Opis:: The dynamic development of the visual culture requires a revised approach and thinking about its role in didactic process and its presence in scientific research. The key goals of the author’s scientific interest in the different aspects of the visual aspect are as follows: to join the discussion on if and how to utilize photography in research on education, to rework the selected imaging techniques and analytical methods in this very context, and to carry out an interpretation of the visual material. Opis:: The main objectives of the long-term research, the partial results of which are presented in this paper, were related, among other things, to identification of the influence of experimental artwork classes on children’s artistic skills. The adopted research method based on analysis and interpretation of artworks regarding their compositional modality turned out to be the factor unmasking the difficulty in assessing children’s artworks. Therefore, the paper presents fragmentary results of complex research and demonstrates the divergence of marks given by a group of competent judges who used a structured tool.

Opis:: W zrozumieniu szerszego kontekstu społecznego palenia tytoniu ważne jest znalezienie nowych metod utrudnienia rozwoju tożsamości palacza. Autorzy opracowali metodę Picture Based Recognition of Smokers (PBRS), aby zrozumieć społeczne i wizualne wyznaczniki powstawania tożsamości nastoletnich palaczy. Różnice w charakterystyce osób palących i niepalących otrzymane po zastosowaniu tradycyjnego kwestionariusza tekstowego i PBRS porównano, korzystając z analizy dyskryminacyjnej przeprowadzonej za pomocą tzw. comparison clouds oraz korelogramów. Przy użyciu analizy permutacyjnej oraz regresji przetestowano możliwości przewidywania palenia przez młodych. Wyniki uzyskane przy użyciu Word Cloud potwierdziły, że interpretacje wyznaczników wizualnej identyfikacji obrazów są różne u osób niepalących i palaczy. Stwierdzono, że z pomocą metody PBRS można skuteczniej wskazać różnice niż przy użyciu tradycyjnych kwestionariuszy tekstowych. Opracowana metoda pozwala na rozwój interwencji, która nie stygmatyzuje nastolatków jej poddanych.

Opis:: Artykuł prezentuje podstawowe założenia dotyczące dylematów etycznych w wykorzystujących fotografię badaniach biograficznych. Punktem wyjścia jest wskazanie na tradycję wykorzystania fotografii w badaniach biograficznych oraz wyszczególnienie specyficznych cech kultury wizualnej w kontekście badań biograficznych. Następnie opisane zostają główne dylematy etyczne badań wizualnych – świadoma zgoda oraz procesy anonimizacji. Zostają one skonfrontowane z opartymi na wynikach badań empirycznych dylematami użytkowników fotografii jako medium zachowywania i komunikowania biografii.
The paper presents basic assumptions concerning ethical dilemmas in biographical research using photography. The starting point is the indication of tradition of using photography in biographical research and the specification of features of visual culture in the context of biographical research. Then the main ethical dilemmas of visual research are described – informed consent and anonymisation processes. They are confronted with dilemmas based on empirical research results that arise from the users of photography as a medium for preserving and communicating biography.

Opis:: In the age of globalization, employees are required to adapt themselves to changes inthe working world. Employees change their working placesquite often; therefore, they have less stability in the organizations they work in. This situation might influence their general attitudes toward the organizations and particularly their personal perceptions about their organizational positions. In turn,this affects their motivation, loyalty, health etc. The aim:To present three studies which were carried out in three distinct periods of time regarding Israeli employees’ perceptions of their organizational positions, incorporating a new visual method developed by the author.The population included technology managers, registered hospital nurses and educators. The common research methods (questionnaires and interviews) facilitate the examination of visible attitudes but are less effective for those which are hidden. The visual method was based on the drawing of a fruit tree, and suggested an indirect way of exploring the participants’ attitudes. Results and conclusion: The participants’ interpretations raised a diversity of themes about their organizational positions, depending on the type of organization and their stability in the workplace. This enabledthe gaining of a deep level of knowledgeaboutthe employees’ attitudes in an indirect way.

Opis:: The presented research is a microethnographic report from a visual ethnography undertaken in May 2016, in 6 Japanese schools and 1 adult support center with disabilities located on island Kyushu in Fukuoka Prefecture. The study deals with a issues of the educational material culture and refers to the study of space and school artifacts designed in schools for students with special educational needs – understood as intellectual disabilities and for adults with such potential as well. The research was grounded in E. Schein’s organizational culture, furthermore on the concept of private space and public space described by T. Tamura and my author’s concept developed at the reinterreted role of the handicapped human in stationary institution published by W. Wolfensberger’s (1969).

Opis:: Celem artykułu jest usystematyzowanie wiedzy dotyczącej techniki badawczej wywiadu fotograficznego (photo-elicitation interview) oraz przedstawienie funkcji pełnionych przez zdjęcia w trakcie korzystania z tej techniki. Punktem wyjścia są dylematy terminologiczne oraz założenia teoretyczno-metodologiczne wywiadu fotograficznego, ze szczególnym zwróceniem uwagi na cztery charakterystyczne dla tej techniki cechy/procesy: angażowanie, strukturyzowanie, urefleksyjnianie, wyobrażeniowość. Następnie zaprezentowane zostają możliwe źródła, z których pochodzą zdjęcia wykorzystywane w wywiadach fotograficznych: zastane, wykonane przez badacza, posiadane przez badanych, wykonane przez badanych. Dyskusji poddane zostają również różnice w przebiegu wywiadu w zależności od korzystania ze zdjęć materialnych lub cyfrowych. Te rozważania zostają rozszerzone o doświadczenia autora z projektów badawczych wykorzystujących technikę wywiadu fotograficznego. Wskazane zostają cztery możliwe funkcje pełnione przez zdjęcia w wywiadach: wyjaśnianie, uczulanie, kontekstualizacja, mediowanie.
This article aims to systematize the knowledge on photo-elicitation interview research technique and to present the possible functions of pictures in this technique. Terminology dilemmas, as well as theoretical and methodological assumptions of photo-elicitation interviews are the starting point of the article. Particular attention is paid to four features/processes specific for this research technique: engaging, structuring, reflexivity, imaginary. Then the possible sources of pictures used in photo-elicitation interviews are presented: from secondary sources, made by the researcher, owned by participants, made by participants. Differences in using material and digital pictures in interviews are also discussed. These considerations are extended by the author’s experiences from research projects, which used the photo-elicitation research technique. Four possible functions of pictures in interviews are described: explaining, alerting, contextualization, mediating.

Opis:: Artykuł przedstawia ogólny zarys teorii i praktyki badań wizualnych w edukacji. Przybliża etnografię wizualną jako jedną z dostępnych metodologii badawczych oraz wybrane techniki zbierania danych. Próba prześledzenia zastosowań metodologii wizualnej wskazuje, że obrazy mogą stanowić podstawę analizy poglądów społecznych i kulturowych oraz procesu postrzegania zjawisk przez uczniów, studentów, nauczycieli, edukatorów czy członków innych społeczności związanych z edukacją. Poruszone zostały także kwestie etyczne związane z publikowaniem danych wizualnych, takie jak anonimowość czy zakres wynegocjowanej konstrukcji znaczeniowej. W głównych refleksjach podkreślono znaczenie etnografii wizualnej jako kluczowej metodologii pozyskiwania bogatych danych, które umożliwiają dostęp do przestrzeni edukacyjnych, jak również znaczenie technik partycypacyjnych w gromadzeniu danych oraz roli technologii jako niezaprzeczalnego „uczestnika” procesu badawczego.
This article provides an overview of the theory and practice of visual research in education. It introduces visual ethnography as one of the available research methodologies and selected data collection techniques. The attempt to trace the applications of visual methodology shows that images can be the basis for analyzing social and cultural views and the process of perceiving phenomena by pupils, students, teachers, educators or members of other communities related to education. Ethical issues related to the publication of visual data, such as anonymity or the scope of the negotiated construction of meaning, are also addressed. The main reflections highlighted the importance of visual ethnography as a key methodology for capturing rich data to access educational spaces, as well as the importance of participatory techniques in data collection and the role of technology as an undeniable “participant” in the research process.

Opis:: The aim of this paper is to present the basic ethical dilemmas in the creation and functioning of visual databases in the social sciences. The author starts from the assumption that social research is a form of power and therefore requires regulation in regard to its methods and the management of the collected empirical material. Three main dimensions of the ethics of visual research are presented: in-formed consent; anonymity and confidentiality; and presentation, dissemination and anonymization. The author discusses these dimensions in regard to proposals for the creation of open databases under the Horizon 2020 Open Research Data project and then presents his own proposals concerning matters of importance in creating visual databases.
