Opis:
Field investigation was carried out to study the genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance and the variability studies showed significant differences among the thirty genotypes for all the thirteen characters. Yield per plant was maximum in CL 4 genotype collected from Atchirupakkam in Villupuram district. The characters viz., number of vines per plant, sex ratio, days to first female flowers, node number of first female flower, days to fruit maturity and number of fruits per plant were recorded the maximum in the same genotype. Genetic analysis indicated maximum phenotypic and genotypic coefficient of variation for single fruit weight and 100 seed weight. The characters viz., fruits diameter, flesh thickness, number of fruits per plant and yield per plant, recorded highest estimate of PCV and moderate estimation of GCV. The characters viz., number of seeds per fruits, flesh thickness, number of primary branches and fruit diameter recorded moderate estimate of PCV and GCV. Lower estimation of GCV was observed for sex ratio, fruit length and number of male and female flowers. High heritability (broad sense) was observed for 100 seed weight, number of seeds per fruit, single fruit weight, vine length, fruit diameter, fruit length, flesh thickness, number of male flowers, sex ratio, yield per plant, number of primary branches per plant, number of female flowers and number of fruits per plant. Based on mean performance, CL 4 followed by CL 22 and CL 10 were selected as the best genotypes in watermelon for the costal ecosystem, by virtue of their higher yield combined with desirable component characters.

Opis:
Citrullus colocynthis (L.) Schrad. (Watermelon) belongs to Cucurbitaceae family. Watermelon can be correctly referred as either fruit or vegetable. The watermelon has attracted attention of many researchers due to various kinds of its medicinal properties. A watermelon has basically four parts as rind, white flesh, red flesh and seed. There are a number of varieties of watermelon in which the central ripped part may be dark red, light red, pink, or yellow. The new variety is watermelon is also available without seed or very few seed called seedless watermelon. In the present investigation the dark red flesh variety of watermelon was chosen. Ca, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn and Zn were investigated in rind, white flesh, dark red flesh and seed. It was found interesting that the amount of calcium (Ca) in all these four parts was very high and highest in the white flesh (unripped) of watermelon.

Opis:
Border trade is the main export channel for agricultural products from Myanmar (formerly Burma). With an increasing quantity and value of exports during the last few decades, melons have become one of the major crops in the national export strategy of Myanmar. In this paper, the word “melons” is used to represent both watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) and muskmelon (Cucumis melo) cultivars. No previous research exists on price transmission between these countries, especially for the horticultural produce market. This study aims to measure the magnitude and speed of spatial price adjustment in melons exported from Myanmar to China. Price transmission in the melon export market in Myanmar is analyzed by studying the lead-lag relationship among prices in the border market in Myanmar and the selected wholesale markets in Beijing, China, using a vector autoregressive model (VAR). Prices are transmitted quickly from Myanmar to the selected wholesale markets in Beijing, China. The wholesale market price in Beijing, China lags only one day behind the Myanmar price. In the Myanmar border market, the melon price is affected only by its own lagged price. The adjustment of melon prices in one day suggests that market information is getting passed up the market channel, and there does not appear to be a need for a policy to improve market efficiency.

Opis:
The fatty acid profile of vegetable oil from seeds of egusi melon (Cucumeropsis mannii Naudin) and watermelon (Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsum. & Nakai) collected from a local market in Imo State, Nigeria, were analyzed using the GC-MS technique. The study revealed the presence of six (6) fatty acids in each seed oil. Four fatty acids and three fatty acid methyl esters were detected. A total of five (5) similar fatty acids (three (3) saturated and two (2) unsaturated) were detected in both oil, and both seed oils contained one fatty acid not detected in the other. The percentage (%) concentration of saturated fatty acids compounds detected in both oil include Pentadecanoic acid methyl ester (EMO: 4.91; WMO: 4.43), Octadecanoic acid (Stearic acid) (EMO: 3.64; WMO: 41.77), and Methyl heptacosanoate (EMO: 39.16; WMO: 1.32) while the (%) concentration of unsaturated fatty acids detected in both oils includes 11-octadecenoic acid, methyl ester, (EMO: 46.05; WMO:46.28) and Oleic acid (EMO: 4.48; WMO: 3.97). Eicosanoic acid, methyl ester was detected at a concentration of 1.77% in Egusi melon seed oil alone while watermelon seed oil detected n-Hexadecanoic acid at a concentration of 2.22%. The fatty acid profiling of both seed oil revealed fatty acid compounds with therapeutic abilities. This study has provided the scientific backing for the therapeutic uses of both oil and also has compared both oil and predicts a future substitution of both oil in future utilization and at the same time influence their acceptability by the consumers.

Opis:
This study was aimed at determining the optimum yield of bioethanol (as biofuel and industrial chemical) from yam, potato, watermelon and pineapple peels using different concentrations of hydrochloric acid (HCl). Results obtained from acid hydrolysis, fermentation and distillation revealed that yam peel gave the highest quantity of glucose (38.7±0.90%) and ethanol (18.40±0.18%) at an acid concentration of 1.5M, watermelon peel equally recorded a highest yield of glucose (18.3±0.50%) and ethanol (8.35±0.14%) at 1.5M. For potato peel, the highest quantity of glucose (33.8±1.10%), and ethanol (18.23±0.04%) was at 2.0M, this concentration (2.0M) was equally the optimum for pineapple peel, the highest glucose concentration and ethanol yield of which was 24.5±0.62% and 11.44±0.29% respectively. Utilizing these agro-wastes for the production of bioethanol provides a means of recycling these biological wastes which are normally prone to rapid microbial spoilage.

Opis:
The nutritive value and terapeuthic activity of watermelon seeds is known, but up to day no studies on isolation and characterisation of their melanin were conducted. The aim of the study was to evaluate the antioxidant, antibacterial and light barrier properties of raw and purified melanins isolated from watermelon seeds. Native melanin was isolated from seeds by alkaline extraction. Obtained pigment was purified by acid hydrolysis. Chemical tests and FT-IR analysis were conducted to determine the melanin nature of the isolated pigments. UV-Vis, transmittance and colour properties were evaluated spectrophotometrically. Antioxidant activity was determined using ABTS and antibacterial activity through a well diffusion method. The results of the study demonstrated that melanins isolated from watermelon seeds had antioxidant, light barrier and antibacterial properties. A purified form of melanin had higher antioxidant activity and light barrier properties than the raw form. Both melanins inhibited the growth of Enterococcus faecalis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Watermelon seeds may be considered as a promising source of natural melanin which possess remarkable therapeutic action that can support the traditional use of this plant in the ethnomedicine.
Otrzymany pigment został oczyszczony w wyniku hydrolizy kwasowej.

Opis:
The aim of this study is to evaluate the potential of Citrullus lanatus seeds (a natural coagulant) also known as Watermelon seeds in treating Yamuna River Water. The problem of water scarcity in developing nations requires an economical and feasible water treatment process like coagulation. The watermelon seeds were analyzed on different physicochemical water treatment parameters. To understand the efficiency of the coagulant; a jar test was conducted by varying dosage, mixing speed, pH, and temperature. At an optimum coagulant dosage of 250 mg/L, pH of 7, stirring speed of 100 rpm, and temperature of 30 °C, the maximum turbidity removal of 81% was observed. The study concludes that the Citrullus lanatus seeds can be used as an effective natural coagulant for water treatment in developing countries.
