Opis:
After nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, sulfur is another essential element that is required for the optimal growth, development and yield of white mustard and other species of the family Brassicaceae. The effect of different pre-sowing sulfur fertilizer doses on the glucosinolate content and profile of three traditional white mustard cultivars that are widely grown in Poland was analyzed in a three-year, small-area field experiment. White mustard was grown in the experimental fields of the Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences in south-western Poland in 2007-2009. The experiment had a split-plot design with two levels of experimental factors. White mustard cultivar (Metex, Nakielska, Radena) was the first experimental factor, and sulfur fertilizer dose (0, 10, 20, 30 S kg ha-1) was the second experimental factor. The glucosinolate content of white mustard seeds was analyzed by gas chromatography. White mustard seeds were most abundant in sinalbin, an aromatic glucosinolate. The sinalbin content of seeds varied in response to different sulfur fertilizer doses. An increase in the sinalbin concentration was observed already in response to a sulfur dose of 10 kg ha-1 relative to the control treatment. The total content of aliphatic glucosinolates was significantly lowest in the treatment where sulfur fertilization was not applied. The content of aliphatic glucosinolates in white mustard seeds was significantly highest in the treatment fertilized with sulfur at 20 kg ha-1. Weather conditions significantly influenced the total glucosinolate content and the proportions of the analyzed glucosinolate groups in white mustard seeds.

Opis:
White mustard plant (Sinapis alba L.) is an easy-to-grow species with low soil requirements and is often sown as a catch crop in Northern Europe to reduce nitrate leaching, especially during the winter. There are studies showing the high nutritional value of mustard seeds, which have a wide application, mainly in food production. Still little is known about the young shoots or plants of different cultivars of white mustard, although in Asian countries, eating them raw is quite common. The aim of the research was to determine the proximate composition, antioxidant activity and polyphenolic compound content in young green plants of the Polish cultivars of white mustard: Borowska (traditional, with a high content of erucic acid and glucosinolates), Bamberka (non-erucic with glucosinolates) and Warta (non-erucic with low glucosinolates content; double-improved). Young plants were harvested in three terms. The first harvest took place at the plover stadium and the next ones at 7-day intervals (31, 38 and 45 day after sowing). In freeze-dried plant material, proximate composition and antioxidant activity with the ABTS and FRAP methods, as well as phenolic compound content, were measured. The highest concentration of protein was measured in cultivars Warta and Borowska after 31 and 38 days of sowing. Harvest time and cultivar affected antioxidant activity and total polyphenol content in young mustard plants. Thirty-eight days after sowing, the examined cultivars of the young plants of mustard had the highest antioxidant activity and total polyphenolic compound content. Green young mustard plants have strong antioxidant properties at the basic level, they are classified as functional foods and are similar to other edible leafy plants such as celery, spinach and Brussels sprouts.

Opis:
The simplification of crop rotation systems, an increase in the concentration of cultivated cereals, and intensification of animal production in litter-free farms have drastically reduced the pig manure production. The consequences include negative organic matter balance and considerable leaching of mineral components from fields. The objective of this paper is to assess the effect of high doses of pig slurry on plants, and to analyse the ionic balance of white mustard. The experiment was conducted in four replications. Test plots were treated with pig slurry at doses of 0, 30, 60, and 90 tonnes fresh mass per hectare. Then, white mustard was sown. After the harvest, the plant material was separated into grains, husks, and stalks. The following were determined in the organic material: total nitrogen, cations (Ca, Mg, K, Na), phosphorus, and total organic acids. The ionic composition of particular parts of plants showed considerable differences associated with different life functions of these plant organs. In grains and stalks of mustard, the ratio of bivalent (Ca+Mg) to monovalent cations (K+Na) showed no considerable variations and was approximate to one. It was only in husks that bivalent cations were three times more abundant that monovalent cations. A considerable increase in yields was observed with an increase in pig slurry doses. The analysis showed the highest accumulation of Ca and K in husks, and the accumulation of mostly N, P, and Mg in grains. During the crop cultivation, approximately 20% of nutrients absorbed by plants from the soil are removed in the form of useful yield, that is grains. The remaining plant parts are ploughed as organic matter, providing nutrients to successive crops through its slow mineralisation over several years.

Opis:
A new bio-polyol based on white mustard oil (Synapis alba) and 2,2’-mercaptodiethanol (2,2’-MDE) was obtained. The synthesis was carried out by two-step method. In the first stage, the double bond of the unsaturated fatty acid residues was oxidized, and in the second step the epoxy rings were opened with 2,2’-MDE. The properties of the obtained bio-polyol for application as raw material in polyurethane-polyisocyanurate foams (PUR-PIR) - hydroxyl number, acid number, density, viscosity, pH, water content, FTIR, 1 H NMR and 13 :C NMR were investigated. Based on the obtained results, foaming formulations containing 0 to 0.6 R of the new bio-polyol were prepared. Signifi cant impact of bio-polyol on apparent density, compressive strength, brittleness, flammability, water absorption and thermal conductivity of polyurethane composites were noted. Modified foam had better functional properties than reference foam e.g. lower brittleness, better thermal insulation properties and better fire resistance.

Opis:
The object of research was the soil from an orchard after 27 years of apple cultivation, showing signs of fatigue re-sulting in weaker growth of apple seedlings planted into it, and the soil sampled on the same farm, but not used for growing fruit trees. The physicochemical properties of both soils did not differ significantly. In sick soil, no pathogens of fungal or fungi-like origin were found, and the number of nematodes was below the threshold of economic threat. There is a suspicion that abiotic fac-tors could be responsible for soil fatigue. It has been demonstra-ted that the cultivation of spring and winter wheat, triticale and white mustard before planting apple ‘Antonovka’ seedlings, had a positive impact on their growth. The best effect was obtained after the cultivation of white mustard or after the introduction of mustard seed meal into the soil, which was also confirmed by measurements of the intensity of apple seedlings photosynthesis. The cultivation of these phytosanitary plants or the addition of mustard seed meal positively influenced the biological potential of the soil expressed by a significant increase in the population of bacteria from the genera Pseudomonas and Bacillus. There was also a very large increase in the number of Trichoderma spp. fun-gi after the addition of mustard seed meal into the soil and winter wheat cultivation.

Opis:
The object of research was to determine the impact of broad bean coordinate cultivation (Vicia faba L.), Bartek variety, with a white mustard (Sinapis alba L.) in two row spacing on the dynamics of feeding among imagines of pea leaf weevil (Sitona spp.). The investigations were conducted in the years 2014 and 2015 at the Experimental Station of the University of Agriculture, in Prusy near Cracow. The field experiment comprised the following objects: broad bean, Bartek cv. in pure culture, sown at standard 50 cm x 15 cm spacing (V); broad bean spaced 65 cm x 15 cm with white mustard as the crop intersown between the rows (V+S65); broad bean spaced 80 cm x 15 cm with white mustard as above (V+S80) and broad bean in pure culture, sown at standard 50 cm x 15 cm spacing, but chemically protected with insecticides Fastac 100 EC and Decis 2,5 EC (V ch). The evaluation of the feeding intensity of adult pea weevils was conducted on 25 randomly selected plants from each plot, by measuring the surface area of eaten leaves, counting injured and non-injured leaves and calculating the loss of leaf blade as the result of their feeding. The cultivation of broad bean with a white mustard in row spacing of 80 cm contributed significantly to the reduction in a degree of broad bean leaves damage by pea leaf weevil beetles. The use of smaller spacing - 65 cm limited the area of feeds but only in one of the research seasons. The effectiveness of broad bean protection through cultivation with a white mustard is a few times lower than for chemical protection.
Obejmowało ono następujące obiekty: bób odmiany Bartek wysiewany jako uprawa jednorodna w rozstawie standardowej 50 cm x 15 cm (V); bób uprawiany współrzędnie z gorczycą białą w rozstawie 65 cm x 15 cm (V+S65); bób uprawiany współrzędnie z gorczycą białą w rozstawie 80 cm x 15 cm(V+S80); bób wysiewany jako uprawa jednorodna w rozstawie standardowej 50 cm x 15 cm, chroniony chemicznie insektycydami Fastac 100 EC i Decis 2,5 EC (V ch).

Opis:
Stigmas isolated from flower buds of ‘Nakielska’ variety of Sinapis alba were used to develop a micropropagation method suitable for breeding of new cultivars. The origin of adventitious bud regeneration was studied on MS medium, under stimulation by bezylaminopurine (BAP) in combination with 2,4-D - naphtoxy acetic acid (2,4-D). Histological analysis showed the structure of Sinapis stigma (composed from four types of tissue: papillae, transmitting tissue, parenchyma and vascular bundles) and revealed that numerous meristematic centers developed from parenchyma cells in close vicinity of vascular bundles. Buds very quickly appeared on the surface of initial explants and later formed multiplantlets that were easily rooted in the soil.

Opis:
In a one-year pot experiment the effect of waste elementary sulphur on the following parameters was observed: 1. on the chemical composition of mustard plants during the growing season, 2. on the yield of seeds, straw and oil, 3. on the chemical composition of seeds and 4. on the content of the water-soluble sulphur in the soil after the harvest. Elemental sulphur was obtained as a waste material of petroleum refining and was incorporated into a 15-15-15 NPK fertiliser where it comprised 4%. The experiment had the following variants: 1) control (unfertilised); 2) NPK 1; 3) NPK 2; 4) NPKS 1; 5) NPKS 2. The smaller dose amounted to 3.3 g, the higher one to 6.7 g of the fertiliser per pot (6 kg of soil). Moreover all variants were performed in 2 different soils - a medium soil with neutral pH value and a heavy one with alkali pH value. At the stage of 6 true leaves, the content of nitrogen in plants increased in accordance with its dose. Simultaneously, sulphur applied in the NPKS fertiliser improved nitrogen utilization. The difference between the variants fertilised with NPK and the variants with NPKS amounted to 38.9% in the neutral medium soil, whereas in the alkali heavy soil it was as low as 1.4%. The yield of both seed and straw in the fertilised variants was statistically significantly higher than in the unfertilised control variant. However, there were observed no statistically significant differences between the variants with sulphur and the variants without sulphur although both the yield of the seed and straw in the variants with NPKS was higher than in the variants with NPK. The application of elemental sulphur into the neutral medium soil increased the concentration of both nitrogen and sulphur in the mustard seed in comparison with the variants fertilised with NPK only. The difference between them comprises 1.8% and 9.0% in variants with the small and high dose, respectively. In the heavy soil, the trend was opposite. The application of sulphur into both soils resulted in the increase of the oil content in comparison with the NPK variants. Sulphur addition to NPK had a positive impact on the augmentation of the available sulphur content in the soil which can positively affect, particularly the following crops. Still, a drop in the pH value was not confirmed.

Opis:
Background. White mustard is a plant whose economic importance is gradually increasing. This is a result of the growing demand for its seed material due to a more common use of its green biomass in the developing systems of integrated and organic crops. The aim of the study was to estimate the effect of the sowing date of white mustard cultivar `Nakielska` on plant development, the length of growing period and the ability to achieve full seed maturity. Material and methods. The study presents the results of a three-year field experiment on white mustard (Sinapis alba L.). It was a one-factorial experiment in the randomized complete block design with four replications. The variable factor was the sowing date. White mustard was sown on 13 dates at seven-day intervals, from the beginning of April to the end of June or beginning of July depending on year, and harvested after reaching seed maturity. Results. For successive sowing dates, starting in April, the total average daily temperature at maturity systematically increased until it reached a maximum for the plants sown at the beginning of May. Maturation of white mustard sown from the end of May happened at successively lower temperatures, and the lowest total of average daily temperatures was recorded at sowing date 13. The average day length for the period from sowing to emergence of white mustard lengthened at sowing dates from the beginning of April to the beginning of June and for the next sowing dates (10–13) it shortened, reaching eventually 16.6 hours. With delayed sowing of the white mustard cultivar ‘Nakielska’, with a time-frame for growth for seeds, the plant growth period was significantly shortened and this had the effect of accelerating emergence and shortening rosette formation and budding. Conclusion. Vegetative development of white mustard grown for seeds sown from the beginning of April until mid-May proceeded at a systematically growing day length. Plants sown after mid-May until the first days of July came into the generative phase at ever shorter day length. The flowering of plants sown in mid-May proceeded at an average day length of 17 hours, whereas those sown at the beginning of July had an average day length of 14 hours.
W pracy przedstawiono trzyletnie wyniki badań polowych nad gorczycą białą. Były to doświadczenia jednoczynnikowe, w układzie losowanych bloków, w czterech powtórzeniach.
