Pierwsze lata panowania Konstantyna w Brytanii i Galii były w dużej mierze kontynuacją sposobu sprawowania władzy, który został stworzony przez cesarza Dioklecjana. To w tym "starym duchu" na przełomie III i IV wieku po narodzeniu Chrystusa była również przedstawiana idea Virtus, którą umieszczano wówczas na monetach. Dzięki analizie serii menniczych można jednak uchwycić zapowiedź tych wręcz rewolucyjnych, przyszłych zmian, jakie będzie niosło ze sobą uznanie chrześcijaństwa za w pełni legalną religię na terenie państwa rzymskiego. Znacznemu przeobrażeniu ulegnie również sama idea Virtus, a w tym także jej adaptacja do doktryny chrześcijańskiej. Intencją autora niniejszego tekstu, w nawiązaniu do tytułowego problemu, jest zatem ukazanie kontekstu tych niezwykle ważnych i już niedługo mających nastąpić zmian w państwie rzymskim.
The first years of Constantine's reign in Britain and Gaul were largely a continuation of the mode of government established by Emperor Diocletian. It was in this "old spirit" at the turn of the third and fourth centuries after the birth of Christ that the idea of Virtus, which was then placed on coins, was also represented. Through an analysis of the mint series, however, it is possible to grasp a foreshadowing of those downright revolutionary future changes that the recognition of Christianity as a fully legal religion within the Roman state would bring. The idea of Virtus itself will also undergo a significant transformation, including its adaptation to Christian doctrine. The intention of the author of this text, in relation to the title problem, is therefore to show the context of these extremely important and soon-to-be changes in the Roman state.

The review of Józef Maria Ruszar’s book Słońce republiki. Cywilizacja rzymska w twórczości Zbigniewa Herberta (2014) [Sun of the republic. Roman civilisation in Zbigniew Herbert’s work]. The author of the review emphasises that Ruszar convincingly inscribed Herbert’s fascination with antiquity (especially Roman antiquity) in the whole historiosophical reflection of the poet. The conviction about the progressive disintegration of the structures of civilization and society was closely related in Herbert’s writing with the sustained defence of Roman virtus. However, the thesis that in his poetic work Herbert was disputing with the programme and ideology of the literary modernism is perceived by the reviewer as questionable.

The article presents the story of Lucrece, legendary heroine and noble wife of Lucius Tarquinius Collatinus, whose suicide was presented many times in the ancient Roman and Renaissance literature by historiographers and poets. The author compares few versions of Lucrece’s story focusing on her virtues (like castitas, obstinata pudicitia, decus muliebris) that became canonical features characterising the Roman matrona.

L’articolo esamina il corpus di araldica studentesca riguardante la Natio Polona allo Studium di Padova, in particolar modo gli stemmi miniati nel volume del registro della Nazione (1592 [ma 1605] – 1745) – dal punto di vista della struttura di queste rappresentazioni, delle insegne ufficiali e dei sostegni o tenenti che vi compaiono (per la maggior parti allegorie di virtù o figure tratte dalla mitologia greco-romana) e del significato che essi, insieme alle massime e ai motti che incorniciano le singole miniature, trasmettono, confrontando tutto ciò con la documentazione prodotta dalle due Nationes Germanicae dei Giuristi (1545–1609, 1650–1709) e degli artisti (1553–1769) e dalla Natio Ultramarina (ovvero greca: 1656–1737). Si potrà quindi osservare che, nella dialettica tra afflato religioso e ispirazione classica che ne emerge, la vera dimensione in cui il primo è messo in pratica è la difesa culturale e militare del cristianesimo, sussunta dal tema della virtus pervasivamente illustrato dai motti e dalle figure che rinviano al secondo.
The paper examines the corpus of student heraldry relating to the Natio Polona at the Studium of Padua – in particular the illuminated coats of arms in the volumes of the National register (1592 (but 1605)–1745) – from the point of view of the structure of these representations, of the official insignia and the supporters or attendants that appear there (mostly allegories of virtues or figures taken from Greco-Roman mythology) and of the meanings that they, together with the maxims and watchwords that frame the individual miniatures, convey, comparing it with the analogous documentation produced by the two Nationes Germanicae of Jurists (1545–1609, 1650–1709) and Artists (1553–1769) and by the Natio Ultramarina (i.e. Greek: 1656–1737). It will thus be observed that, in the dialectic between religious afflatus and classical inspiration that emerges from it, the true dimension in which the former is implemented is the cultural and military defense of Christianity, subsumed by the theme of virtus pervasively illustrated by the mottos and figures that refer to the second.

This article examines defeats and losses as phenomena of an ‘expanded military history’ of Roman History from the Republic to the Principate. It adopts a cultural historical perspective of the military historical phenomenon. “Patterns”and “strategies”are defined, that appear in the sources when dealing with Roman defeats, losses and losers (in particular the commanders or even the emperor himself). Above, the historiography of the Roman imperial period is exemplary examined to see what reasons, interpretations or explanations are given there for suffering a defeat and whether and how these are part of narrative strategies. Sometimes military catastrophes simply were concealed, belittled or reinterpreted. How Rome dealt with defeat tells something about Rome’s society and especially the elite: “Roman culture”or “Rome’s political culture” shaped the way how the military phenomenon of defeat was dealt with. Defeats could also be seen as chances for future victories, they were good for learning and examples for withstanding with the help of morale and disciplina. In the end Rome’s strategies in dealing with such catastrophic events of ‘military history’overall seem to paint the picture of Rome as a resilient socio-political and military system!

Názov článku je pápežským mottom Pia XII., ktoré preberá latinský preklad prorockého textu v Iz 32,17. Pius XII. nastupuje na Petrovu katedru v pohnutých rokoch vypuknutia najväčšieho ozbrojeného konfliktu v dejinách ľudstva. Motto doslovne znamená: „Dielom spravodlivosti je mier“ či „Dôsledkom spravodlivosti je mier“. Príspevok sa pokúsi túto dôsledkovú vetu osvetliť panoramatickým prehľadom vnímania cnosti spravodlivosti v antike, Písme a v morálnej teológii a v jej silnom vplyve na mier vo svetle súčasného magistéria Cirkvi. V prvých dvoch častiach príspevku sa preto pokúsime kontextuálne definovať spravodlivosť z pohľadu morálnej teológie. Opíšeme spravodlivosť z pohľadu mravnej a spoločenskej cnosti, ako aj klasické typologické rozdelenie a pokúsime sa vystopovať fontes, z ktorých čerpá Magistérium. V tretej a štvrtej časti príspevku budeme hovoriť o dôležitosti konceptu spravodlivosti v Písme a magistériu sociálnej náuky Cirkvi a zvláštnu pozornosť zameriame na dôležitosť tohto učenia v ostatnej sociálnej encyklike pápeža Františka Fratelli tutti v snahe o zodpovedanie otázky, či je táto encyklika krokom k spoločnému budovaniu trvalého mieru v duchu predošlého magistéria alebo v nej nachádzame pokus o zrieďovanie hodnôt a krok k vytvoreniu akéhosi svetového globálneho náboženstva, ako by sa niektorí mohli obávať.
The title of this article is a papal motto of Pope Pius XII, which adopts the Latin translation of the prophetic text in Isaiah 32:17. Pius XII ascends the Chair of Peter in the turbulent years of the outbreak of the greatest armed conflict in human history. The motto literally means “The work of justice is peace”, or “The consequence of justice is peace”. This paper will attempt to illuminate this corollary phrase with a panoramic survey of the perception of the virtue of justice in antiquity, Scripture and moral theology and its powerful impact on peace in the light of the contemporary Magisterium of the Church. In the first two parts of this paper, therefore, we will attempt to contextually define justice from the perspective of Moral theology. We will describe justice in terms of moral and social virtue as well as classical typological divisions and attempt to trace the fontes from which the Magisterium draws. In the third and fourth parts of the paper we will discuss the importance of the concept of justice in Scripture and the Magisterium of the Church’s social doctrine, and we will pay particular attention to the importance of this teaching in Pope Francis’ recent social encyclical Fratelli tutti in an attempt to answer the question, whether this encyclical is a step towards building lasting peace together in the spirit of the previous Magisterium, or whether we find in it an attempt to dilute values and a step towards the creation of a kind of world global religion, as some might fear.
