Opis:: The article considers whether the L2-learners use the analogical mechanisms for transforming the syntax as the native users of the language in question. In the questionnaire survey the stability of the preference to interpret the first nominal phrase observed in transforming L1 to be the subject of a sentence, and its influence on non-structural factors, such as animacy have been analysed. It has been shown that L2-learners, similar to the native users of the language in question, prefer the subject-object word order, and that the general preference should not be covered by the semantic information.

The article presents selected aspects of verb phrases in the subordinate clause in two related languages – German and Dutch. It discusses both the similarities and differences in the two languages with respect to word order in verb phrases.

Opis:: What appears to be a key question in recent studies on language evolution is the notion of natural word order-a hypothesis propounding word order to be innate in a phylogenetic and cognitive sense (Dryer, 2005; Pagel, 2009; Gell-Mann & Ruhlen, 2011). Gesture and sign studies provide a sound base for the topic. The primary idea for the study comes from Goldin-Meadow et al. (2008) research, which proposed the silent gesture paradigm, in which participants communicate simple events with the aid of their hands. The result of their research suggests that when participants communicate via gestures, notwithstanding their native language, they apply the SOV (subject-object-verb) word order-a finding which has been largely substantiated, but also discussed by following studies (e.g., Gibson et al., 2013; Hall et al., 2013). The purpose of our study was to verify whether the SOV order is prevalent in the experimental environment when participants are instructed to use whole-bodily pantomime rather than hand-and-arm gesture only. The actors in the study were instructed to perform reversible events from the pictures. Reversible events means that both the actor and the patient can perform an action. There exists an exciting opportunity for our study to shed a new light on research into natural word order.

Opis:: The aim of this paper is to point to word order as a property differentiating linguistic entities in the class of metacommentaries. This property was not recognised in earlier analyses of quasi-participial structures with adverbs. As a result of the analyses, two arrangements have been distinguished, i.e. [Adv] mówiąc ([Adv] speaking) and mówiąc [Adv] (speaking [Adv]), which – along with linear and prosodic features – differ in terms of the following properties: a) syntactic and semantic, i.e. the set and form of adverbs, acceptable adverbial transformations, coexistence with negation; b) functional, i.e. the resultant of a quasi-participial operation vs. metatextual unit of the system, possibility to elide an adverb.

Opis:: Serbo-Croat has a complex system of clitics which raise interesting problems for any theory of the interface between syntax and morphology. After summarising the data we review previous analyses (mostly within the generative tradition), all of which are unsatisfactory in various ways. We then explain how Word Grammar handles clitics: as words whose form is an affix rather than the usual ‘word-form’. Like other affixes, clitics need a word to accommodate them, but in the case of clitics this is a special kind of word called a ‘hostword’. We present a detailed analysis of Serbo-Croat clitics within this theory, introducing a new distinction between two cases: where the clitics are attached to the verb or auxiliary, and where they are attached to some dependent of the verb.

Opis:: The present study explores the acceptability of postverbal subjects by intermediate and advanced L2 English learners with L1 Macedonian, a pro-drop Slavic language with rich verbal morphology. The two languages differ regarding the distribution of subject-verb inversion (SVI): in Macedonian, it is a default pattern in thetic sentences, but English severely restricts SVI to specific contexts. To test the hypothesis that Macedonian learners encounter difficulties in acquisition of English SVI because of crosslinguistic influence, a grammaticality judgement and correction task was administered to two groups of Macedonian learners of English and a control group of English native speakers. The results revealed that L2 learners find English VS sentences and VS + it-insertion examples more acceptable than the native speakers, but the performance of the advanced group is closer to the native speakers than to the intermediate learners. Both non-native groups accept more readily inappropriate English sentences that conform to typical L1 structures.

Opis:: In our paper we discuss the development of analytical/periphrastic structures in Spanish such as the periphrastic passive voice, the periphrastic comparison of the adjectictive, and the periphrastic future tense. Moreover, we discuss the process of phonetic attrition within the noun paradigm and the development of the SVO word order from the SOV one. We take into consideration a stretch of time that starts in the pre-Proto-Indoeuropean period and ends in the period of Modern Spanish. One of our conclusions is that the development of analytical structures is part of a cyclical process.
