In this article, I will discuss the position of King, Keohane and Verba. Referring directly to the issues of sociology and political science, these authors set the main goal of their considerations to show how to design a research that brings accurate conclusions about social and political life. Many of their comments are applicable to research in other fields of science, including in psychology. Qualitative, and not only quantitative, methods can be very useful in researching the IT environment. Educational organizations can apply the conclusions from studies which connect the qualitative and quantitative methods to assist in the staff development to achieve organizational goals. Also -in process of proper recruitment of leaders in business management or to assist the stuff to raise the performing of professional tasks, even self-development of stuff members should also use the scientific research findings. Hence I consider both – quantitative but also qualitative methods – worth quoting and analyzing.

This paper is concerned with a numerical method for solving the problem Δu=f in Ωc (=intR2\Ω), (du/dn)|Γ=g, where ΩR2 is a polygon and Γ is the boundary of Ω. The method is based on coupling finite and boundary element techniques. To compensate for the loss of smoothness of the solution u near the corners of the polygon Ω we refine the triangulation without changing the number of triangles. We apply the affine triangular Lagrangean element of degree kN and the Lagrangean boundary element of degree k−1 to obtain the optimal order of convergence via the Galerkin projection.

The suspension is the component decisive about safety of drive of cars, in which dumping elements have essential meaning, which the most often are telescopic hydraulic shock-absorbers. Therefore, in exploitation process so important investigations of their technical condition are in track which opinion of their usefulness should be made not only to more far exploitation, but also the identification of typical damages. The common used method in practical ways of diagnosing of shock-absorber in article was introduced. There are two methods of investigations: built from and shock-absorber built-in in vehicle suspension. In first method - in support about indicatory graph, the characteristic of suppression be appointive. They are the basis to diagnostic opinion of technical condition of studied damper. In second method the results of investigations have approximate character. From those methods the most often used station control of vehicles in Poland - method post EUSAMA and BOGE in article were described, which used in investigations the harmonic excitatory of vibrations stimulant to vibrations unsprung and sprung masses of vehicle. The car is so folded, vibrate mechanical stimulated by excitator to vibrations arrangement. The vibro-acoustic methods of analyses' of signals in article were introduced, which can be practical in investigations of diagnostic shock-absorber. They are then the method of multidimensional analysis of signal - the Short-Time Fourier Transforms (the STFT), Wigner - Ville'a and Wavelet.

Opis:
Measurements and searches performed with the ATLAS detector at the CERN LHC often involve signatures with one or more prompt leptons. Such analyses are subject to `fake/non-prompt' lepton backgrounds, where either a hadron or a lepton from a hadron decay or an electron from a photon conversion satisfies the prompt-lepton selection criteria. These backgrounds often arise within a hadronic jet because of particle decays in the showering process, particle misidentification or particle interactions with the detector material. As it is challenging to model these processes with high accuracy in simulation, their estimation typically uses data-driven methods. Three methods for carrying out this estimation are described, along with their implementation in ATLAS and their performance.

The large effluxes generated by high-tech plasmas force plasmas to non-equilibrium conditions. This implies that plasma features are decoupled from each other and that therefore different methods have to be used quasi-simultaneously to characterize the plasma. Even more insight in plasmas and methods is obtained if polydiagnostics is applied to a series of plasma conditions that gradually differ in equilibrium departure. After discussing methods of passive and active spectroscopy, we apply polydiagnostics on an argon plasma operated in open air. By introducing H2 and reducing the power we approach conditions of cool atmospheric plasmas (CAPs). It is seen that especially the passive methods for the electron temperature determination are very sensitive to the degree of equilibrium departure suggesting that active spectroscopy is preferable. However, one should realize that lasers can easily heat cool plasmas. This is due to the fact that the ionization degree of (semi-) CAPs is small.

Analysis of Fermi gamma-ray burst duration distribution
Autorzy:
Tarnopolski, Mariusz
Opis:
Context. Two classes of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), short and long, have been determined without any doubts, and are usually prescribed to different physical scenarios. A third class, intermediate in T_{90} durations has been reported in the datasets of BATSE, Swift, RHESSI, and possibly BeppoSAX. The latest release of >1500 GRBs observed by Fermi gives an opportunity to further investigate the duration distribution. Aims. The aim of this paper is to investigate whether a third class is present in the log T_{90} distribution, or whether it is described by a bimodal distribution. Methods. A standard x^{2} fitting of a mixture of Gaussians was applied to 25 histograms with different binnings. Results. Different binnings give various values of the fitting parameters, as well as the shape of the fitted curve. Among five statistically significant fits, none is trimodal. Conclusions. Locations of the Gaussian components are in agreement with previous works. However, a trimodal distribution, understood in the sense of having three distinct peaks, is not found for any binning. It is concluded that the duration distribution in the Fermi data is well described by a mixture of three log-normal distributions, but it is intrinsically bimodal, hence no third class is present in the T_{90} data of Fermi. It is suggested that the log-normal fit may not be an adequate model.

Epidemics spread in heterogeneous populations

Opis:
Individuals building populations are subject to variability. This variability affects progress of epidemic outbreaks, because individuals tend to be more or less resistant. Individuals also differ with respect to their recovery rate. Here, properties of the SIR model in inhomogeneous populations are studied. It is shown that a small change in model’s parameters, e.g. recovery or infection rate, can substantially change properties of final states which is especially well-visible in distributions of the epidemic size. In addition to the epidemic size and radii distributions, the paper explores first passage time properties of epidemic outbreaks.

Introduction. A sedentary lifestyle with lack of physical activity contributes to deteriorated balance among healthy young people. Physical activity is import_ant since it stimulates neuromuscular junctions that control body posture, especially at younger age, when greater postural sway may be observed in stabilography compared to adults. Proper work of individual muscle groups is import_ant to maintain proper balance. Abnormal muscle tone can lead to dysbalances that make it difficult o maintain a stable posture in a variety of conditions. Aim. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of a training cycle consisting of stretching of the ilopsoas, rectus femoris, gluteus maximus, hamstring and rectus abdominis, and eccentric training of the above mentioned muscles to improve static and dynamic balance. Methods. Oobjective and qualitative-subjective were used to assess the results in a man aged 22 yrs. Postural control was tested twice in the patient with the Neurocom International Inc. SMART EquiTest device under static conditions without visual control and with dynamic visual surrounding and unstable support surface. Automatic postural reflexes were also evaluated. In addition, clinical tests were performed. Results. Myo-fascial training, which included eccentric training combined with lower limb and trunk stretching improved the postural control in the subject.

The crucial role in the studies on layer successions in lithostratigraphic sections with the application of stochastic model of depositional processes represented by the Markov chain is played by correct estimation of the matrix of transition numbers between lithofacies expected in a random sequence. Methods known from the literature are iteration procedures, which do not ensure quick, general solution. Hence, we propose a universal method based upon the Monte Carlo simulation technique. This method enables the researcher to estimate precisely and reliably the expected matrix of facies transitions.

Consider the following parabolic equation: (1) ∂u/∂t−∑2i=1(d/dxi)ai(x,t,u,D1u,D2u)+a0(x,t,u,D1u,D2u)=f(x,t), x=(x1,x2)∈Ω⊂R2, t∈[0,T], with the initial value condition u(x,0)=u0(x), x∈Ω, and with the boundary value condition u(x,t)=0, x∈∂Ω, t∈[0,T]. For the solution of equation (1) the author proposes a variational-difference method. Namely, he approximates equation (1) by Galerkin's method with respect to the variables x1,x2 and by the finite-difference method with respect to the variable t. Under some assumptions concerning the coefficients ai, i=0,1,2, an estimate of the error is given.

For some variants of the finite element method there exist points having a remainder value or a derivation remainder remarkably less than those given by global norms. This phenomenon is called superconvergence and the points are called superconvergence points. The generalized problem corresponding to (1) is as follows: Let Hk(Ω) be Sobolev space and Hk0(Ω) the completion of the space C∞0(Ω) with norm ∥⋅∥k,Ω. Find u∈H10(Ω) such that for each v∈H10(Ω), (2) a(u,v)=(f,v)0 holds, where a(u,v)=∫Ω(∑n|α|=0aα(x)DαuDαv)dx, (f,v)0=∫Ωf(x)v(x)dx, Dα=Dα11⋯Dαnn,1.5pt Dαiiu=∂αiu/∂xαii, i=1,n¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯. The approximate problem of the finite element variant considered is the following: Find uh∈Vh such that (3) for all v∈Vh, a(uh,v)=(f,v)0. The main result is the theorem: Let ai∈C(Ω¯), D1ai,D2ai∈L∞(Ω),i=1,2,∥σ∥∞L(Ω)≤σ,f∈L2(Ω). Suppose the eigenvalues of the operator L are different from zero, and u∈H4(Ω)∩H10(Ω). Then there exists h0 such that for h≤h0, h2∑P∈G|grad(u−uh)(P)|≤Ch3(|u|3+|u|4), where u and uh are the solutions of problems (2) and (3), respectively, and C is some constant independent of h. Further, |u|k={∫Ω(∑|α|=k(Dαu)2)dx}1/2, G=⋃N1N2i=1Fi(R), R={(±3√/3,±3√/3)} is a Gauss point set in the quadrant S={(ξ1,ξ2):|ξk|≤1,k=1,2}, and Fi(F(1)i,F(2)i):S→ei, ei an element; F(1)i(ξ1,ξ2)=x(i)0+h1ξ1/2, F(2)i(ξ1,ξ2)=y(i)0+h2ξ2/2, and (x(i)0,y(i)0) is the middle element.

Analysis of the observed and intrinsic durations of Swift/BAT gamma-ray bursts

Opis:
The duration distribution of 947 GRBs observed by Swift/BAT, as well as its subsample of 347 events with measured redshift, allowing to examine the durations in both the observer and rest frames, are examined. Using a maximum log-likelihood method, mixtures of two and three standard Gaussians are fitted to each sample, and the adequate model is chosen based on the value of the difference in the log-likelihoods, Akaike information criterion and Bayesian information criterion. It is found that a two-Gaussian is a better description than a three-Gaussian, and that the presumed intermediate-duration class is unlikely to be present in the Swift duration data.

On the limit between short and long GRBs
Autorzy:
Tarnopolski, Mariusz
Opis:
Two classes of GRBs have been identified thus far without doubt and are prescribed to different physical scenarios—NS-NS or NS-BH mergers, and collapse of massive stars, for short and long GRBs, respectively. The existence of two distinct populations was inferred through a bimodal distribution of the observed durations $T_{90}$, and the commonly applied 2 s limit between short and long GRBs was obtained by fitting a parabola between the two peaks in binned data from BATSE 1B. Herein, by means of a maximum likelihood (ML) method a mixture of two Gaussians is fitted to the datasets from BATSE, Swift, BeppoSAX, and Fermi in search for a local minimum that might serve as a new, more proper, limit for the two GRB classes. It is found that Swift and BeppoSAX distributions are unimodal, hence no local minimum is present, Fermi is consistent with the conventional limit, whereas BATSE gives the limit significantly longer (equal to 3.38 $\pm$ 0.27 s) than 2 s. These new values change the fractions of short and long GRBs in the samples examined, and imply that the observed $T_{90}$ durations are detector dependent, hence no universal limiting value may be applied to all satellites due to their different instrument specifications. Because of this, and due to the strong overlap of the two-Gaussian components, the straightforward association of short GRBs to mergers and long ones to collapsars is ambiguous.
