Opis:
Aim. The aim of the research is to examine how Mainland China and Chinese people are represented in the visual materials of four sets of Liberal Studies (LS) textbooks in Hong Kong. Methods. Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis, viewing language as a social practice and van Dijk’s ideological coding categories are integrated to analyze discursive representations (e.g., the embedded hidden power) in the Hong Kong Today volumes published by four influential commercial publishers: Modern, Ming Pao, Marshall, and Aristo. Results. The analysis reveals that China and mainland Chinese are negatively portrayed in visual images in four commercial LS textbooks, in which, the representations concerning mainland China and mainlanders are all found ideologically biased to highlight their negative characteristics and alienness. Conclusions. Via an overview of Hong Kong’s history, economy, educational policies, and controversial political events, the reasons why China and its people are represented negatively in LS textbooks is explained.

Sharply dressed, smooth, and sporty—these are probably among the first attributes associated with the Russian president Vladimir Putin. This image is promoted by television which still remains a powerful medium in Russia. While the annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation in March 2014 initially led to an increase in the popularity of Putin, his approval rating has significantly fallen since the signing of pension reforms in autumn 2018. This could explain why in September 2018 a new talk show called Moskva. Kreml’.Putin, which offers a synopsis of Putin’s working week, began its broadcast. By analyzing the „new“ image of Putin portrayed in this show and comparing it with his visual presentation in the news program Vremia and the annual talk Priamaia Linia s Vladimirom Putinym, the following paper examines the visual portrayal of Putin transmitted on television. By focusing on the visual, the analysis reveals that the president’s image, and the attributes assigned to him, are established and communicated mostly via the content and arrangement of (moving) pictures. Thus, the study suggests that visual communication on television significantly shapes and influences the perception of the Russian president. This work therefore contributes to a better understanding of television in general and of mass media communication in Russia in particular.

Ekranizacja powieści wpisuje się w dyskurs literacki, jej analiza jest jednym ze sposobów ujawnienia osadzonych w dziele intencji autora. W artykule podjęto próbę zbadania, jakie obrazy wizualne łączą powieść Iwana Bahrianego Łowcy tygrysów i film Rostysława Syńki o tym samym tytule. Celem artykułu jest porównanie wizualnych obrazów obu dzieł z uwzględnieniem specyfiki literatury i kina jako rodzajów sztuki oraz określenie przyczyn i roli zmian wprowadzonych przez reżysera. Spośród obrazów wizualnych zwróciłam uwagę na wizerunek pociągu, cechy portretowe postaci, wnętrze i zewnętrze domu Sirków oraz krajobrazy. W wyniku analizy wyciągnęłam następujące wnioski: ekranizacja powieści Łowcy tygrysów niemal dokładnie odtwarza werbalne obrazy wizualne, ale wzmacnia ich ideologię poprzez podkreślenie cech ukraińskich. Reżyser stara się obejść techniczną niemożność oddania malowniczych pejzaży Dalekiego Wschodu i posługuje się stylizacją, wysuwając na pierwszy plan motyw patriotyczny i wątek przygodowy.
The film adaptation of the novel is considered to be a part of the literary discourse, hence its analysis is relevant as one of the disclosure methods of the author’s intentions embedded in the work. The article attempts to decode which visual images unite Ivan Bahrianyi’s novel Tiger Trappers and Rostyslav Synko’s film of the same name. The aim of the article is to compare the visual images of both works, taking into account the specificities of literature and cinema as arts and to determine the causes and role of the changes introduced by the director. Among all the visual images, we focused our attention on the echelon’s image, the characters’ features, the interior and exterior of the Sirko family house, and the landscapes. As a result of the analysis, The following conclusions were reached: the film adaptation of the novel Tiger Trappers almost exactly reproduces the verbal-visual images, but intensifies their ideology due to the Ukrainian features being emphasized. The director tries to circumvent the technical inability to convey the picturesque landscapes of the Far East and resorts to stylization, bringing to the forefront a patriotic motif and an adventure plot.

Sight is the most important sense of a human. For the most of the society, the perception performed by the sight organ is perceived as something very natural. Reflection on life without the sight is not common, which slows down the technological development aiming at reducing the social exclusion of persons with sight disabilities. The dynamical development of advanced technologies does not provide solutions for all the cases of illness. However, many tools exist which allow people with visual disabilities to interact with the outside world. In most cases these tools allow only for the exchange of very basic information. We present some problems associated with the visualization of images for the blind, with the attention concentrated upon business graphics. We also give some propositions to enhance the level of non-visual perception of images with the use of specialized tactile equipment.

Praca koncentruje się konstrukcie jakim jest archiwum. Punktem wyjścia do badań staje się założenie, że jego narracja w pełni kształtowana jest przez przemocową władzę. Za pomocą konkretnych teorii oscylujących wokół pojęć związanych z nauką o kulturze wizualnej, jak i wniknięcia w wybrane zbiory fotografii, autorka próbuje odnaleźć przestrzeń w dominującym dyskursie obrazów, która pozwala na gest wywrotowości w jego obrębie. Głównym przedmiotem przeprowadzonej analizy staje się Atlas Mnemosyne Aby'ego Warburga, które jawi się jako dzieło rewolucyjne, otwarte na wizualny dialog i kontestację.
The work is focused on the structure of the archive. The starting point for research is the assumption. that its narration is shaped by violent power. By means of concrete theories oscillating around concepts connected with the field of visual culture, as well as selected collections of photographs, the author tries to find space in the dominant discourse of images, which allows for a gesture of subversion within it. The main subject of the analysis is Aby Warburg's Atlas Mnemosyne, which appears as a revolutionary work open to visual dialogue and protest.

Opis:
The concept of visual navigation is based on comparing images from navigation sensors with the data stored in the system memory. A control and navigation system based on information from simplified image sensors was developed for smart missiles. The system was based on images acquired by infrared sensors distributed along the rotating line. The system was tested by simulations giving adequate results. In this paper an extension of the system for application to other vehicles is presented. The main advantages of the proposed system are the ruggedness, simplicity and low cost.

In this article, I consider the reception of images that are present in a city space. I focus on the juxtaposition of computer-generated images covering fences surrounding construction sites and the real spaces which they screen from view. I postulate that a visual experience is dependent on input from the other human senses. While looking at objects, we are not only standing in front of them but are being influenced by them. Seeing does not leave a physical trace on the object; instead the interference is more subtle — it influences the way in which we perceive space. Following in the footsteps of Sarah Pink, Michael Taussig and William J. T. Mitchell, I show that seeing (to paraphrase the title of an article by the last of the above mentioned scholars) is a cultural practice. The last part of the article presents a visual essay as a method that can contribute to cultural urban studies. I give as an example of such a method a photo-essay about chosen construction sites in Poznań, which I photographed between December 2014 and June 2015

W artykule omówiono metody fuzji termogramów i obrazów wizyjnych oraz przedstawiono algorytm fuzji bazujący na wykorzystaniu map gradientów temperatury w termogramie. Zaproponowany algorytm fuzji pozwala uwzględnić lokalne, dynamiczne zmiany temperatury. Algorytm map gradientowych dostosowano do termogramów poprzez wprowadzenie modyfikacji polegających na wprowadzeniu informacji obszarowej do algorytmu (rozszerzona maska, dylatacja). Proponowane rozwiązanie porównano z wybranymi istniejącymi metodami. Przeprowadzone eksperymenty zarówno wizualnie, jak i numerycznie wykazują efektywność proponowanego rozwiązania.
The fusion of measurement data includes a description of all the phenomena occurring in the real world by the simultaneous use of sensors of different physical quantities. The fusion of thermal images and visual images based on the use of maps of temperature gradients in the thermal images is presented in the paper. The methods of image fusion can be generally divided into two categories: pixel-based and region-based methods. Algorithms that use simple information about the intensity of pixels or temperature are characterized by the time effectiveness, but as shown in Fig. 2 do not give satisfactory results. A gradient map of temperatures in the thermal images allows for assessment of local, very dynamical changes of temperature, also determines the velocity and direction of changes in the thermal image temperature. A disadvantage of using a gradient map image is its sensitivity to any, even the smallest changes in the temperature. The gradient map algorithm was adapted to the thermal images by the proposed modifications based on the region-based information: gradient map automatic thresholding, expanding of the pixel-region, also morphological operation. The proposed solution was compared with selected methods. The paper also discusses the experimental studies and the results, which allowed evaluating the effectiveness of the developed algorithm.

Współcześnie dialog pomiędzy różnymi podmiotami sceny politycznej oraz życia społecznego staje się coraz bardziej intensywny. Intensywności tej towarzyszą nowe formy wyrażania myśli i idei. Wynikają one z możliwości technologicznych, które kreują nowe platformy wypowiedzi takie jak fora internetowe, media społecznościowe czy nowe tytuły prasowe i kanały telewizyjne. Jednak oprócz nowych miejsc komunikacji pojawiają się także nowe formy prowadzenia dialogu. Jednym z takich narzędzi komunikacji są okładki czasopism. Taki wizualny dialog pomiędzy podmiotami reprezentującymi odmienne wizje i różne oceny rzeczywistości jest ze swej natury uproszczony. Charakteryzuje się stosowaniem czarno-białego świata, czytelnych symboli czy hiperboli. W obrazie zawiera się teza i jednoznaczny przekaz. Towarzyszy temu często ironia i sarkazm. W centrum naszej analizy pragniemy jednak usytuować polityczny dyskurs, jaki dokonuje się pomiędzy dwoma podmiotami operującymi obrazami. Interesuje nas nie tylko wizualny sposób prezentowania przekazu, ale to w jaki sposób kształtowana jest wzajemna obrazowa relacja dwóch czasopism Newsweek i W Sieci. Każde z tych czasopism reprezentuje odmienne poglądy polityczne i inaczej ocenia zdarzenia polityczne. Ów polityczny dialog między czasopismami nasila się szczególnie przy okazji wyborów prezydenckich lub parlamentarnych. Intensyfikuje się wówczas obraz okładek, które wzmacniają perswazyjną
