu zanieczyszczeń miejskich na właściwości chemiczne gleby i skład chemiczny wybranych warzyw i roślin wskaźnikowych w glebie rodzinnych ogródków działkowych w Gorzowie Wielkopolskim. Stwierdzono statystycznie istotne wyższe stężenie metali ciężkich w glebach przylegających do drogi w porównaniu z glebą leżącą 20, 50 i 100 m od drogi.
