Opis:: Variation is one of the salient features of the codified pronunciation norm of English. In General American pronunciation a word phonemic structure, among other word structures, is most subject to variation. The investigation of word phonemic structure variation in codified General American pronunciation has allowed it to establish the inventory of phonemes and the kinds of their variation that reflect the specifics of this process in this national variant of English.

Opis:: The paper presents the results of analysis of free phonemic variation in word phonemic structures in RP as its striking feature. Alternative pronunciation variants of words are created by vowels, consonants, and a combination of both when in free variation in a segmental composition of words. Free phonemic variation is conditioned by the position / phonetic environment of the alternating phoneme(s) in a word. The positional specification of free phonemic variation and the operation of a number of other factors substantiate the inner systemic character of free phoneme variation in the composition of English words in PR. EFL learners should be aware of existing alternative variants of words and their liability for change in the course of time.

Opis:: Problemy w realizacji struktury fonemowej wyrazu (skład i układ tworzących wyraz fonemów), rozpatrywane w odniesieniu do budowy sylabowej wyrazu, zostały zaprezentowane w niniejszym artykule na przykładzie zjawisk w wymowie czworga dzieci z umiarkowaną niepełnosprawnością intelektualną w wieku 8–11 lat (dwojga z mózgowym porażeniem dziecięcym i dwojga z zespołem Downa). U wszystkich dzieci rozpoznano oligofazję, u trojga z nich dysglosję współwystępującą z dysfagią, u dzieci z mpd. także dyzartrię. W wymowie badanych dzieci występowały zaburzenia paradygmatyczne (pod postacią deformacji i substytucji fonemów), którym towarzyszyły zaburzenia syntagmatyczne – zmiany w strukturze wyrazu polegające na odkształceniach ilościowych (przede wszystkim uszczuplenia struktury wyrazu w wyniku redukcji pojedynczych fonemów i grup fonemów; najczęstszym z zanotowanych zjawisk było upraszczanie grup spółgłoskowych) oraz na odkształceniach jakościowych (głównie w formie upodobnień fonemów); stosunkowo obszerną grupę stanowiły wyrazy, których struktura uległa znacznym przekształceniom w wyniku tzw. zmian kombinowanych.
Problems in the realization of the phonemic structure of the word (the composition and arrangements of phonemes) examined in relation to the syllabic structure of the word are presented in this article based on the example of the phenomena in the articulation of four children with moderate intellectual disability, aged 8–11 (two with cerebral palsy and two with Down syndrome). All children were diagnosed with oligophasia, three of them with dysglossia co-occurring with dysphagia, and the CP children – with dysarthria as well. In the articulation of the studied children there were paradigmatic disorders (in the form of distortion and substitution of phonemes) accompanied by syntagmatic disorders: changes in the word structure consisting in quantitative distortions (first of all reductions of the word structure resulting from the reduction of single phonemes and phoneme groups, the most frequent of the recorded phenomena being the simplification of consonant groups) and in qualitative distortions (mainly in the form of phoneme assimilation); a relatively large group consisted of words whose structure was considerably transformed as a result of the so-called combined changes.
