Opis:
In this study white mustard (Sinapis alba) plants were allowed to grow in earthen pots, treated with municipal solid waste compost (MSWC) to study the effect of MSWC on the plant biomass production. Twenty-one days from the establishment of the experiment sprouts and the number of growing plants occurring in the earthen pots were counted. Plants growing in the earthen pots with the compost samples exhibited an increasing plant biomass while no changes were observed in their appearance; retarded growth or necrotic changes were not recorded. The performed phytotoxicity tests show that the analyzed composts produced in the composting plant situated on the landfill surface achieved high percentages of the germinating capacity of white mustard (Sinapis alba) seeds and can be therefore used in the subsequent reclamation of the concerned landfill.

Opis:
Municipal waste management in Poland has continuously changed over the past years regarding collection systems and disposal processes. After joining the EU, the approach to waste management changed dramatically, intensifying selective collection and implementing recovery and treatment processes. Recent years have shown that a further fundamental overhaul in the waste sector is needed to convert the sector to a closed-loop economy. These challenges are appearing in Poland, forcing actions in which the efficiency of the waste stream management system should generate added value in the form of sourced raw materials, materials and products. The waste generated should be managed following the waste hierarchy, in which disposal is the least desirable process. The work aims to analyse the current state of municipal waste management in Poland concerning applicable legal requirements, waste management hierarchy and the use of the best available technologies. The data from the analysis was used to determine where Poland is currently, heading towards transforming to a circular economy in the technological, social, environmental and economic areas. The research results showed the need to reduce the waste generated, including a significant reduction in the amount of waste stored in landfills and a significant increase in the recycling rates of municipal waste. In this context, supporting the transition to a closed-loop economy is essential in creating a low-carbon, recycling and innovative waste management, implementing EU strategies.

Opis:
The article presents the data based on the long-term observations of the Lomonosov mine tailing storage impact on the natural environment. The study of the chemical, mineral and phase composition of waste, sampled at the tailing site, was carried out. It was determined that the ore beneficiation waste in the Lomonosov deposit is generally represented by the minerals of the smectite group. According to the X-ray diffraction analysis data, the beneficiation wastes are a bi-mineral mixture of montmorillonite and talc with pyrophyllite impurities. The wastes of this composition are potentially magnesia raw materials used in the production of construction materials, such as cement, ceramic bricks, etc. Experimental studies have justified the use of the method of wastes recycling based on the roasting of the ore beneficiation tailings, with the number of process options, depending on the temperature regimes and the exposure time.

Opis:
As a part of the study on recycling Li(NCM)O2 lithium-ion battery scraps, solvent extraction experiments were performed using different extraction agents such as PC88A, Cyanex272 and D2EHPA to separate Co, Ni and Mn from the leaching solution. When the ratio of Mn to Ni was about 0.4 in the leaching solution, the separation factor for Co and Mn was found to be less than 10 so that the separation of Co and Ni was insufficient. When solvent extraction was done using the solution with the lower Mn/Ni ratio of 0.05 where Mn was removed by potassium permanganate and chlorine dioxide, more than 99% of Mn could be extracted through five courses of extraction using 30vol% D2EHPA while the extraction rates of Co and Ni were around 17% and 11%, respectively. In the case that Mn was removed from the solution, the extraction rate of Co was higher than 99% whereas less than 7% Ni was extracted using Cyanex272 suggesting that Co and Ni elements were effectively separated.

Opis:
Leaching solutions of printed circuit boards (PCBs) contain noble and base metal ions. The precious metal ions present in the leaching solutions of PCBs could be separated by cementation with copper metal. After recovery of precious metal ions by cementation, the filtrate contains Cu(II) together with base metal ions like Al(III), Fe(III), Fe(II), Ni(II), Sn(II), and Zn(II). In this work, separation experiments were conducted to recover Cu(II) and Ni(II) from the filtrate. First, copper ions were completely separated from the filtrate by chemical reduction with hydrazine at the following conditions: a molar ratio of 8 for hydrazine to Cu(II), 20°C, 500 rpm, and 20 mins. By adding sodium oxalate to the solution after separation of Cu(II), most of the Ni(II) and 38% of the Zn(II) were co-precipitated at 20°C, 60 mins, 500 rpm, and a molar ratio of 20 for sodium oxalate to nickel. After dissolving the coprecipitates of Ni(II) and Zn(II) oxalates in a 0.5 M HCl solution, the Zn(II) was completely removed from the solution by a five-stage cross-current extraction with 2.5 M Cyanex 272. Nickel hydroxides were then recovered from the raffinate by precipitation with NaOH. The purity of the copper metal and nickel hydroxides was higher than 99%. A process was proposed to recover Au(III), Pd(II), Cu(II), and Ni(II) from the leaching solutions of PCBs.

Opis:
The increasing mass of organic waste as well as the assumptions of a circular economy enforce the rational management of this type of waste. One method of recycling is composting, which makes it possible to use waste efficiently as an organic fertilizer. This paper presents the results of a comparative study of six different composts in terms of their agricultural quality. The aim of this study was to evaluate the bioavailable amounts of metals using single extractions with DTPA solution and to characterize various humic compounds. Particular attention was paid to the amounts of labile carbon (LC), hot water-extractable carbon (HWC), and the quantity and quality of humus substances (HS). Regardless of compost types, they were characterized by a small share of easily decomposable compounds such as fulvic acids (FAs), LC, and HWC, which may indicate the low susceptibility of compost humic substances to microbiological degradation in soil. In general, the bioavailable metal amounts found in the analyzed composts were low; therefore, the tested composts applied to the soil can be considered safe for the environment.

Opis:
The oil industry is characterized by an intense impact on the environment, which inevitably causes its change. In the production process, the existing state of the environment in the territories of industrial facilities is completely or partially disturbed. Today, the result of the negative environmental impact of the fuel and energy industry on the nature of the regions of northern Russia has resulted in millions of tons of drilling and oil production waste stored in sludge pits and causing colossal damage to the atmosphere, hydro- and lithosphere of the country’s oil-producing territories. The aim of this work is to improve the technological process of utilization of drilling waste in the fields with the receipt of an inert building material that does not have a negative impact on the components of the natural environment. In the course of work, based on the analysis of the proposed disposal methods, the most optimal option was selected and a technology for disposal of drilling waste at an oil field was developed, a situational map of the object was presented, and an estimate of the cost of the proposed disposal technology was carried out. Based on the results of the work carried out, a conclusion was made about the effectiveness of the utilization technology under consideration, since it was revealed a decrease in the amount of generated and accumulated waste, a decrease in the costs of maintaining and reclamation of waste accumulation / disposal facilities.
