Nieszawa, which is situated in northern Poland, is unique in the history of Polish-German relations. In 1945 local Polish militiamen murdered a group of German civilians there. In 2000, after decades of public silence about this crime, the leaders of the local community decided to commemorate the victims. In this article, the mutual influence of three kinds of (non-)memory of the crime-national official, local official, and vernacular- are analyzed. In conclusion, some of the factors are identified that make members of a group that mistreated "Others" accept the truth about the event and acknowledge the need to discuss it publicly.

Tekst rozważa dyskurs pamięciowy jako potencjalnie wielopoziomowy (Deleuze/Guattari, teoria "mniejszej literatury"), zwracając jednocześnie uwagę na słabość warstwy wernakularnej, najściślej zlokalizowanej (Haraway). W tym obszarze można szczególnej uwagi wymagają procesy o wzajemnie sprzecznych wektorach: jednocześnie podtrzymujące i blokujące pamięć o danym wydarzeniu. Zjawiska tego rodzaju można nazwać "niepamięcią". "Niepamięć" różniłaby się od "zapominania" tym, że byłaby stanem nieprzywilejującym słownego kontaktu jako normy w transferze pamięci. Łączyłaby zdeformowane środki symboliczne (zmityzowane narracje, sentencje, urywane zdania) i pozasymboliczne (niewerbalne elementy mowy, gesty) z działaniami somatycznymi i aktami performatywnymi (interakcje z obiektami i ludźmi). W obszarze "niepamięci" "milcząca wiedza" i "powstrzymywanie się od mówienia" brałyby udział w transmisji jeszcze nieuzgodnionego, niegotowego do wysłowienia, emocjonalnego i cielesnego doświadczenia przeszłości.
The article discusses a concept of non-memory (emerging in Polish vernacular, in Polish sociology and Roma -Sinti Holocaust studies) as an inclusive term covering those component processes of remembering that resist symbolization. Non-memory it is not identical to forgetting, amnesia or repression. It is a middle terrain of the operation of memory, rich in action especially when it has to do with a difficult or conflicted past. By taking up a bottom-up scholarship, without privileging what is communicative, cultural, symbolic, memory studies can access phenomena that explain the processes of remembering of contentious heritage.

Opis:
The aim of this text is to present the internal differentiation of Ukrainian social memory. The author concentrates on vernacular memory of three issues that are essential in regard to Ukrainian identity: the Second World War and the conflict between the Ukrainian Insurgent Army and the Soviet authorities, Holodomor, and the Holocaust. Her analysis is based on her own research conducted in Galicia and Central Ukraine, searches in oral history sources, and also on the published and unpublished results of qualitative research by other researchers and public opinion surveys. Her main conclusions involve the unconsonant nature of different memories with differentiations of regional populations, the unifying nature of memory of the Holodomor, the strongly polarizing memory of the UIA as a potential factor of social conflict, and the problematic nature of memory of the Holocaust.

Central and Eastern Europe - scenes of brutal genocides in the past century - are dotted with sites of trauma. Only some of those potential sites of memory are currently marked with plaques or memorials. Mnemonic responses to such sites do occur but are not part of an easily readable symbolic system within official culture. They are often contradictory: at once supporting and blocking memory about a given event. The concept of “non-memory” developed by Polish sociologists might be helpful in grasping vernacular memorial activities that do not privilege verbal contact as the norm in the transfer of memory. Non-memory tends to combine dismantled symbolic means and extra-symbolic embodied tools and performative acts. Non-memory therefore takes part in the transmission of an experience of the past in particular when the past turns out to be difficult or impossible to inscribe within available cognitive frameworks.

Vernacular historical practices on Holocaust non-sites of memory in Poland

The approach employed by memory activists to sites of memory often involves historical practices. This paper presents the results of the examination of historical practices undertaken in locations of Holocaust violence during World War II and the disposal of victims’ remains that were not memorialised properly according to local residents or other groups with an interest in the sites’ past. The analysed practices were observed in the course of field research in various locations in Poland. The goal of the research was to describe these practices, discuss their critical potential, and indicate their distinct features as activities pertaining to contested sites of memory. A central tool for approaching this task is found in concepts of “non-site of memory” and “vernacular historian” as introduced to the debate by Claude Lanzmann and Lyle Dick. As a result, the article presents the cases of four vernacular historians whose practices are experimental combinations of the components of the work of professional historians and ways of working conditioned by local cultural environments, individual experience and commitment to communal life. Although vernacular history is sometimes considered of little value by academic historians, the research shows that the practices in question have the potential to produce new, socially relevant knowledge. Two distinct features of vernacular historical practices in non-sites of memory were observed: these unmarked sites of burial attract activists and prompt them to undertake historical practices; vernacular historians of these locations often undertake unconventional, sometimes experimental activities.

Based on preliminary research, we ask what insights can be gleaned about Polish Holocaust memory and testimony by examining the prolific art made by Polish ‘folk’ artists, via a range of disciplinary approaches. What can art history, visual culture studies, oral history, anthropology, memory studies, and museum studies tell us about the motivations, functions, and ethical implications of such works? Can they be considered acts of witness? Broadly, our text considers the status of "art naïve" in the contexts of Holocaust representation, ethnographic museology, and bystander testimony.

W polskiej literaturze dotyczącej pamięci termin „niepamięć” (nie należy utożsamiać go z zapomnieniem) zajmuje w ostatnich latach ważne miejsce. Wydaje się, że dyskusje naukowe dotyczące kwestii doświadczeń wojennych i powojennych zostały zdominowane przez język psychoanalizy, warto jednak sięgnąć również po języki wernakularne. Autor rozważa kwestie pamięci i niepamięci w odniesieniu do niezwykle traumatycznych doświadczeń powojennych, które stały się podstawą dwóch krótkich filmów Nie sądzić (reż. Pawlina Carlucci Sforza i Magdalena Lubańska, 2017) oraz Wielki strach (reż. Pawlina Carlucci Sforza, 2020). Filmy te przedstawiają ten problem z różnych perspektyw – pierwszy w sposób pośredni, drugi wprost. Ludzie powracający po wojnie z przymusowych robót w Niemczech byli okradani i mordowani przez bandytów w lesie w okolicy Przeworska. Traumatyczne wspomnienia o tych wydarzeniach były skrywane przez ponad siedemdziesiąt lat.
Recently, the term “non-memory” (which should not be equated with oblivion) has gained importance in the Polish discourse on memory. It seems that scholarly discussions analysing the issues of World War II and post-war experiences have been dominated by the language of psychoanalysis; however, it is worth taking into consideration also vernacular languages. The author discusses the issues of memory and non-memory in relation to the extremely traumatic post-war experiences depicted in the two short films Nie sądzić (Not to Judge, dir. Pawlina Carlucci Sforza and Magdalena Lubańska, 2017) and Wielki strach (The Fear, dir. Pawlina Carlucci Sforza, 2020). They deal with this issue from different perspectives: the first in a more indirect way, the second – directly. People returning from forced labour in Germany after World War II were plundered and murdered by a local gang in a forest near Przeworsk. Traumatic knowledge about these events had been hidden for over seventy years.
