Opis:: Childhood brain tumour, especially when its treatment begins in early life and causes visual and motor disability, can imply a number of difficulties in spatial orientation, and in cognitive, social and communication areas. The article presents a case study of a 10-year-old boy with low vision. His impairment arose as a consequence of a tumour in deep structures of the right cerebral hemisphere, including the optic chiasm. The aim of the study was to understand how cancer and visual impairment affect the functioning of the boy in question. The study involved the use of tools for functional diagnosis of children with visual impairment. Document analysis, interviewing and observation were also used. The results are consistent with previous studies on the threats to the accomplishment of developmental tasks for children with brain tumour and concomitant neurodevelopmental deficits, as well as reduced psychosocial functioning whose cancer treatment started before the age of 6.

Opis:: The child automatically becomes a member of the peer group when he/she starts school education. The peer group is of great importance for the student’s social development. The student can either gain a position in the group, which will give him a sense of security, or he/she can be rejected by his peers. The article concerns peer relations of children with visual impairments. It presents the conditions of peer relations of children with vision disorders and shows the results of research on the sociometric position of this group of students in the classroom in public and integration schools.

Opis:: People with visual impairment use information from other senses to gain knowledge about the world around them. More and more studies conducted with the participation of visually impaired people indicate that data obtained through auditory perception is extremely important. In this context, the ability of echolocation used by blind people to move independently is interesting. The aim of the article is to present echolocation as a method supporting spatial orientation of people with visual impairment. The article presents the results of empirical studies of echolocation. It also presents the benefits of using this ability in everyday life and signals research projects related to the methodology of teaching echolocation in Poland. People with visually impaired to get knowledge about the world around them use information from other senses. Many studies conducted with the participation of visually impaired people indicate that data obtained through hearing are extremely important. In this context, the ability of echolocation used by blind people to move independently is interesting. The aim of the article is to present echolocation as a method supporting spatial orientation of people with visual disabilities. The article presents the results of empirical studies on echolocation. It also presents the benefits of using this skill in everyday life and signals research projects on the methodology of teaching echolocation in Poland.

Opis:: The aim of the study was to determine whether the age of the audience of the exhibition influences the assessment of aesthetic preferences of artistic products made up by people with visual impairment. The research was conducted to give an answer if there are differences in the preferences of different categories of artworks created by artists who are blind or low vision. The research consisted in the evaluation of raised-line drawings, photographs, sculptures and the tactile picturebook. These artistic products were presented in the art gallery. The assessments were made on a 5-point scale, where the respondents indicated how much they liked the artworks they were watching. In the study participated 118 people, including 80 children and 38 adults. It turned out that age and type of art had an interactive impact on the aesthetic assessment. Age differences in aesthetic preference werefound in reference to drawings and picture books. The visual art created by people with sight impairment was evaluated very positively.

Opis:: Higher education allows people with disabilities to build self-realization and self-esteem. It prevents social exclusion, redeems deficiencies and increases the chances to find a job. For over 10 years the number of students with disabilities has been increasing in Poland. Students with visual impairment (blind and partially sighted) are included in this group. One of the barriers they face in the academic environment is difficulty of reaching the accessible form of educational materials. Rapidly developing assistive technologies allow them to overcome this barrier. Collections of digital documents addressed to students with visual impairment are helpful in this context. The aim of the article is to give a description of Polish digital libraries addressed to visually impaired students and their role in higher education. To collect necessary data websites of all (96) Polish public higher schools subordinated to the Ministry of Science and Higher Education were analysed. Important information the author acquired also came from individuals involved in building digital resources targeted at students with visual impairment. The methods of literature analysis and criticism were also used. Study has shown that only a few public higher schools participate in projects on establishing digital collections accessible for students with disabilities. These collections are getting richer every year.

Opis:: The paper deals with the area of the technical solution of the information and navigation system intended for persons with visual impairment. The first part is focused on the transfer of information concerned using the conductivity properties of the human body as a transmission channel. This principle is referred to as Personal Area Network (PAN). The principle used of data transmission through the human body can be implemented in several specific applications. The second part of the paper addresses the area of navigation for persons with visual impairment to ensure their easier orientation in an unknown terrain. This part is focused on the navigation of the visually impaired, for their easier orientation in unknown areas. The technical navigation system, whose hardware is integrated into the standard stick for the blind, is based on the principle of a digital analysis of a signal from the magnetometer. The analyzed signal occurs by moving the stick over surface-distributed neodymium magnets, which, with their distribution and orientation of magnetic poles, creates basic orientation pictograms. The conclusion of the paper describes the design of an information and navigation system that the authors have practically implemented and tested.

Opis:: “Blind football” was initiated in the last century. What has significantly contributed to its development are newly established organizations, the primary goal of which was to manage various forms of activating people with visual impairment. Popularisation of “blind football” is a long-term, complicated process, in which a plethora of factors are involved. Opis:: The aim of this article is to identify significant determinants of emancipation of persons with visual impairment. Ridding oneself of restrictions, stereotypes, and even violence affecting various spheres of functioning of a blind adult is crucial to the mdevelopment and consolidation of his/her subjectivity. It is assumed that conscious autonomy of visually impaired people, enabling and conditioning performance of the tasks related to adulthood, requires independence in orientation and mobility, independence in carrying out activities of daily living, easy access to information and opportunities to communicate, undertaking satisfying professional activities as well as rewarding family, social and cultural activities. Developing subjectivity and autonomy in adulthood requires support from the family, as well as well-planned and consistently implemented educational and rehabilitation activities. The process of expanding autonomy of an individual can take place in relationship to the emancipation process of the group. One example is the activities of foundations run by visually impaired persons, whose main purpose is promoting dignified living of the blind.

Opis:: The ability of some humans to echolocate has become widely known primarily due to a small number of famous expert echolocators who are capable of extraordinary feats. However, a lesser-known fact is that all humans exhibit this skill unconsciously and can learn it relatively quickly and implicitly through repeated practice. In our experiments we tested groups of 12 blind and 14 sighted untrained participants in a simple echolocation test - localizing a 1m x 2m vertical wall at distances between 1 and 3 meters using 10 different types of sounds as the source signals for the echolocation attempts. There were significant differences between the participant groups and between some of the tested sounds. Although the groups were small, a clear difference was also observed between the experienced totally blind participants and the legally blind visually impaired participants that had residual light sensitivity. From the compared sounds 3 kHz and 4 kHz synthetic percussion sounds, pink and blue noise were among the sources that led to the highest chances of correctly guessing the obstacle’s direction and distance.

Opis:: Personal resources are an important factor contributing to health and the quality of life. Their role is even greater in difficult situations, such as the ones experienced by individuals with visual and auditory impairments/deficits. The research was to diagnise personal resources of adults with isual and auditory impairments/deficits. These resources were analysed in terms of the meanig of life, self-assessment, and social support. Research was conducted with 80 respondents aged 20-30, where 40 respondents were visually impaired, and 40 respondents were auditorily impaired. Instruments used: The Meanig of Life Scale by J.C. Crumbaugh and K.T. Maholicka, A Questionnaire of Social Support by J.S. Norbeck, a Self-Assessment Scale by W.H. Fitts, and author’s own questionnarie. Research findings reveal certain divergences between groups in terms of the analysed resources, with the most significant ones in the sphere of self-assessment.
